Mandela urges calm after two Ebola cases
November 18, 1996
Web posted at: 4:50 p.m. EST (2150 GMT) JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) President Nelson Mandela appealed for public calm Monday after a nurse was found to have contracted the mysterious Ebola virus, apparently from a Gabonese doctor.
The South African nurse and the doctor, who arrived in the country last month, were the only two people in the country known to be infected, according to health officials. The cases are the first in South Africa of Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus that is often fatal and has no known cure. "There is only one person affected by this disease ... and everyone that has been in contact with her has been contacted," said Parks Mankahlana, a spokesman for Mandela. The nurse was identified as Marilyn Lahana, 46, of the Morningside Clinic in suburban Johannesburg. She became ill about two weeks ago and was diagnosed Friday with Ebola. Health officials are monitoring some 200 people known to have come into contact with Lahana or the doctor, whose name was not disclosed. Family members, co-workers and others considered "close contacts" with the two are being watched for symptoms, which include fever, liver or kidney failure and bleeding, said

Last updated Wednesday 26.06.2002 9:04 PM Well that's it for Ebola, we are no more, the distances between us became too great an impediment (see Ebola Biography for the full band history). I was trying to form a new band with some of the Ebola folk but the restrictions my personal commitments placed in the way mean that this is no longer a possibility.
Some of the others may re-group in some form and rise again, but as I live in splendid geographical isolation in Newcastle it is highly unlikely I would be in position to participate.
I am reluctant to hang up my guitar after all of these years but realistically other than forming a one man band I don't really see what options I have got, as I know no one in the immediate geographical area with the same musical tastes and the ability to participate in a band.

Deadly ebola virus a fact of life in Gabon

In this story:
From Correspondent Gary Strieker NORTHEASTERN GABON (CNN) The Ivindo River in northeastern Gabon runs through the middle of a vast forest, thousands of square kilometers where no one lives and few venture. But recently this remote area has suffered the encroachments of gold miners, hunters and, most troubling of all, the deadly ebola virus. Jungle fever strikes in Gabon when gold mining and hunting open in a remote area (1.4MB/38 sec. QuickTime movie Two outbreaks of the virus last year killed 70 people here, and health officials responsible for tracking and containing such things returned recently to the village of Mayibout, site of the first outbreak. The epidemic began when children found a dead chimpanzee and took it home to eat. Chimpanzees and gorillas are considered a delicacy here, and the find was welcomed in the village. But the animal had died from ebola fever, and it infected everyone who touched it.

Ebola in Texas not harmful to humans, experts say
Two monkeys died from the virus
April 16, 1996
Web posted at: 2:00 p.m. EDT ALICE, Texas (CNN) Health officials sought to reassure the public Tuesday that the strain of Ebola virus found in two monkeys imported to Texas from the Philippines is not the same as last year's deadly African outbreak in Zaire. "This is not the Ebola-Zaire strain," Texas Health Commissioner David Smith told a news conference in Alice, the south Texas town where the privately owned Texas Primate Center is located. ( 160K AIFF sound or 160K WAV sound Although the Ebola diagnosed in Texas killed the monkeys, that particular strain "has not caused, in the past, any problems with humans," Smith said. "We cannot be 100 percent sure that humans can't be infected . . . but we never saw any (evidence) of this," added Pierre Rollin, one of several Ebola experts from the Centers for Disease Control sent to assist Texas health authorities.
Monkeys quarantined
The two dead monkeys were among 100 that "have been under quarantine since the day they arrived in Alice," said Associate Texas Health Commissioner Dr. Diane Simpson. She said only a few "well-trained" handlers have been in contact with the animals. ( 160K AIFF sound or 160K WAV sound While doctors have no reports of bites or scratches to monkey handlers, "I don't want to be the guinea pig that's going to be infected. I don't want to inject myself with that virus. That's why we take precautions," Rollin said.

EBOLA OUTBREAK UPDATE ATLANTA - Investigators at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hav confirmed that the Ebola virus is behind outbreak of hemorrhagic fever in Zaire. The outbreak has led to an army-enforced quarantine of Kikwit, a city of 600,000 people and the dispatch of biohazard experts from CDC and the WHO to the area. In a strongly worded message, the U.S. State department has strongly advised all others to stay well clear of the area. The outbreak evidently began about a month ago with the death of a surgery patient at a hospital in Kikwit, 375 miles east of Kinshasa, and has now claimed more than 100 lives. Additional reports suggest the outbreak has spread to a hospital in Masengo, a town 60 miles from Kikwit. The symptoms of Ebola virus include fever, rash and massive hemorrhaging from all body orifices. In previous outbreaks of Ebola virus, 88% of patients have died, most within a period of weeks. Poor hygiene at hospitals has been linked to the spread the virus in both the past and current outbreaks. CDC investigators now en route to Kikwit will be equipped with the now familiar protective'space suits' and respirators, based on the assumption that they will encounter a Biosafety Level 4 agent.

The death of Dr Matthew
In early October, ebola came to Uganda: the first major outbreak in any densely populated area. Scores died, but it might have been thousands if not for the work of Matthew Lukwiya, who ran the local hospital. James Astill reports from Gulu on the doctor who made the ultimate sacrifice
Tuesday January 2, 2001
The Guardian

During Dr Matthew Lukwiya's funeral, the pallbearers wore face-masks, latex gloves and surgical gowns, and the restricted number of mourners pressed back from the tightly sealed coffin. Lukwiya would have approved of these safety measures - it was he who devised them. In early October, Lukwiya suspected that a mysterious sickness killing student nurses at his hospital in Gulu, northern Uganda, was ebola. By the time a team of World Health Organisation (WHO) experts arrived, days later, there was little for them to do. Lukwiya had already got hold of their manual and begun isolating patients and setting up barrier nursing practices.

Ebola Virus Hemorrhagic Fever: General Information What are viral hemorrhagic fevers? Viral hemorrhagic fevers are a group of diseases caused by viruses from four distinct families of viruses: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods (such as ticks and mosquitoes). In some cases, such as Ebola virus, the natural host for the virus is unknown. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. Depending on the particular virus, the disease can progress until the patient becomes very ill with respiratory problems, severe bleeding, kidney problems, and shock. The severity of viral hemorrhagic fever can range from a relatively mild illness to death. What is Ebola virus?

(above) Ebola virus docks with cell membrane at middle left. Viral RNA (yellow) is released into the cytoplasm where it directs the production of new viral proteins and genetic material. New viral genomes are rapidly coated in protein to create cores. These viral cores stack up in the cell and migrate to the cell surface. Transmembrane proteins (purple) are produced which are ferried to the cell surface. Cores push their way through the cell membrane becoming enveloped in cell membrane and collecting their transmembrane proteins (spikes) as they do so. Examples of coiled virions are shown in the background.
