Latest Hong Kong 'bird flu' victim critical
More animals may have to die
January 3, 1998 Web posted at: 12:55 p.m. EST (1755 GMT) HONG KONG (CNN) A 19-year-old woman is the latest to catch the so-called "bird flu" in Hong Kong, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 16. Health officials also said Saturday that animals other than poultry may have to be sacrificed, if the slaughter of 1.3 million chickens fails to wipe out the virus that has killed four people. The government said the young woman was hospitalized in critical condition. Five other patients are believed to be infected with the virus, and 10 patients who were believed to have caught the virus have made a full recovery. Health Director Dr. Margaret Chan said the chicken slaughter was the first step in trying to eliminate the type A influenza known as H5N1. Officials on Friday admitted that the slaughter was not only sloppy, but incomplete. As a dog carries away a dead chicken, health officials worry that the mysterious ailment may spread to other animals.

New flu drug may shorten aches and sniffles
September 24, 1997
Web posted at: 7:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) It's not a cure for the flu, but a new drug may save flu suffers a day or two of aching and sniffling, according to a study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. The drug, which has not yet been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is called zanamivir. A study found that on average, the drug can shorten the length of a bout with the flu by one day. "One day isn't dramatic, but that was the median," said Dr. Frederick Hayden, a professor of internal medicine and pathology at the University of Virginia who headed the study. "For the more severely ill, the net reduction was three days, and for those treated early, it was 2 to 3 days." Dr. Steve Salvatore answers questions about zanamivir What's different about this new treatment?

REVISITING THE 1918 FLU
MARCH 24, 1997
TRANSCRIPT A closer look at the worst infectious disease outbreak in human history, the 1918 influenza outbreak that killed up to 50 million people worldwide. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: That disease is influenza and specifically the 1918 flu virus that killed 675,000 Americans and more than 20 million people around the world. The outbreak probably started in the United States at an army base in the Midwest and then spread to Europe in the lungs of soldiers headed for World War I. Scientists have tried for years to find traces of the virus to study what made it so lethal. Late last week, a group of researchers reported in "Science Magazine" they’d succeeded in their search. Here to tell us about are Dr. Jeffrey Taubenberger, chief of molecular pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Doctor, I remember my grandfather in Kansas saying that so many people died at Fort Riley that they didn’t have coffins for them in 1918. Is that the way it was all over the country? DR. JEFFREY TAUBENBERGER, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology: Yes, it was clearly catastrophic, not only in the United States but really just exploded as an incredible episode all throughout the world.

It typically starts suddenly with fever, chills, headache, aching muscles, general prostration and usually a cough or other respiratory symptoms. While most people recover without complications in 1-2 weeks, flu can cause serious illness and death, especially in the very young and the elderly. Flu epidemics result in widespread illness and disruption to health and other services. A vaccine is produced every year based on the strains of virus expected to be circulating. Hong Kong officials identify 2 more 'bird flu' cases
December 26, 1997 Web posted at: 11:53 a.m. EST (1653 GMT) Little is known about how the bird flu virus is transmitted to humans HONG KONG (CNN) Health officials in Hong Kong have confirmed two more cases of the mysterious "bird flu," which has killed at least three people in the territory. A 1-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl were the latest to be diagnosed with the virus, a government statement said. The girl was listed in satisfactory condition and the boy had recovered, a statement from the Health Department said. Doctors had previously suspected the boy had contracted the virus, known as H5N1. Until May of this year, the virus had only been seen in birds. Doctors have confirmed 11 cases of the flu, and suspect the virus has sickened nine other people, including a 60-year-old woman who died this week from pneumonia. Health officials still don't know how the virus is transmitted, and the people of Hong Kong are nervous.

E-Flu is not a virus. It is a hoax.
The hoax message includes the following:
I have some very startling news for all drivers in the NWST and ICRS/IDRS Leagues. Recently, a driver in both of the Leagues, Gary Kendall, and the Director of the NWST, Dave O'Brien, came down with cases of the E-Flu.
The E-Flu is a frightening new Computer to Human Virus that has no effect on computers but can potentially make users very ill. It is passed from computer to computer through the Internet, and then from computer to Human through either keyboard contact or diskette contact.
The good news, however, is that the Pullmer University of Medicine has posted a webpage with instructions for vaccinating yourself at home against this dangerous new illness. The vaccination page can be found at http://ww4.choice.net/~dhawk/pullmer/vaccine.html
If you have read any E-mail messages from either Gary Kendall or Dave O'Brien within that past week, then you need to perform the vaccination regardless of whether or not you're actually sick yet. Even if you'r not sick, you can still take measures to prevent the E-Flu.
Also on the vaccination page is a comprehensive list of those infected as well as a list of those potentially infected. So please, view the page at

If your kitty cat shows flu like symptoms, running nose, cough, tearing eyes, ulcerated eyes, constipation, very small size, even a closed eye that might be herpes. You might first want to go to healthgene site for an overview of felineherpes- click on the the herpes profile . You might want to read up on chlamydia, a bacterial disease which also has similar eye symptoms. (Also read up on zithromax, which supposedly greatly helps chlamdyia. There is also calici virus with similar symptoms and sometimes ulcer in mouth. Some other links to articles may be found at click for other links Bacterial and viral conditions respond to different medications. Also many kitty cats have both herpes and chlamydia.
Snowy, my precious kitty cat whom I adopted as a 6 month old wasn't diagnosed for herpes until I switched vets and after his first prolapsed colon. A famous hospital in NYC just said he had snot coming out of his nose. I am convinced that the herpes virus and the frequent antiobiotics created the situation that led to the constipation and prolapse.
