EYE CARE - Farsightedness/Hyperopia People with farsightedness, or hyperopia, see distant objects clearly, but close-up objects appear blurry. This is a result of the eye being too short; causing images to focus at a point beyond the retina. Symptoms: People with farsightedness tend to hold reading materials at a distance, and sit far away from the television. In children, the eyes will attempt to compensate for mild farsightedness – this “focusing” process is called accommodation . As we age, the eye loses its ability to accommodate. Presbyopia is similar to farsightedness in that objects very near tend to blur. Specifically, presbyopia causes blurred vision at normal reading distance. It is caused by a hardening of the lens, and is a normal aging process. Presbyopia affects people with normal vision, nearsightedness , farsightedness or astigmatism , and begins to affect most people in their 40’s.

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused by the eyeball being too small or the focusing power being too weak. Farsightedness is often present from birth, but children can often tolerate moderate amounts without difficulty and most outgrow the condition. As aging occurs, glasses or contact lenses may be required to correct the vision. A family history of farsightedness is a risk factor.

LASIK
is an acronym for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK surgery is essentially a combination procedure using an instrument known as a microkeratome and the laser surgery (PRK) to correct focussing problems in the Human Eye.
The ability to see clearly is taken for granted by millions of people and for millions of others, seeing clearly has been possible only through the use of glasses or contact lenses. Advances in laser eye surgery have given countless individuals worldwide the choice to be free from the constraints of corrective glasses and eyewear. Established in August 1994, the Victoria Corneal Laser Centre has helped thousands of people see clearly without glasses or contact lenses. The Victoria Corneal Laser Centre has the experience you can count on to make everything from that first initial contact through the laser eye surgery and follow up visits a positive one.
In LASIK a flap is created in the cornea using a special micro surgical blade (microkeratome). The excimer laser is then used to remove a microscopic layer of tissue from the deeper layer of the cornea to correct the refractive problem. After the excimer laser reshapes the cornea the flap of tissue created by the microkeratome is then repositioned on the top surface of the eye and adheres strongly after a few minutes without sutures. This is in contrast to surface PRK where the tissue removed is from the surface of the cornea. LASIK is the most common type of laser vision correction today.

F A R S I G H T E D N E S S What is a Farsightedness ? Farsightedness, technically called hyperopia, is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close objects are not brought into proper focus. Why does farsightedness occur ? If the length of the eyeball is too short, the crystalline lens of the eye cannot bring near objects into a sharp and clearly focused image. Some theorists believe that farsightedness is hereditary while others believe that it may result from environmental factors. How common is Farsightedness ? Many individuals have some degree of farsightedness. This condition is only a problem if it significantly affects a person's ability to see. It is estimated that over half of all people who wear glasses are waring them because of a focusing problem due to farsightedness or presbyopia What are some signs of farsightedness ? Common symptoms of farsightedness include difficulty in concentrating and maintaining a clear focus on near objects; eye strain; general tension; fatigue and / or headaches after close work; aching or burning eyes; poor reading ability' holding material away from the eyes; and irritability or nervousness after sustained concentration. How is farsightedness detected ?

    Lesson 6: The Eye
    Farsightedness and its Correction
The human eye's ability to accommodate allows it to view focused images of both nearby and distant objects. As mentioned earlier in Lesson 6 , the lens of the eye assumes a large curvature (short focal length) to bring nearby objects into focus and a flatter shape (long focal length) to bring a distant object into focus. Unfortunately, the eye's inability to a provide a wide variance in focal length leads to a variety of vision defects. Most often, the defect occurs at one end of the spectrum - either the inability to assume a short focal length and focus on nearby objects or the inability to assume a long focal length and thus focus on distant objects. Farsightedness or hyperopia The cure for the farsighted eye centers around assisting the lens in refracting the light. Since the lens can no longer assume the convex and highly curved shape which is required to view nearby objects, it needs some help. Thus, the farsighted eye is assisted by the use of a converging lens. This converging lens will refract light before it enters the eye and subsequently decreases the image distance. By improving the refracting ability of the eye, the image of nearby objects is once again focused upon the retinal surface.

Farsightedness (Hyperopia) Hyperopia, unlike normal vision , occurs when the cornea is too flat in relation to the length of the eye. This causes light to focus at a point beyond the retina, resulting in blurry close vision and occasionally blurry distance vision as well. Usually this condition is undetected until later in life because the young eye is able to compensate for the hyperopia by contracting the internal lens of the eye.

    • Heredity
    Diagnosing hyperopia:
Many people are not diagnosed with hyperopia without a complete eye exam. School screenings typically do not detect this condition because they test only for distance vision. Your eye doctor can conduct a refractive evaluation to determine whether your eyes focus light rays exactly on the retina at distance and near. A visual acuity test will determine your ability to see sharply and clearly at all distances. Your eye doctor will also check your eye coordination and muscle control, as well as your eyes' ability to change focus. All of these are important factors in how your eyes see.
    Treatment of hyperopia:
Glasses and contact lenses are used by many for the temporary treatment of hyperopia. However, there are a number of

Farsightedness, or hyperopia , as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close ones do not come into proper focus. Farsightedness occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, so light entering your eye is not focused correctly. Common signs of farsightedness include difficulty in concentrating and maintaining a clear focus on near objects, eye strain, fatigue and/or headaches after close work, aching or burning eyes, irritability or nervousness after sustained concentration. Common vision screenings, often done in schools, are generally ineffective in detecting farsightedness. A comprehensive optometric examination will include testing for farsightedness. In mild cases of farsightedness, your eyes may be able to compensate without corrective lenses. In other cases, your optometrist can prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses to optically correct farsightedness by altering the way the light enters your eyes.

    Myopia
Myopia is the medical term for "nearsightedness". 25% of the world today is myopic. More than 70 million people in North America are nearsighted. Myopia occurs when an eye is too long for the cornea's curvature. Light rays entering the eye do not come to a sharp focus on the retina at the back of the eye. Instead, they focus further forward, producing a blurred image. This is demonstrated in the diagram to the left. The term 'nearsighted' means that you can see 'near' objects clearly without your glasses, but objects further in the distance are blurry. There are varying degrees of myopia or nearsightedness. The more myopic you are, the more blurred objects appear in the distance, the higher your eyeglass prescription and the thicker your glasses. Back Of all myopic people, about 90% have corrections less than -6.00 diopters.

    Farsightedness or hyperopia
If you are farsighted, you are able to see objects at a far distance clearly whereas objects at a close distance appear blurry. Compared to the eye with normal vision, your eye has grown too short. The refractive point of incoming light rays is not located on the retina itself but behind it.
The optical correction is made by increasing the refractive power of your eye, in other words by moving the refractive point forward.
For eyeglasses and contact lenses , the correction is made with a convex lens, and the corrective value is indicated in "plus" diopter. Your prescription will read for example +3.5 diopter. If surgery is performed, the refractive power of the cornea or of the lens is altered in such a way that it reaches optimal conditions.
The farsighted eye differs from the nearsighted eye insofar as up to a certain age, farsightedness can be accommodated by the lens of the eye. The lens of the eye is able to change shape (accommodation) and thereby increases its refractive power, which compensates for the decreased refractive power of the farsighted eye for distance vision.
Farsighted individuals usually are able to see images at a distance well even at advanced ages. Eyeglasses for younger people are needed only in severe cases of farsightedness. On the other hand, the inability to read, or "

farsightedness (hyperopia), condition in which far objects can be seen easily but there is difficulty in near vision. It is caused by a defect of refraction in which the image is focused behind the retina of the eye rather than upon it, either because the eyeball is too short or because the refractive power of the lens is too weak. Presbyopia, a similarly faulty vision, is attributable to physiological changes in the lens brought on by age. Corrective eyeglasses with convex lenses compensate for the refractive errors.

    Quick Reference
Reviewed by Dr. Clement J. Cheng Farsightedness is an eye condition also known as hyperopia. For people with farsightedness, the lens of the eye focuses images slightly behind the retina, making nearby objects blurry. In many cases, children overcome mild farsightedness through a natural process called accommodation: as the eye grows, the eye muscles contract, bringing the focal point forward onto the retina. With age, the eye's natural ability to accommodate lessens.
    Detailed Information
    Symptoms of farsightedness include:
    • blurred vision of close objects
    • eye strain
    • headache
    • aching eyes
An ophthamologist diagnoses farsightedness using several tests. One test is the visual acuity test, where the patient reads letters off a chart while standing 20 feet back. Other diagnostic tests include a refraction test and a test of the eye muscle’s integrity.
