Is Massage Good For You?
Massage is a wonderful adjunct therapy for all kinds of health problems, and especially for musculoskeletal pain and other related problems such as stress, muscle tension. Also on the list of problems could be headaches, insomnia, anxiety and even Fibromyalgia and CFS. By relieving stress, massage may even help things like high blood pressure and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Besides relieving muscle spasms and pain, massage helps to increase the body's production of endorphins. There are many different kinds of massage techniques, ranging from deep tissue work to light touch and movement techniques. It is important to find a technique that feels good to you and promotes relaxation. Equally important is to find a licensed massage therapist that you are comfortable with. Please check with your physician beforehand to find out if massage would be helpful for your condition.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude:
Ten Strategies
Deborah A. Barrett
"Have a positive attitude." How many times have we heard that one? While our emotions can not cause fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, they no doubt affect our symptoms. But how can we maintain good thoughts when our bodies feel so lousy? This challenge, of course, does not pertain exclusively to chronic illness, but to any time when things do not go as we wish. But in the case of ongoing illness, seeing the positive presents a continuous struggle. Yet our moods are not perfectly correlated with our physical state. Most likely we can all recall times that despite much pain or fatigue, we were able to cope and even achieve high spirits. Perhaps the weather was perfect, good friends visited, we just accomplished something or helped somebody, making us feel good about ourselves. Other times, depression seems to take hold even when our physical discomfort is at a manageable level. Why is this? Answering this question is the key to finding optimism. To me, the vicissitudes of fibromyalgia feel like a swim in the turbulent sea sometimes it seems we have fallen and the waves continue to crash on our heads, as we fight to rise, only to be knocked down yet again. But that same ocean sometimes allows us to find a wave we can ride smoothly to the shore.

A Patient's Frequently Asked Questions about Fibromyalgia
By: David Nye MD (nyeda@uwec.edu)
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a common and disabling disorder affecting 2-4% of the population, women more often than men. Despite the condition's frequency, the diagnosis is often missed. Patients with fibromyalgia usually ache all over, sleep poorly, are stiff on waking, and are tired all day. They are prone to headaches, memory and concentration problems, dizziness, numbness and tingling, itching, fluid retention, crampy abdominal or pelvic pain and diarrhea, and several other symptoms. There are no diagnostic lab or x-ray abnormalities, but a physician can confirm the diagnosis by finding tender points in characteristic locations. Fibromyalgia often runs in families, suggesting an inherited predisposition. It may lie dormant until triggered by an infection, injury, stress, or sleep disturbance. It is closely related to the chronic fatigue and irritable bowel syndromes and to migraines. Some have suggested that these are all just different facets of the same underlying disorder.
What causes it?

... Self Help Strategies Below is a description of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), but because of its substantial symptom overlap with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), it can be viewed as applying to chronic fatigue syndrome patients as well. WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME? FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendonsthe fibrous tissues in the body. FMS used to be called fibrositis, implying that there was inflammation in the muscles, but research later proved that inflammation did not exist. Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with fibromyalgia, but it shows up in people of all ages.

is a complex problem. Please don't jump to conclusions based on the common lay-press interpretation and erroneous assumptions made by less-than-informed individuals. It is important to stay abreast of current information, but this evolving understanding of fibromyalgia is just starting to unfold. Specifically, it is my assertion that it is a disease of the central nervous system. I'm not countering by saying it's a multiple sclerosis type problem but a problem of what I call "central activation". This is a complex discussion. In my book , I do what I can to bring it down to human terms. I do not believe fibromyalgia is a muscular disease and to focus on only the muscles and the associated symptoms is missing the big picture. Fibromyalgia and its sister myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by several things:
  • muscle pain depressive symptoms impairment of daily activities interrupted sleep pattern

LUPUS means wolf ERYTHEMATOSUS means redness The name was coined in 1851 because the facial rash looked like the bite of the wolf . Many people call the face rash, the marlar butterfly rash. See for yourself.
Lupus, the disease, is believed to have been described by Hippocrates around 400 BC. Lupus is not a new disease but has been described more in the last 150 years. Approximately 25 years ago, lupus was considered a terminal disease. Today, lupus can be controlled with proper medical treatment. There is no cure for lupus. Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which the body's immune system, instead of serving its normal protective function, forms antibodies that attack healthy tissues and organs. For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few body organs; for others, it may cause serious and even life - threatening problems. The number of Americans diagnosed with lupus is estimated at 500,000. Lupus is more common that muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, leukemia and Addison's Disease. LE usually is divided into 3 groups: Discoid LE, Systemic LE and Drug-induced Lupus.
