The Female Reproductive System
Endometrial tissue, whether it is inside or outside the uterus, responds to the rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone produced by the ovaries during the reproductive cycle. The roles hormones play in the function of the reproductive organs will help you understand endometriosis, its diagnosis, and treatment.
The Reproductive Organs
The uterus is a hollow organ in the center of the pelvis similar in size and shape to a pear, but usually smaller. The cervix, or lower part of the uterus, protrudes into the upper vagina. The two fallopian tubes are attached to the upper part of the uterus, one on each side. Each tube forms a narrow passageway that opens into the pelvic portion of the abdominal cavity, near the ovaries. The ovaries are the two small glands which are similar in size to a prune and attached on each side of the uterus, beneath the fimbriated or fringed opening of the fallopian tubes. The ovary serves two functions: it produces oocytes (eggs) and secretes hormones. Each month at the time of ovulation, a mature egg is released by an ovary. Tiny, hair-like cilia on the inner lining of the fallopian tubes catch the egg and draw it inside. The egg may be fertilized during the journey through the tube toward the uterus, known as the endometrium.

Birmingham, Alabama
Birmingham, Alabama is one of those cities that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Originally called Elyton, Birmingham grew from an insignificant farm community to an industrial giant in the late 1800s. At the beginning of the 20th century Birmingham's mills continued to produce the iron and steel needed to defend freedom and build a new world. Although its reputation suffered during the turbulence of the 1960s and 70s, the influence of the University of Alabama at Birmingham has given the city a renewed sense of 'becoming' as it enters the 21st century.
Birmingham has developed a vibrant manufacturing and service oriented economy without sacrificing its unique southern charm. It's small wonder that Mercedes Benz chose the Birmingham metro area as the location to build its popular M-series cars. Recent publications have also noted that Birmingham is among the top communities for growing a business. Both employment and reasonably priced housing are plentiful to residents and those relocating to Alabama.
Whether it is history, the arts, outdoor activities, shopping, nightlife or even the thrill of the Talladega Raceway, you can find it in Birmingham.

Hysterectomy:
No longer necessary
"A hysterectomy for benign fibroid tumors or ovarian cysts is an archaic procedure from traditional medicine and lacks a sensitivity to the needs of the female patient. It is likened to castration, in that it unnecessarily removes the female reproductive organs."
Dr. del Junco Jr.
General/Vascular Surgeon
Temple Community Hospital Fact: 650,000 hysterectomies are performed as common medical procedures in the United States each year. Fact: 80-85% of those hysterectomies are unnecessary. For benign fibroids and cysts we advocate removing only the diseased portion and saving the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes regardless of the amount of tumors, size of tumors or the age of the patient. http://198.66.36.245/html/information.html
S E C T I O N S WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS? Endometriosis is a condition where endometrium (the lining of the uterus) is found in locations outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue may be found on the ovaries, uterus, bowel, bladder utero-sacral ligaments (ligaments that hold the uterus in place), or peritoneum (covering lining of the pelvis and abdominal cavity). On rare occasions it can be found in other distant sites. COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ENDOMETRIOSIS Am I too young to have Endometriosis? Endo can cause problems any time between your first period and your last period (at 45-55 years old). What happens if I don't get it treated? It is impossible to tell you exactly what will happen. However, in general, if the disease is not treated the problems tend to get worse. Can Endometriosis be cured? If diagnosed early it can usually be treated effectively, but it may occur again. Does this mean I can't have children? Some women may have difficulty getting pregnant, but many don't. The best thing is to have the endo treated as eariy as possible.

97. Video
with the help of some caring doctors and womens' support groups they made a documentaryfilm that shows women what they can expect when they get endometriosis.
http://198.66.36.245/html/video.html
S E C T I O N S Two women, one a nurse in Australia, the other a film maker in the US in Texas had identical experiences with endo. Misdiagnosis, unbelievable pain dismissed as hypochondria, imagination, or "This is normal - put up with it".
They each determined to share their experiences with other endo sufferers.
They met in an internet chat room. They planned, they raised money and from their own experiences with the disease and with the help of some caring doctors and womens' support groups they made a documentary film that shows women what they can expect when they get endometriosis.
How well did they succeed? Here's a review from Mary Lou Ballweg, who started the US Endometriosis Association 18 years ago when she couldn't get help with her disease
"This video is so good that it simply must get out to the world.
From the beginning of the Endometriosis Association, women and girls have shared their stories of endo - powerful, painful, poignant stories.
Anyone who listens to these stories will be moved and forever change their attitudes towards this disease. Now, in a wonderful documentary, the best video ever on endo, women tell their stories for the world. If we can get partners, friends, families, and most of all, doctors and researchers, to view this documentary we can help change the world's view of endometriosis."

What is endometriosis? endometriosis is a common and chronic endometriosisassociation Inlet Medical, Inc. would like to thank the endometriosis
http://www.dyspareunia.org/html/endometriosis.htm
Send this link
to a friend Search this site What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a common and chronic gynecological and immunological disease that can result in pelvic pain. About 2-4% of women and girls of reproductive age and up to 30% of women with infertility have endometriosis. That amounts to approximately 5.5 million women in the United States and Canada. NOT only women of reproductive age. Girls as young as 9 and women up to 78 years old have been surgically diagnosed with endo. The disease occurs when endometrial cells develop outside of their normal location inside the uterus. The misplaced endometrial cells respond to the menstrual cycle in the same way as those lining the uterus. The tissue grows and sheds blood at the time of menses. However, instead of flowing out of body through the vagina, the blood shed by the misplaced cells has no way of leaving the body. The resulting internal bleeding can lead to chronic inflammation and the formation of adhesions and scar tissue. Location of Endometriosis Areas commonly affected by endometriosis include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the ligaments that support the uterus, the area between the vagina and rectum, the outer surface of the uterus and the lining of the pelvic cavity. Endometrial lesions can also be found in the bladder, bowel, vagina, cervix and vulva. More rarely the lung and other body tissues can be affected.
