History of the study of glaucoma in Welsh Terriers
The Welsh Terrier is one of Britain's oldest breeds, a sturdy compact little companion that loves life and people. As a breed WT have fewer recognized congenital or inherited diseases than most breeds. In "A Guide to Hereditary and Congenital Diseases in Dogs", (by W. Jean Dodds, DVM, et al, available on-line ), the WT had only 5 known or suspected genetic diseases. These were cataract, glaucoma, lens luxation, hypothyroidism, and von Wildebrand's disease. The latter two are common genetic diseases each known to affect over 50 breeds of purebred dogs.
Their dog "Mac" was examined by veterinary ophthamologist Dr. Dennis Olivero in Minneapolis, who remembered seeing a number of similar cases in Welsh Terriers in the past. Dr. Olivero had postulated that primary glaucoma may be an inherited disease in Welsh Terriers as it is in some other breeds, including the Samoyed and Beagle.

This increased pressure damages the optic nerve causing partial vision loss , with blindness as a possible, eventual outcome. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness in the United States. There are four major types of glaucoma:
    • Open angle or chronic glaucoma Closed angle or acute glaucoma Congenital glaucoma Secondary glaucoma
All four types are characterized by increased pressure within the eyeball, and therefore all of them can cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. Increased pressure occurs when the fluid within the eye (called aqueous humor), which is produced continuously, does not drain properly. The pressure pushes on the junction of the optic nerve and the retina at the back of the eye. This reduces the blood supply to the optic nerve, which carries vision from the eye to the brain. This loss of blood supply causes the individual nerve cells to progressively die. As the optic nerve deteriorates, blind spots develop in the field of vision.

    Glaucoma
By Judith Lee and Gretchyn Bailey ; reviewed by Dr. Vance Thompson Glaucoma can be very destructive to your vision; in fact, it's the second-leading cause of blindness in the U.S.
Your eye has pressure just like your blood, and when this intraocular pressure (IOP) increases to dangerous levels, it damages the optic nerve . This can result in decreased peripheral vision and, eventually, blindness. Glaucoma is similar to ocular hypertension but with accompanying optic nerve damage and vision loss. Glaucoma affects an estimated 3 million Americans, with 120,000 blind due to the condition. Elsewhere in the world, treatment is less available, and glaucoma ranks as a leading cause of blindness just about everywhere. Even if people with glaucoma do not become blind, vision can be severely impaired. There are two major types of glaucoma, chronic or primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and acute closed-angle glaucoma. There are other variations, such as congenital glaucoma, pigmentary glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

    Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is glaucoma? What's the difference between glaucoma and ocular hypertension? Why does my eye doctor want to do two different kinds of glaucoma tests? Who's at the most risk for glaucoma? ... Can I still have LASIK surgery if I have glaucoma? 1. What exactly is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a condition in which the eye's intraocular pressure (IOP) is too high. This means that your eye has too much aqueous humor in it, either because it produced too much, or because it's not draining properly. Other symptoms are optic nerve damage and vision loss. [top] 2. What's the difference between glaucoma and ocular hypertension? Ocular hypertension is another term for high IOP; the pressure is not high enough to cause optic nerve damage and vision loss. Read more about ocular hypertension [top] 3. Why does my eye doctor want to do more than one kind of glaucoma test? The "puff test" that most people are familiar with measures IOP. Another way doctors may measure it is by pressing an instrument called an applanation tonometer against your eye to determine how much resistance there is.

Study casts doubt on marijuana's effectiveness as glaucoma treatment
A new study finds marijuana is a relatively ineffective way to treat glaucoma
    November 13, 1998
Web posted at: 6:39 p.m. EDT (2239 GMT) AUGUSTA, Georgia (CNN) A new study that says smoking marijuana is a hazy and impractical way to treat glaucoma is the latest twist to the medical marijuana debate. The study, by ophthalmologist Keith Green at the Medical College of Georgia, found the medical benefits of smoking marijuana are slight and relief is temporary. "Glaucoma is a 24-hour-a-day disease, 365 days-a-year disease and you cannot get away from it," he said. The battle over legalizing marijuana for medical purposes has been smoldering for over 30 years. But the issue has been recently fueled by voters in five states Alaska, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Washington who passed laws legalizing the drug to ease the symptoms of certain diseases such as glaucoma, AIDS and cancer. Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is caused by an abnormal increase of fluid pressure in the eye which leads to the gradual loss of vision.
