Genital warts are caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is the most common viral, sexually transmitted disease. Some strains of the virus are associated with cervical cancer. Only 5% to 10% of all genital HPV infections come to clinical attention. HPV infections, or warts, may be seen by the naked eye on the genitalia or may be picked up by a Pap Smear exam of the cervix. The virus can be spread through sexual contact by someone who shows no visible signs of HPV. This viral infection (unlike a bacterial infection) is not curable with antibiotics. It may be in one's system indefinitely, flaring up whenever you are stressed, immuno-suppressed or ill.
As with other sexually transmitted diseases, the best prevention is abstinence, or the alternative, safe sex. If a couple has been intimate for some time, however, they have probably already shared viruses. It is estimated that 15% to 20% of visible genital warts regress spontaneously within 3 to 6 months.
Genital warts may be detected at the time of a routine annual pelvic exam. At that time the doctor will look at the genitalia for any signs of warts on the inside or outside. A Pap Smear will detect any cervical HPV infection which may be subclinical or not visible to the naked eye.

Genital Warts What you need to know:
About 1 percent of all sexually active people have genital warts. They are caused by a large group of viruses called human papillomaviruses, some of which carry a risk of cervical cancer.
Genital warts are usually pink, white or gray, and they appear in small clusters. They can be hard to see, especially when they are in the internal genital tract. They may itch or burn.
Sometimes pregnancy-related hormones cause genital warts to grow or get larger. Pregnant women sometimes pass the infection to their babies. If a baby gets infected, warts can grow on the vocal cords during childhood.
What you can do: Tell your health care provider if you think you may have genital warts. If the warts grow large or uncomfortable, they can be safely removed during pregnancy with laser surgery or cryotherapy (freezing). You can protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections by following these guidelines:
  • Have sex with only one partner who does not have sex with anyone else and who does not use drugs.

Genital Warts (Condylomata Acuminata)

Introduction
Genital warts, also known as condyloma acuminata or venereal warts, are a form of sexually transmitted disease (STD). Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) which is spread by direct contact with an infected partner through vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse. These warts develop in the genital areas including the vagina, vulva, cervix, urethra, and anus of infected women, and the penis and anus of infected men.
Some genital HPV infections do not cause visible warts, yet can lead to more serious conditions such as cancer. HPV is now considered to be the primary cause of abnormal cellular changes that lead to cervical cancer. The risk for cervical cancer appears to be highest in women infected with HPV for more than six months.
High-risk HPV are associated with moderate dysplasia and carcinoma in situ. Severe HPV types have also been associated with an increased risk for other cancers, including other genital and lung cancers. Women initially infected by one type of HPV do not develop immunity to other types.
Up to one in 10 Americans has a genital HPV infection. Between 500,000 and one million new cases occur every year. The disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, race or sexual preference.

Abstract
Introduction - A recent study comparing heterosexual men with and without confirmed sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in an urban STD clinic showed that uncircumcised men were less likely than circumcised men to have genital wart detectable by clinical examination (adjusted odds ratio 0.7, 95% confidence interval 0.4, 0.9). Based on these initial findings we hypothesised that the appearance and anatomic distribution of genital warts, and possibly treatment response, may be different for circumcised and uncircumcised men. Methods - The anatomic location, appearance, number of warts, and response to treatment was investigated through review of medical records of 459 heterosexual men with genital warts detected in 1988.

human papillomavirus infection in females By Eva Martin, MD Human papillomavirus, or HPV, infection is a sexually transmitted disease , or STD, caused by a group of viruses. What is going on in the body? More than 70 types of HPV have been classified but not all cause genital warts. It is estimated that 70% of sexually active women have been exposed to HPV. Those women who become infected do not always have visible genital warts. The virus may be quiet, or not active, for a long time. Symptoms may then occur as a result of illness or stress on the immune system, such as other vaginal infections. Sexual contact with a new partner who is infected with a different type of HPV may trigger an outbreak of visible lesions. What are the signs and symptoms of the infection? Most women have no symptoms during the early stage of infection. In several studies that involved college women, nearly half were positive for HPV. However, only 1% to 2% had visible warts and fewer than 10% remembered ever having warts. If symptoms are present, they may include the following: dry, painless, cauliflower-like warts on the genitals

I have been diagnosed with genital warts. What are genital warts? Genital warts are growths or bumps caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that appear in the genital area. They are usually rough or "cauliflower-like" in texture and may be raised or flat. They may appear as a single bump or in multiple clusters and can be very tiny or occasionally more extensive. Some warts are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. Sometimes a person may not even know he or she has the type of HPV that causes genital warts. This is called “sub-clinical HPV.” The most common size of warts we see at Campus Health is about 3 mm, or a little smaller than the end of a pencil. If left untreated, they may continue to grow over a period of several months, but will eventually heal on their own over a period of months to years. What causes genital warts?

Videos ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that produce cutaneous (skin) and mucosal (membranes that line body passages) warts for which there is no cure. More than 70 types of HPV have been identified; types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 35 are transmitted sexually and cause anogenital warts . Anogenital warts caused by types 6 and 11 typically appear externally, on the penis, vulva, or anus. Types 16 and 18 cause warts on the mucous membranes (epithelium) that line the vagina, cervix, rectum, or urethra and are associated with cervical and rectal cancer. Infection is serious, although most cases do not lead to cancer. Anogenital warts may be located deep in the epithelium of the vagina, urethra, or rectum and may be confined to an early isolated outbreak, depending on their type. For these reasons, up to one-half of infected people are unaware that they have genital warts. Untreated genital warts can eventually grow, spread, and form large clusters.

STDs can be painful, irritating, debilitating, and life threatening. Incidence and Prevalence STDs occur most commonly in sexually active teenagers and young adults, especially those with multiple sex partners. An estimated 200 to 400 million people worldwide are affected—representing men and women of all economic classes, including about 70 million in the United States. Generally, STD incidence has declined in the United States over the past 15 years, although rates among certain populations, including men who have sex with men, have increased. Characteristics Most STDs cause relatively harmless disease, producing few symptoms or no symptoms. However, some produce persistent asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic disease (e.g., chlamydia). Some people carry the disease for days or weeks, while others carry the disease for longer periods, even for life. During this time, an infected individual, or

HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)
HPV is thought to be one of the most common viral STI. HPV is a virus that is spread through sex or close skin-to-skin, genital area contact with someone who is infected. There are different types of HPV that can cause different problems. Many people can be infected with HPV and not know it. Some kinds of HPV can cause genital warts. Other types can lead to cancer.
Genital Warts
For a woman who is pregnant, it's not certain what effect genital warts have on her baby. The baby may be at risk of getting an HPV infection in the throat, but experts don't believe that the warts are passed along to the baby very often. If you think you may have genital warts you should see your doctor. If you do have genital warts, no treatment can guarantee that you will be cured of your HPV infection. However, treating your warts may lower your risk of passing them along to others. Your doctor may apply medication directly onto the warts. He or she may also give you medication that you apply to your warts yourself. Even when they are treated, warts often return. But over time many people eventually clear HPV from their bodies, and don't get any more warts. The types of HPV that cause genital warts do not cause cancer. But, because you could have more than one type of HPV you could be at risk for both warts and cancer.

What Are Genital Warts?

Genital warts, also known as condylomata, acuminata or venereal warts, are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted diseases.
As the name suggests, genital warts affect the moist areas of the genital area. They may look like small, flesh-colored bumps or have a cauliflowerlike appearance. Sometimes they may be only 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter. In other situations the warts may multiply into clusters, which can be quite large.
In women, genital warts can grow on the vulva, the walls of the vagina, the perineum — the area between the external genitals and the anus — and the cervix — the neck of the uterus. In men, they may be found on the tip or shaft of the penis, the scrotum or the anus. They can also develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.
Although genital warts can be treated, they are a serious health concern. The virus that causes them — called the human papillomavirus (HPV) — has been associated with cervical cancer. It has also been linked with other types of genital cancers.
New genital HPV infections affect about 5.5 million Americans annually.

They are caused by human papilloma virus. How is the virus transmitted?
This virus is sexually transmitted by skin-to-skin contact
with an infected partner. During sexual activity, tiny scrapes and tears occur in the skin and mucous membranes permitting the virus to enter the area. The virus can also invade intact skin. The cell then sheds new viral particles which infect other cells. It can take months or years for the virus to cause warts or changes in the Pap smear. Transmission is also possible from sharing intimate clothing. The infection is highly contagious.

Warts are skin lesions caused by about 60 types of human papilloma virus that develop slowly and usually spontaneously regress just as slowly. Warts vary widely in shape, size, and appearance, but are generally hyperkeratotic, round or irregular, rough textured, painless papules found on the hands, fingers, near the nail plate , or on the foot. Genital warts are transmitted by sexual contact and are found in moist areas. These warts generally have a cauliflower look to them. Plantar warts are flat, often painful lesions of the bottom of the foot. Filiform warts are elongated growths usually on the eyelids, face, neck or lips. Warts occur worldwide. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with skin lesions or contaminated floors and instruments. Warts may also be autoinoculated. Common warts are most frequently seen in children and rarely in the elderly . Genital warts are most common in young adults who are sexually active. Plantar warts are most often seen in teenagers and school age children. Prevention
Prevention is by the avoidance of direct contact with lesions or skin contact with contaminated floors. The use of a condom may reduce transmission of genital warts.

People are constantly asking us how to find out if a partner has an STD. Well, unless your potential bedmate sports an obvious below-the-belt bump or lesion, or is oozing nasty liquids, there's no way to tell if he or she has an STD. IF there were other signs, then everyone would look for them and there wouldn't be millions of new infections every year.
Here are the most common one and symptoms. Remember, if you are sexually active you should get tested for chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV and HPV type specific, every six months. If you don't you are putting both you and your partner at risk. AND ALWAYS USE A CONDOM!
    Chlamydia
Chlamydia is transmitted mainly during vaginal or anal sex (unlikely, but possible, during oral sex) Chlamydia is especially dangerous because in women it very often has no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can leave a woman infertile. The disease can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes, sterility, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or chronic pelvic pain. Burning during urination or an unusual discharge may be the only symptoms. Men with chlamydia usually do experience this burning. It is important that infected men inform all of their recent partners. Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. How Common?
