Welcome The William A. and Anna V. Goldberg Glaucoma Service and Research Center at Wills is the largest in the country. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities evaluate the appearance and functioning of the optic nerve and ocular drainage system. Conditions ranging from genetic predisposition to impaired blood flow which increase the likelihood of glaucoma damage are investigated for causes amenable to therapy. A dynamic research program seeks to provide the evidence for current therapies and find new ones. Members of the service have introduced medical treatments and surgical techniques that are now in common practice world-wide. An interactive website which features the first chat support group for glaucoma patients is a cornerstone of the service's e-Medicine program which includes teleconsultation, teleinformatics, and research into the practicality of telescreening for glaucoma.

... Common Vision Conditions Glaucoma Glaucoma Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease in which normal fluid pressure increases within the eye. This leads to optic nerve (the structure that transmits visual information from the eye to the brain) damage which causes a gradual loss of peripheral vision (side vision). This vision loss, when left untreated, can result in blindness. An estimated three million Americans suffer from glaucoma, but half of these people don't know they have the disease. The millions of adults at high risk for the sight-threatening eye disorder can save their vision by having regular eye exams. Those individuals at higher risk for glaucoma are African Americans over the age of 40 and everyone over the age of 60. People who have diabetes, have a family history of glaucoma, have had eye surgery or an eye injury earlier in life, or are very nearsighted also are at increased risk. If glaucoma is detected early enough, it can be controlled before serious vision loss occurs. That's why it's essential to see your eye care professional on a regular basis and to follow the schedule of repeat visits that the eye doctor recommends.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. This nerve acts like an electric cable with over a million wires and is responsible for carrying the images we see to the brain. It was once thought that high intraocular pressure (IOP) was the main cause of this optic nerve damage. Although IOP is clearly a risk factor, we now know that other factors must also be involved because even people with "normal" IOP can experience vision loss from glaucoma.
    Different Types of Glaucoma
The two main types of glaucoma are open angle glaucoma, or primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), and angle closure glaucoma.
Use this simple test to determine your risk factor for glaucoma

    Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

    Angle Closure Glaucoma

    Secondary Glaucoma
    ...
    Cataracts and Glaucoma
    Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
Most people have no symptoms and no early warning signs. If open angle glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated, it can cause a gradual loss of vision. This type of glaucoma develops slowly and sometimes without noticeable sight loss for many years. It usually responds well to medication, especially if caught early and treated.

National Glaucoma Research AHAF's National Glaucoma Research (NGR) program was established in 1978 to fund research on and educate the public about glaucoma. Glaucoma, once thought of as a single disease, is actually a broad term for a certain pattern of damage to the optic nerve (the bundle of nerve fibers that carries information from the eye to the brain). This pattern usually occurs in the presence of high intraocular pressure, but contrary to popular belief, glaucoma can occur with normal or even below-normal eye pressure. Vision experts estimate that half of those affected may not know they have it because symptoms may not occur during the early stages of the disease. By the time the patient notices something is wrong, the disease has already caused considerable damage. Unfortunately, the vision lost to glaucoma is gone forever. Medications and surgery can help slow the progression of the disease, but there is no cure. The 'About Glaucoma' section has a wealth of information including the following:

National Eye InstituteÕs publication for people who are at higher risk forglaucoma. Home Health Information Are You at Risk for glaucoma?
    http://www.nei.nih.gov/health/glaucoma/glaucoma_risk.htm
Health Funding News Laboratories ... Health Information Are You at Risk for Glaucoma? CONTENT LIST What is glaucoma? What causes it? Who is most likely to get it? What are the symptoms? ... What can you do to protect your vision? What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the normal fluid pressure inside the eyes slowly rises, leading to vision lossor even blindness. This brochure is about open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease.
What causes it? At the front of the eye, there is a small space called the anterior chamber. Clear fluid flows in and out of the chamber to bathe and nourish nearby tissues. In glaucoma, for still unknown reasons, the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises. Unless this pressure is controlled, it may cause damage to the optic nerve and other parts of the eye and loss of vision.
Who is most likely to get it? Nearly 3 million people have glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in the United States. Although anyone can get glaucoma, some people are at higher risk. They include:
    • Blacks over age 40.
