About IFFGD
GI Disorders Publication List ... aboutKidsGI.org Hypnotherapy for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders By: Peter J. Whorwell, M.D., University Hospital of South Manchester, England Unfortunately, the word "hypnosis" often conjures up a whole variety of frequently quite negative connotations even within the medical profession. Many equate the phenomenon with the mind being taken over by the hypnotist and with loss of control by the recipient, which needless to say, is completely erroneous. As a consequence of this, the whole subject is surrounded by a cloud of mystery, which regrettably is often encouraged by those who practice the technique. Although unlikely to ever happen, it would probably be best if a completely new word could be coined for that of hypnosis so that all the "baggage" that accompanies it could be left behind. It seems likely that a variety of techniques such as relaxation, yoga, transcendental meditation, reflexology, aromatherapy, and others are different methods of achieving a similar state to that witnessed in hypnosis. Hypnosis probably only differs in that it concentrates more on the "trance" element and is usually targeted at a specific problem, which in the past has most often been identified as psychological. However, we have applied the use of hypnosis in a more physical way without, of course, forgetting its psychological benefits.

The Remedyfind Gastrointestinal Disorders section includes treatments for conditions such as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); Gastritis / Peptic Ulcers; constipation and indigestion (non-ulcer dyspepsia). Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD, or "acid reflux" or "reflux esophagitis" is a condition in which acid from the stomach regurgitates into the esophagus. Most of us experience occasional reflux and the usual symptom is heartburn - the uncomfortable burning sensation behind the breastbone that most commonly occurs after a meal. In some individuals however, reflux is frequent or severe enough to cause more significant problems and is considered to be a disease. In patients with GERD, the lower esophageal sphincter muscle does not function normally. This is a muscle at the bottom of the esophagus which is usually contracted tight, closing off the esophagus from the stomach and protecting it from acid. In individuals with GERD, this muscle is either weak or relaxes inappropriately with exposure to fatty and spicy foods, certain types of medication, tight clothing, smoking, drinking alcohol, vigorous exercise or changes in body position.

ABOUT HELP CONTACT Sunday, March 30, 2003 Home Gastrointestinal Disorders > Colon Therapy: Hydrotherapy Colon Therapy: Hydrotherapy
Colon Hydrotherapy or "Colonic irrigation" is a detoxification process and constipation remedy based on the theory that fecal matter may become impacted and cling to the wall of the colon where it can affect the colon's ability to process vital nutrients and allow toxins to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The aim of Colon Hydrotherapy is to remove this waste by flushing it away with purified luke-warm water. Typically, the patient lies on a table and a sterilized tube is inserted into the rectum. Filtered water is administered under very gentle pressure and flushes the lower intestine. Various herbal solutions are sometimes added to the water, to aid in healing, detoxifying and in establishing normal muscular tone. AVERAGE MEMBER RATINGS

Healing With Homeopathy
Gastrointestinal Disorders Homeopathy can treat many gastrointestinal disorders, including:
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • colitis, ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn's
  • diverticulitis
  • hemorrhoids
  • gastritis
  • peptic ulcers
  • gall bladder stones and inflammations
  • chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • chronic heartburn and reflux oesophagitis
  • chronic vomiting
Homeopathy for bowel disorders
Those readers who attend support groups for bowel disorders - such as Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome - are aware that most people's symptoms are a bit different from their own. While there are many similarities, each person has a unique symptom pattern, and this is what homeopaths seek to understand in choosing the correct medicine. There is no single medicine that is applicable to all cases of Crohn's or Colitis or IBS, because each person's symptoms are different. The easiest way to understand this is by example. One homeopathic medicine that is frequently used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases has the following symptom pattern: diarrhea with acrid, burning, and watery stools, sometimes with mucous or blood in the stool, anxiety and restlessness, chilly and desires heat. Another medicine is indicated when the symptom pattern is as follows: diarrhea with much flatus and sputtering, involuntary stool, diarrhea worse in the morning and may drive the patient out of bed, stool mixed with jelly-like mucous, sometimes alternating with constipation. A third medicine would be appropriate if the diarrhea is very watery, profuse, and explosive in nature, with faintness or weakness after stool. If the mucous is milky white in colour, or if there is much bleeding with the stool, other medicines are indicated. These are only a few examples of the many different homeopathic medicines that are commonly used to treat bowel disorders.

We strive to provide a link between clinical research and patient care so that advancements concerning GI health result in improvements in the quality of life for those affected. IFFGD offers a community of support for the children and families affected by gastrointestinal disorders. Some gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in children are rare. For example, in the U.S. about 200 new cases of intestinal psuedo-obstruction are diagnosed in children each year. Hirschsprung's disease occurs in about 1 out of every 5,000 live births.

Gastrointestinal Disorders (GI)
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a complex system of organs involved in the transport, digestion, and absorption of nutrients. It also plays an important role in the excretion of toxic chemicals, pathogens, and by-products of digestive processes, and in balancing the absorption and secretion of electrolytes and water. Gastrointestinal diseases that interfere with these processes can have severe consequences in the quality of life for the people that suffer from them.
Important GI Diseases
Current Treatments
Medical treatments and nutrition adjustments are the primary interventions for gastrointestinal diseases; frequently used medications include anti-inflammatories, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, corticosteroids and antidiarrheals. The goals of treatment are to correct nutritional deficiencies, control inflammation and relieve painful symptoms. Vitamins, nutritional supplements, and balanced diets are also recommended for patients.
The Role of Glucagon-Like Peptide 2
Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) is a hormone that regulates the growth, proliferation and maintenance of the mucosal lining of the small intestine. Although the complete physiological function and exact mechanism of action of this peptide are still being established, preclinical studies have indicated that treatment with GLP-2 could produce a significant increase in both the mass and absorptive surface area of the inner lining of the small bowel. Intestinal absorption has been demonstrably improved following therapeutic administration of GLP-2 in animals. In addition, GLP-2 appears to have biological activity exclusively in the GI system, with no major organs or tissues affected.
