Definition A nonspecific diagnosis for a condition in which there are palpable lumps in the breasts, usually associated with pain and tenderness, that fluctuate with the menstrual cycle and that becomes progressively worse until menopause . At least 50% of women of reproductive age have palpably irregular breasts.
Causes The Medical College of Pennsylvania found that iodine deficiency is a common cause of fibrocystic disease. Other factors include hormone imbalance and abnormal breast milk production, caused by high amounts of the hormone estrogen. In fibrocystic disease round lumps that move freely and are either firm or soft are produced.
Symptoms Tenderness and lumpiness of the breasts with pain, usually most severe before menstruation. The cysts may change in size. In this disease, the cysts fill with fluid and fibrous tissue surrounds the cysts and thickens like a scar. The pressure causes pain. Fluid is reabsorbed by the breast tissue when a hormone imbalance or abnormal milk production occurs. The milk-producing glands multiply and carry milk into the supporting fibrous tissue, resulting in fibrocystic disease of the breast. As a woman ages, it becomes more difficult for the lymph system to absorb this fluid completely. Fluid is trapped and results in cysts and inflammation of the breast. These cysts are benign (not cancer).

Fibrocystic Breasts Normal adult female breasts are made up of different parts. The chest wall muscles lay underneath the breast, from the breastbone to the armpit and up to the collarbone. The mammary glands are clusters of glands that empty their secretions/milk into a system of ducts that end at the nipple. Fibrous tissues surround the other breast tissues and give the breast firmness and support. Fatty tissue lies between the fibrous and glandular areas. It makes the breast feel more or less soft, depending on the amount of fat. The lymph nodes are chains of small glands that help defend the breast against disease. The amounts of these types of tissues vary depending on a woman's age, weight, and hormonal stage in life. The breasts will change normally during puberty, menopause, pregnancy, weight gain or loss, and at different times of the menstrual cycle. What Are Fibrocystic Breasts? An estimated 30-50% of women have what has been called "fibrocystic breast disease." Since this condition is so common, it is not even considered a "disease" anymore. Most women affected are between the ages of 20-50, before menopause starts. These changes are not a type of cancer and do not necessarily lead to breast cancer.

46. How To Keep Your Breasts Healthy
These are called fibrocystic breasts. fibrocystic breasts often run in families;ask your mother, sister, aunt or grandmother if she had lumpy breasts.
http://www.aradia.org/Breast cancer.htm
How to Keep Your Breasts Healthy In recent years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, over 40,000 U.S. women died of breast cancer. More than 150,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year. What does this mean for YOU? First of all, breast health is a topic every woman can and should understand. Your breasts are easy to observe, feel, and evaluate. Every month, about a week after your period ends (when your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen), do a breast self-examination. The more familiar you are with your breasts, the more likely you are to notice any changes. While standing in front of a mirror, look at your breasts with your arms hanging straight down. Then raise your arms over your head and look again. Finally, bend your elbows, put your hands on your hips and flex your chest muscles to press your hands into your hips. Look for asymmetry (one breast pointing off to the side or in a different direction), puckers or dimples, scaly skin patches, or nipple discharge (clear or bloody). Next, lie on your back and feel your breasts, using the pads of your fingers rather than the tips. You can move your hand in a spiral around the breast, moving from the outside in toward the nipple, or you can imagine the breast in pie-shaped wedges, feeling each one from the outside to the center. Make sure you also check your underarms, the area between breast and underarm, and the upper chest up to your collarbone. You are looking for any lumps or thick masses that have a hard sensation or feeling similar to a marble. If you find a lump, check the opposite breast to see if there is a matching lump on it; breast cancer is rarely symmetrical. Note whether the lump is sore; breast cancer is typically painless. Also, make a note of the lump’s location and approximate size, and check it again in a week or two to see if there have been any changes during your menstrual cycle.

Excerpts from a talk by John R. Lee, M.D.
When Dr. Lee began studying natural progesterone, he was recommending natural progesterone to treat osteoporosis.
He was astounded when a growing number of these women came back to him reporting that while the progesterone reversed their osteoporosis, the fibrocystic breast disease they had had for years had also disappeared.
One woman who had had four surgeries and kept developing lumps was worried that it might be breast cancer. After using progesterone for about three months, her breasts returned to normal. That progesterone could reverse fibrocystic breast disease
Another woman talking to Dr. Lee about her osteoporosis asked him what if anything natural progesterone had on fibrocystic breasts.

Fibrocystic Breast Disease Fibrocystic breast disease is a common benign condition characterized by lumps filled with fluid that change the tissues of the breast during the menstrual cycle. The term "disease" in this case is misleading and the term “change” would be more appropriate because this condition is so commonly found in normal breasts. Fibrocystic changes are the most common cause of breast lumps in women ages 30 to 50. Other terms for this condition include "mammary dysplasia," "benign breast disease," and "diffuse cystic mastopathy". Women with fibrocystic breasts may encounter a difficult time with mammography. Not only can breasts be too sensitive for the necessary compression, but the lumps make the mammogram very difficult to interpret. Lumps can hide early cancerous legions or the lumps themselves can be mistakenly diagnosed as cancer. Either way, mammograms are less accurate in women with fibrocystic lumps.

I have had a previous cyst removed from my left breast. Currently, I have about 20 cysts that have developed in the same breast (according to the doctor). I have stopped taking my birth control for about five months. Can this cause all of these cysts to develop? Is this very common to have this many? so far, none of them have gone away and I have had then for about four months. My doctor has told me to keep track of any enlargements but does not seem all that concerned about them. Is there some sort of hormonal imbalence that can cause this many to develop? What causes this many to appear? Thanks

I have a few questions. First off what is fibrocystic- is that that texture of the breast? My doc said something about that. Also I have a small 1-2 cm cyst on my breast- detached from the breast wall, movable- some times it is soft, other times it is hard. What are these caused by- the cysts and fibrocystic quality? Can it be related to removal of an ovary? I am 29, no pregnancies, and have one cousin with breast cancer.

Why call it a disease when it's not? "Breast disease" is a phrase that makes most women apprehensive. After examining a women's breasts or reading a mammogram, a doctor may announce that the patient has "fibrocystic disease" or "benign breast disease." If it's benign, why call it a disease?

Disease is a terrible word to use for something that is relatively harmless. Sometimes a doctor uses it to describe chronically lumpy breasts that may be painful and tender before menstruation. More often, "fibrocystic disease' simply refers to the natural overall lumpiness that can occur in breast tissue as a women ages. This kind of thing is all too common among conventional medicine: make the problem seem daunting enough to be accepted as incurable. These changes are natural and are no more a disease than gray hair or age lines.
