03:00 AM Mar. 08, 1999 PT An early warning network may not cure influenza. But Flu Watch can give doctors, travelers, and others a head start against the virus and its erratic spread. "This is an Internet network of physicians who, through a surveillance network, are sharing information about flu 'epicenters' with each other," said Peter Livingston, president of ZymeTx
    Story Tools
    Today's Top 5 Stories
Livingston's company manufactures a new flu-detection test for doctors. On Friday, ZymeTx announced it had tapped 336 doctors nationwide to take part in its National Flu Surveillance Network, with sites in all 50 states logging their flu findings into the system. "The peak of the flu season is when physicians are more likely to use antivirals to treat you. It allows physicians to watch what's going on in their community and make appropriate treatment decisions," Livingston said. The Centers for Disease Control , the federal public-health agency, provides a flu-tracking system of its own. But there is a two-week lag between detection and notification too much time for the data to help doctors make treatment decisions.

    What is Flu?
Even if you're not among the 20,000 Americans flu kills in an average year, the bug's a bummer. Between 35 million and 50 million Americans get its chills, fevers, aches and coughs. The direct medical cost of flu is guesstimated at $4.6 billion annually (not counting lost work time). Many deaths are caused by the complication of pneumonia, a lung infection that can be caused by a virus or a bacterium. Others result from exacerbations to pre-existing conditions like diabetes, heart or lung disease. To understand flu, you've got to know something about viruses. First off, they're weird. Unlike all other forms of life, they don't have cells they're basically chains of genetic material lumped inside a protein coat. Viruses can multiply and evolve, but some experts think they're not really alive, since they can't reproduce without a host cell. Host cells are innocent victims that allow the virus to enter and commandeer its machinery to make new viral particles. To some observers, viruses are the ultimate guerilla fighters. Other virologists disagree, arguing that there really is life inside that protein coat. University of Wisconsin flu expert Virginia Hinshaw, for example, says, "To have an infectious agent that has adapted to use our machinery to reproduce, to me, that's living."

What to Do About the Flu Each winter, millions of people suffer from the flu, a highly contagious infection. It spreads easily from person to person mainly when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Flu - the short name for influenza - is caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It usually is a mild disease in healthy children, young adults, and middle-aged people. However, flu can be life threatening in older adults and in people of any age who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes or heart, lung, or kidney diseases If you are a Medicare beneficiary and have received a phone call to participate in a survey of flu and pneumonia vaccine utilization and would like additional information you can visit the official project website www.flustudy.org , send an e-mail to flustudy@hcfa.gov , or call the toll-free hotline at 1-800-MEDICARE. Take a shot against the flu, doctors say
    September 30, 1997
Web posted at: 5:51 p.m. EDT (2151 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) School is back in session, fall is in the air, and while you may not realize it, flu season is almost here. Health officials say this flu season may be less severe than last year's, but that's no reason not to be prepared. Their advice: Take a pre-emptive strike and get a flu shot. Some groups should not ignore that advice, health experts say. Those include: anyone over age 65; nursing home residents, no matter what age; people who suffer chronic heart and lung problems; those with weak immune systems; and health care workers. Health experts estimate the flu kills as many as 20,000 people a year in the United States. Most of the victims are older patients. While flu vaccines are not 100 percent effective, they are currently the only line of defense available.
    Vaccines protect against three viruses
Flu vaccines contain three virus strains, protecting you from three major viruses, said Dr. Keiji Fukuda of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. "In people who are young and healthy, it's abut 70 to 90 percent effective in keeping you from getting sick," Fukuda said.

New drug offers relieve from flu misery
    September 25, 1998
Web posted at: 7:09 p.m. EDT (2309 GMT) (CNN) Scientists in San Diego are touting a new type of drug that may make it easier to endure the flu. The pill, GS4104, is one of two promising experimental drugs in development to ease flu symptoms. The other, zanamivir, is a nasal spray. Studies funded by GS4104's makers report the drug cuts the duration of the illness by about a third and the symptoms, such as cough and fever, by about 40 percent. Complications such as ear infections and bronchitis were reduced by about half. "What we found is this study is when we compared GS4104 to placebo, meaning an inactive compound, people who received the GS recovered from their influenza more rapidly," said researcher Dr. John Treanor of the University of Rochester. With the drug, symptoms of the average flu lasted 2.9 days instead of the usual 4.3 days.

Flu Shots in Pregnancy Although most people understand the importance of a yearly flu shot for people over the age of 65, many parents overlook the need for a flu shot for their children. This is unfortunate, because most experts believe that flu epidemics begin and spread to adults from younger children. This doesn't mean that all children should get flu shots, but if your child is in one of the high risk groups mentioned below, or if he has contact with someone in a high risk group, then you should consider getting him a flu shot each year.

What What is the Flu? How Serious is it? Influenza, also called the "flu," is a highly contagious respiratory infection.
    • Symptoms.
Flu can cause fever, chills, headache, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and muscle aches. Unlike other common respiratory infections such as the common cold, influenza can cause extreme fatigue lasting several days to more than a week. Although nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can sometimes accompany influenza infection, especially in children, gastrointestinal symptoms are rarely prominent. The illness that people often call "stomach flu" is not influenza.
    • Spread from person to person.

Web posted at: 6:04 p.m. EST (2304 GMT) The Hong Kong government has imposed tighter controls on the sale of chickens from mainland China HONG KONG (CNN) Two new suspected cases of so-called "chicken flu" have been recorded in Hong Kong, and health officials said they could not rule out the possibility of human-to-human transmission. The rare and deadly influenza virus, previously found only in birds and poultry, has infected six people and is suspected of infecting three others in Hong Kong. Patients in two of the confirmed cases a child and an adult have died. Hong Kong Director of Health Margaret Chan told reporters the new suspected cases involve a 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, who are in satisfactory condition. They are cousins of a 5-year-old girl who was confirmed to have contracted the flu and was still in a hospital intensive care unit.
