Bandeirantes 3900, 14049-900 Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brasil Unité de Pharmacologie Cellulaire, Unité Associée Institut Pasteur/INSERM, Paris, France In this review we discuss our recently results showing interleukin 5 (IL-5) involvement in eosinophil migration and in the maintenance of eosinophilia in blood, bone marrow, lung and peritoneal cavity, in a visceral larva migrans syndrome model using guinea-pigs infected with Toxocara canis . We also describe the sequential release of TNF-a and IL-8 during the course of infection, and the interaction between these cytokines and IL-5 during infection. Finally we propose a new biological role for IL-5, at least in our model, as a modulator of IL-8 release and secretion. Box 11, Woden ACT 2606, Australia Parts of this work have been presented at the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association and published in abstract form in Gastroenterology Abstract Tissue eosinophilia is a feature of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease and other forms of colonic inflammation but it is not clear whether the role of eosinophils in the disease process is to contribute to tissue damage. Interleukin 5 (IL-5) stimulates production and activation of eosinophils in vitro and enhances immunoglobulin A (IgA) production. As very little is known about the function of IL-5 in the colon, the aim of this study was to assess its role in colonic inflammation. IL-5 deficient mice were studied using the dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model and the results compared to a congenic IL-5+/+ strain. The absence of IL-5 resulted in reduction of tissue eosinophilia (P

Patients with eosinophilia have an abnormally high number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in their blood. Eosinophilia is not a type of cancer but it often occurs in reaction to something else in the body. High levels of eosinophils indicate that the body may be reacting to an allergen or parasite, or to substances produced by the cells of cancers such as Hodgkin's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia. Thus, eosinophilia is most commonly a reaction to a disease process rather than a specific disease itself. Eosinophilic leukemia is a rare cause of eosinophilia; it is treated similarly to other forms of acute leukemia. Treatments are generally aimed at the underlying allergic, parasitic, or malignant disorder.
