    When is Foot Surgery Necessary?
    Bunions
A common deformity of the foot, a bunion is an enlargement of the bone and tissue around the joint of the big toe. Heredity frequently plays a role in the occurrence of bunions, as it does in other foot conditions. When symptomatic, the area may become red, swollen, and inflamed, making shoe gear and walking uncomfortable and difficult. If conservative care fails to reduce these symptoms, surgical intervention may be warranted. Your podiatric physician will determine the type of surgical procedure best suited for your deformity, based on a variety of information which may include X-rays and gait examination.

For many centuries, the Australian Bundjalung Aborigines bathed in the healing waters of swampy areas where the Melaleuca Alternafolia plants grew. They successfully treated skin conditions by crushing the leaves and spreading the pulp over the affected area. The Tea Tree Oil got its name from the British Explorers who observed the Aborigines brewing leaves of the tree to make a tea that was used to cure various ailments.
There are over three hundred varieties of the Melaleuca tree, but only one, the Australian Melaleuca Alternafolia, has been found to contain large amounts of natural antiseptic and fungacide properties. Abundantly grown in the northern region of New South Wales, these tall, narrow lleafed trees thrive in the sandy, light textured soil of the low lying wetlands. Planted from seed, the Australian Melaleuca Alternafolia tree grows rapidly and produces a strong deep root system that is virtually indestructable.
As an essential oil, Tea Tree Oil, has numerous and varied uses. Essential oils are the essences of plant material that are extracted by a steam distillation process. These essential oils can be combined with vegetable oils or alcohol and blended into perfumes, bath oils and cosmetics. The oils help balance, rejuvenate and stimulate the body and skin.

    Plantar Fasciitis
If you long for days when getting out of bed wasn't so tough on your feet, you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis often develops in people who have other foot conditions, especially pes planus (flat feet) and over-pronation. Flat feet are feet that have little or no arch, while over-pronation occurs when the foot rolls too far inward when people walk. Both of these conditions can cause excess stress on the plantar fascia and lead to a mild form of plantar fasciitis. A number of factors can exacerbate plantar fasciitis in those with preexisting conditions, as well as cause plantar fasciitis by themselves. People who are constantly on their feet, such as nurses, teachers and waiters, are more susceptible, as are athletes who participate in foot-stressing activities such as aerobics, volleyball, running, basketball and tennis.
