Fibrocystic breast condition is a disorder of the female breast characterized by non-malignant lumps, the majority of these are not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Females from puberty to old age can be effected. This condition affects about 50-80% of women to some degree. It usually disappears after menopause. Symptoms are tender breasts containing lumps and benign cysts that may be mildly uncomfortable to severely painful.

PMS - Successful Treatments
You look better when you feel better.
Traditional Treatments
Traditional treatments have included tranquilizers, diruetics, dietary changes, thyroid supplements, herbs, vitamins, exercise and accupuncture. While these may provide some easing of symptoms , the underlying causes remain.
Successful Treatments
Dr. Joel T. Hargrove of Vanderbilt University Medical Center has seen a 90% success rate in treating PMS with oral doses of natural progesterone.* An even higher rate of success has been reported by Dr. John R. Lee, M. D., using Transdermal Natural Progesterone in his practice for more than 15 years.** The difference between the methods of application is that oral progesterone requires 5-8 times the daily dose to obtain the same results of Transdermal Progesterone . Approximately 80% of oral progesterone is intercepted by the liver and conjugated by glucuronic acid for excretion in the bile. Additionally, oral progesterone will produce a sharp rise in serum progesterone levels followed by a rapid drop in serum levels within several hours. In thirty years of clinical practice, seventeen of them recommending transdermal natural progesterone, Dr. Lee has observed consistent benefits and safety of natural progesterone therapy. He makes this statement:

"From my women patients, I learned that fibrocystic breasts were most often merely a sign of estrogen dominance; relatively high estrogen and low progesterone. In my experience, using natural progesterone routinely resolves the problem."
by Dr. John Lee M.D.

Dr Lee also suggests adding vitamin E 600 IU at bedtime, 300 milligrams a day of supplemental magnesium and 50 milligrams a day of vitamin B6.
Once the cysts have cleared up, reduce the progesterone dose to find the smallest dose that is still effective each month and continue the treatment as needed through menopause. This treatment is simple, safe, inexpensive, successful and natural.

Nutrients and herbs for fibrocystic breasts
Healthy breast tissue is smooth, of even thickness throughout, and pain-free. Most women experience at least some degree of swelling, tenderness, lumpiness, or ropelike tissue in their breasts. One common reason is fibrocystic breast disease, a noncancerous condition that affects up to 50% of women aged thirty-five to fifty. Although fibrocystic breast disease (FBD) is not cancer, or a definitive risk factor, the conditions that favor the development of FBD also favor the development of breast cancer. Naturopathic management of FBD combines lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation, and detoxifying herbs, which are all contributors for overall breast health. Herbal FBD therapy has two primary goals: reducing estrogen activity and improving liver function. Vitamin E increases the progesterone to estrogen ratio, thus reducing the relative concentration of estrogen. While several studies show favorable results, not all studies agree. Naturopaths find this in practice, too; the majority of FBD patients respond well to vitamin E therapy, but some do not. Evening primrose, high in Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, gives rise to chemicals involved in the body's response to inflammation and estrogen. Supplementation with evening primrose oil for several months has been shown to significantly reduce breast pain.

Water retention is often associated with breast tenderness. Further discomfort may come in the form of benign lumps, which enlarge as the time of menses approaches and shrink following menses. This type of discomfort may increase in menopausal years, or conversely may diminish, bringing relief from chronically tender nipples and breasts. Progesterone: In his practice of over 25 years, Dr. John Lee found that in many of his patients fibrocystic breasts were most often a sign of relatively high estrogen and low progesterone levels. He also found that "using natural progesterone routinely resolves the problem." He also found that 600 IU of vitamin E at bedtime, as well as 300 mg of magnesium and 50 mg of vitamin B a day routinely resolved fibrocystic breasts. He says "once the cysts have cleared up, you an reduce the progesterone dose to find the smallest dose that is still effective each month and continue the treatment as needed through menopause. This treatment is simple, safe, inexpensive, successful and natural."

Women with fibrocystic disease of the breast are at greater-than-usual risk of getting breast cancer later in life. Also called chronic cystic mastitis. Notes: Probable cause is excessive estrogen, particularly estradiol, and the liver's inability to detoxify it. Bowel dysfunction contributes to the toxic buildup. The liver must be fully functional in order to properly detoxify. The products listed below contain ingredients that may be of benefit to this health concern. Fibrocystic Breast Syndrome DOES NOT make you more susceptible to breast cancer. Fibrocystic Breast Syndrome
Although October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women need to be aware of their breast self-exams every month. No one, not even your doctor, knows your body like you do. Many women, as many as fifty percent, suffer from fibrocystic breast syndrome . These are benign (non-cancerous) lumps filled with fluid that change during your menstrual cycle. They can make your breasts swell and become tender, sometimes painful, just before and during your period. They are hormonally related. For this reason, the best time to examine your breasts is one week after your period. Everyone should do a breast self-examination once a month. Pamphlets and instruction is available in your doctor's office or by request from the American Cancer Society, Avon Products, or pharmaceutical companies, such as Wyeth-Ayerst. This condition DOES NOT MAKE YOU MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BREAST CANCER. What you put in your body can also make a difference in the amount of swelling and pain you have on a monthly basis. Caffeine intake can greatly influence the tenderness you may have. Limiting caffeine will help alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. Some people think of caffeine in the form of coffee only However, non-herbal teas, sodas, diet sodas, and chocolate al contain caffeine. Buffered Vitamin C taken daily is a natural way to alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. The usual dosage is 1500 mg per day. You should

Breast Self Exam and Fibrocystic Breast Condition Every woman should learn the breast self-exam (BSE) and examine her breasts once each month to feel for lumps or irregularities. Although the greatest concern is the early detection of breast cancer, it is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of all breast lumps are not cancerous. Fibrocystic change is the most common benign condition of the breast. Breast tissues changes are influenced by the menstrual cycle and the breast tissues feels least tender and full within 7-10 days after the period begins, making this the best time to do monthly BSE. It is convenient to do BSE while in the shower or bath, because wet hands make it easier to slide the fingertips across the breast tissue. Raise one hand above and behind the head, and use the opposite hand. Using the flat pads of the middle three fingers, feel for any swollen or lumpy areas. Move the fingers in small circles to feel the tissue beneath the fingers. Slide the fingers to the next area of the breast to be examined. Start at the outside border of the breast and work your way around the breast and into the nipple area. Check the area under the collarbone and under the arm. Examine the other breast in the same manner. It is also a good idea to examine the breasts while lying down. Lie flat on your back with one arm above your head and a small pillow under the shoulder. Use the same technique described above to perform this exam. Lotion may be used on the fingers to improve sensation and ease of exam. Examine both breasts in this manner.

Women after menopause produce 40% of the estrogen that they did before menopause. Progesterone levels fall to less than 1% of premenopause levels. Progesterone resensitizes the body's cells to estrogen. So estrogen pills can be cut back and eventually stopped.
    by Elizabeth Smith, M.D.
According to Dr. Lee, Theo Colborn, and other researchers, women in America and developed countries are getting too much estrogen. Where does this estrogen come from? First of all, the woman produces estrogen herself before and after menopause. Second, she may be taking estrogen by pill or by skin patch for hormone replacement or for birth control. Third, she may be getting estrogen effects from chemicals that mimic estrogens known as xenoestrogens. These xenoestrogens include estrogens fed to agricultural animals that we in turn eat, detergent break down products, plastic containers used for food and water, pesticides, and even spermicide.

    1. Women, alcohol, and heart disease Some studies have shown that women who drink one or two glasses of wine — or any alcoholic beverage — have higher levels of HDL, or "good cholesterol," which protects against heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and anything that can prevent this problem warrants serious consideration. But given alcohol’s downside, even if you don’t drink, there is no reason to start. If you do drink, do not exceed two glasses of alcohol per day (A standard drink is defined as containing half an ounce of absolute alcohol. By this measure, the typical glass of wine is four to five ounces; a serving of hard liquor is about one ounce.) Some women should not drink alcohol under any circumstances, including those who are pregnant or trying to conceive; those with a personal or family history of alcohol addiction; and those taking medication that could interact with alcohol. It also is important to know that although the studies are inconclusive, women who drink heavily may be at greater risk of getting breast cancer than those who abstain, and that heavy drinking is associated with cirrhosis of the liver, which can be more severe in women than men. Even moderate drinkers may be at greater risk of developing osteoporosis (a disease characterized by critical thinning of the bones).
