Ehrlichiosis
Ehrlichiosis describes several tick-borne bacterial infections originally known to only affect dogs and livestock in the United States, although human disease has been reported in the Far East since the 1950s. Since the mid-1980s, however, bacteria of the genus Ehrlichia have increasingly infected humans in the United States. In June 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began listing ehrlichiosis as a reportable disease ( see surveillance criteria ); 302 cases were reported in 1999. Ehrlichia bacteria live inside the cells of infected individuals and cause two major diseases in the U.S. human population. Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) occurs when the bacteria infect granulocytes, specific cells involved in immune responses and allergies. Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) occurs when a different Ehrlichia species infects macrophages, another type of immune cell. HGE and HME differ, but their symptoms overlap. Both often cause fever, headaches, and aches and pains, but a rash is not as common as with Rocky Mountain spotted fever or Lyme disease. HGE and HME can be treated with antibiotics if the infection is detected early. No vaccine is available.

ehrlichiosis E O
Pronunciation Key
ehrlichiosis , any of several diseases caused by rickettsia of the genus Ehrlichia. Ehrlichiosis is transmitted by ticks. Both human forms tend to develop about nine days after a tick bite. Symptoms include severe headache and chills and low white blood cell and platelet counts. The lack of a rash distinguishes them from Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease ; lack of upper respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms distinguishes them from influenza . Many cases are mild, and all are treatable with antibiotics (tetracycline and doxycycline); however, ehrlichiosis can be fatal in some cases when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. It was known for years that certain species (some believe them to be variant strains of a single species) can cause disease in animals, for example E. canis in dogs and E. phagocytophila in sheep and cattle. In the mid-1980s human ehrlichiosis was first recognized. The causative agent was found to be E. chaffeensis. This form is now known as human monocytic ehrlichiosis. In 1990 another form of the disease, human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, was identified. The Ehrlichia organisms invade various white blood cells (see blood immunity E. chaffeensis

SEROLOGICAL STUDY OF CANINE EHRLICHIOSIS IN WESTERN AND EASTERN AZARBAIJANS OF IRAN Asri S, and Mahmoudian A Objective: Canine Ehrlichiosis is a tropical tick-borne disease caused by Ehrlichia canis . It produces a subclinical infection and causes fever and some hematological abnormalities. Design: Blood samples from 1800 domestic and wild dogs were obtained and serological tests were used to detect Ehrlichia spp Materials and Methods: Blood samples from 980 dogs (510 domestic dogs and 475 wild dogs) in West Azarbaijan and 820 dogs (520 domestic dogs and 300 wild dogs) in East Azarbaijan were obtained. Hematological and biochemical tests and also indirect immunofluorescence assay (Ristic et al, 1986) were used for diagnosis of disease and the variants of the organism. Results: The results shows that 67% of wild dogs and 38% of domestic dogs in West Azarbaijan were serologically positive for Ehrlichia. These values for east Azarbaijan were 58% and 39% respectively. Conclusion: Ehrlichiosis in Iran and especially in Azarbaijan is one of the most prevalent tick borne diseases. Despite of current imagination, according to results of our study, canine Ehrlichiosis especially in wild dogs in Iran has a high prevalence and can cause an acute to chronic hemolytic anemia. and it is necessary to pay more attention to this fact by field's veterinarians. The main variants diagnosed were E.canis

Breed: Border collie
Age: 9 Yrs.
Problem: Tick disease - Ehrlichiosis - Hair Loss - Calcification of the spine and joints. April 1, 2001
My name is Carla Murray and Mark is my champion sheep-herding Border collie that was given too much Prednisone over a lengthy time. His back and most of his joints calcified. He lost his hair, and remains extremely anemic. More than one vet that saw him told me that by all rights he should be dead. He never gave up, so, I haven't either. Mark's illness began a week after Mark had won the Ranch division in a sheepdog trial at the end of May 2000. He was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis, a tick disease that is usually accompanied by bleeding through the nose and sometimes eyes. He never showed any symptoms other than being extremely anemic. Two other of my dogs tested positive also. They were all given doxycycline for 6 weeks. All the other dogs healed and tested negative, but Mark had a relapse and was put on Prednisone along with the doxycycline. It continued and I became extremely worried about his condition.

Clinical Name:
Ehrlichiosis, Ehrlichia
Overview
Dogs get ehrlichiosis from the brown dog tick, which passes an Ehrlichia Ehrlichia organism, the third and most serious stage of infection, the chronic phase, will commence. Lameness, neurological and ophthalmic disorders, kidney disease, and anemia and other blood disorders can result. Chronic ehrlichiosis can be fatal. Antibiotics, administered for an extended period of time, are effective at eliminating the infection. Dogs with severe cases of chronic ehrlichiosis cannot be cured, but supportive care and treatment of diseases secondary to the infection, such as anemia, can help stabilize the dog.
Clinical Signs and Symptoms
The acute stage of the disease, occurring most often in the spring and summer, begins one to three weeks after infection and lasts for two to four weeks. Clinical signs include a fever, petechiae, bleeding disorders, and vasculitis. There are no outward signs of the subclinical phase, which can last for up to five years. Clinical signs of the chronic phase include pale gums due to anemia, thrombocytopenia, vasculitis, lymphadenopathy, respiratory dyspnea, coughing, polyuria, polydipsia, lameness, ophthalmic diseases such as retinal hemorrhage and anterior uveitis, and neurological disease.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is achieved most commonly by serologic testing of the blood for the presence of antibodies against the Ehrlichia organism. During the acute phase of infection, however, the test can be falsely negative because the body will not have had time to make antibodies to the infection. Thus, the test will need to be repeated if the first result is negative. In addition, blood tests will show abnormalities in the numbers of red cells, white cells, and platelets. Uncommonly, a diagnosis can be made by looking under a microscope at a blood smear for the presence of the

Ehrlichiosis by Holly Frisby, DVM
Veterinary Services Department Canine ehrlichiosis is a disease of dogs and wild canids (e.g., wolves) and is found worldwide. Canine ehrlichiosis is also known by other names such as "tracker dog disease", "tropical canine pancytopenia", "canine hemorrhagic fever", and "canine typhus". It affected a large number of military dogs in the war in Vietnam. What causes ehrlichiosis? Ehrlichiosis can be caused by several organisms including Ehrlichia canis E. equi E. platys E. ewingii , and possibly others. The Ehrlichia organisms are what we call rickettsia which on the evolutionary scale are between bacteria and viruses. How is Ehrlichia transmitted? Ehrlichia is transmitted by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus . The immature form of the tick feeds on an animal infected with Ehrlichia . When these immature forms or a mature form of the tick feeds on another animal, the Ehrlichia is passed on to that animal. The Ehrlichia can remain alive in the developing tick for up to 5 months. This means a tick could become infected in the fall, and infect a dog the following spring.

Human Ehrlichiosis There are two distinct forms of illness recognized: human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis , and human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE), caused by an agent similar or identical to the veterinary pathogens E. equi and E. phagocytophila. Ehrlichiae are bacteria that primarily invade leukocytes (white blood cells). The bacteria is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, which acquire the agents after feeding on infected animal reservoirs. Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum ticks are capable of transmitting this disease in Michigan. Symptoms:
Ehrlichiae dividing
in white blood cell Fever Headache Malaise and muscle aches. Other signs may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, joint pain, confusion, and occasionally, a rash. HGE has not yet been found in Michigan but it has been diagnosed in patients in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Also, HME is occasionally reported in Indiana. Because the vector Ixodes scapularis is found in Michigan and the state’s close proximity to the state of Wisconsin, the emergence of this disease is being closely monitored in Michigan.

What is ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is an acute disease of humans and animals caused by bacteria named Ehrlichia . These organisms, which are transmitted by ticks, can infect two different types of white blood cells. Where does ehrlichiosis occur? One type of ehrlichiosis, caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia chaffeensis , occurs primarily in the south central and southeastern United States. This particular organism, which infects the white blood cells called monocytes, has been known to exist for several years and has caused hundreds of cases of human illness. A new type of Ehrlichia is now known to occur in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and certain northeastern states. This recently discovered Ehrlichia has not yet been named, but because it infects the white blood cells known as granulocytes, the illness it causes is referred to as human granulocytic ehrlichiosis. EPIDEMIOLOGY The disease is transmitted by the bite of a tick, but the species of the tick is unknown. The reservoir is the domestic dog and perhaps the coyote and wolf. PATHOLOGY There is a 12-day incubation period during which time it can be found in the blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow. However, the primary target tissue is the leukocyte. The organism is an obligate intracellular parasite which multiples within the cytoplasm of the host cell. Like the Rickettsia , and in contrast to Coxiella , it does not form a vacuole within the cytoplasm. There are characteristic intracytoplasmic inclusions within the leukocyte that are used for diagnosis. There is a leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. In a few people there is a maculopapular or petechial rash, but this is rare.

Title: Researchers Identify New Type Of Potentially Fatal Tick-Borne Disease
Doctor's Guide
July 15, 1999
ST. LOUIS, MO July 15, 1999 Researchers have discovered a new form of a tick-borne disease that can be fatal in humans. This finding provides more insight into ehrlichiosis, first identified in humans in the United States in 1986. A bacterium called Ehrlichia ewingii causes ehrlichiosis in dogs, cattle and other animals. But in the past few years, four people exposed to ticks in Missouri have contracted the disease from this bacterium. "We want people to know that ehrlichiosis is in Missouri, Arkansas and southern Illinois," said Gregory Storch, M.D., professor of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "If someone is bitten by a tick and feels sick afterward, he or she should contact a physician as soon as possible and make sure the physician knows about the exposure." The researchers report their findings in today's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. The lead authors are Storch and Richard Buller, Ph.D., research instructor of pediatrics. The symptoms of ehrlichiosis resemble the flu and they include fever, malaise, headache and muscle and joint pain. They usually appear seven to 10 days after a tick bite. Dog ticks, deer ticks and the Lone Star tick are known to spread the disease.
