The number of reported cases of gonorrhea increased steadily from 1964 to 1977, fluctuated through the early 1980s, increased until 1987, and since 1987 has decreased annually. The incidence of gonorrhea is highest in high-density urban areas among persons under 24 year of age who have multiple sex partners and engage in unprotected sexual intercourse. Increases in gonorrhea prevalence have been noted recently among men who have sex with men. Antimicrobial resistance in N. gonorrhoeae

What's New Index Search Contact Us May 2001 Gonorrhea What is gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). What causes gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae , a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucous membranes of the body. Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. The bacteria can also grow in the mouth, throat, and anus. How do people get gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal). This includes penis-to- vagina, penis-to-mouth, penis-to-anus, mouth-to-vagina, and mouth-to-anus contact. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. Gonorrhea infection can spread to other unlikely parts of the body. For example, a person can get an eye infection after touching infected genitals and then the eyes. Individuals who have had gonorrhea and received treatment may get infected again if they have sexual contact with persons infected with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea
WHAT IS GONORRHEA?
Gonorrhea is a curable sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . These bacteria can infect the genital tract, the mouth, and the rectum. In women, the opening to the uterus, the cervix, is the first place of infection. The disease however can spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID affects more than 1 million women in this country every year and can cause infertility in as many as 10 percent of infected women and tubal (ectopic) pregnancy. In 2000, 358,995 cases of gonorrhea were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States, approximately 75 percent of all reported cases of gonorrhea is found in younger persons aged 15 to 29 years. The highest rates of infection are usually found in 15- to 19-year old women and 20- to 24-year-old men. Health economists estimate that the annual cost of gonorrhea and its complications is close to $1.1 billion. Gonorrhea is spread during sexual intercourse. Infected women also can pass gonorrhea to their newborn infants during delivery, causing eye infections in their babies. This complication is rare because newborn babies receive eye medicine to prevent infection. When the infection occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.

Screening for Gonorrhea Including Ocular Prophylaxis in Newborns RECOMMENDATION Routine screening for Neisseria gonorrhoeae is recommended for asymptomatic women at high risk of infection (see Clinical Intervention). All high-risk women should be screened during pregnancy. There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening all pregnant women or screening asymptomatic men. Recommendations to screen selected high-risk young men may be made on other grounds (see Clinical Intervention). Routine screening is not recommended for the general adult population. Ocular antibiotic prophylaxis of all newborn infants is recommended to prevent gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum. Burden of Suffering
Up to 80% of women infected with gonorrhea are asymptomatic,12 and asymptomatic men and women comprise an important reservoir for new infection. Nearly half of all male partners of infected women, and over three quarters of female partners of infected men, are infected.13,14 While the majority of infected men eventually develop symptoms, initial asymptomatic periods may last up to 45 days.15 The prevalence of asymptomatic gonorrhea in high-risk communities is generally higher in women (4-5%)16,17 than in men (1.5-2.5%).15,18,19 Asymptomatic gonorrhea was uncommon, however, among women at a university health clinic (0.4%),17 private practice patients in Montreal (0.4%),20 and non- Medicaid patients in Boston (

14. Ties That Bind
A new line of ties is sure to stir up great party conversation. Infectious Awareables has created a line of silk and cloth clothing that feature patterns of more than 15 different infectious diseases and bacteria, as seen under a microscope. Tie and underwear patterns include gonorrhea, Herpes, Ebola, Tuberculosis, AIDS, Syphilis, Chlamydia, and Malaria. Its developer, Roger Freeman, a dentist and lecturer on infectious diseases, bought the line, which had problems selling to department stores. The ties are now popular in the scientific and biomedical communities. The Black Plague tie is sold out. Of the Malaria tie, Freeman says, the artist may have been on something when he did that one. Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) which, if not treated early, can cause serious problems, especially for women. About 1 million American men and women contract gonorrhea each year.
Symptoms
It's possible to have gonorrhea without any symptoms. If symptoms do appear, they may include discharge from the penis or vagina, the need to urinate often, burning or pain when urinating, and in women, bleeding between monthly periods. About half of the women with gonorrhea have no symptoms.
Testing
The only way to find out whether or not you have gonorrhea is to get tested. The test is simple: the doctor takes a sample of fluid from the penis or vagina and sends it to a lab.
Treatment
Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics. Common treatments use drugs such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, cefixime, ceftriaxone and most recently - azithromycin ( click here for full prescribing information ; download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader free). Azithrymycin is a convenient single-dose oral medication. The most common side effects with 2-gram azithromycin include nausea (18%), diarrhea/loose stools (14%), vomiting (7%), abdominal pain (7%), vaginitis (2%), dyspepsia (1%), and dizziness (1%). Ineffective or incomplete treatment can result in serious problems later, such as chronic lower abdominal pain, sterility, tubal pregnancy, and painful joints. In order to avoid reinfection and potential transmission of infection to others, you should stop having sex until both you and your partner are cured.

What is gonorrhea?
  • Gonorrhea, also known as "the clap," is a curable infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoea
The bacteria targets the cells of the mucous membranes including: How can I get gonorrhea?
    • Gonorrhea is passed during oral, anal or vaginal sex. It can be passed when the mucous membrane, the soft skin covering all the openings of the body, comes into contact with the mucous membrane secretions or semen of an infected person.
    • During oral sex, it is possible for gonorrhea to be transmitted from mouth-to-penis and penis-to-mouth contact, and though less so, from vagina-to-mouth or anus-to-mouth contact. Transmission is not known to occur from mouth-to-vagina and mouth to anus contact.
    • Gonorrhea can be passed even if the penis or tongue does not go all the way into the vagina or anus. If the vagina, cervix, anus, penis or mouth come in contact with infected secretions or fluids; then transmission is possible.

warning - very graphic What is Chlamydia Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis . Because approximately 75% of women and 50% of men have no symptoms, most people infected with Chlamydia are not aware of their infections and therefore may not seek health care. When diagnosed, Chlamydia can be easily treated and cured. Untreated, Chlamydia can cause severe, costly reproductive and other health problems which include both short- and long-term consequences, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is the critical link to infertility, and potentially fatal tubal pregnancy. Up to 40% of women with untreated Chlamydia will develop PID. Undiagnosed PID caused by Chlamydia is common. Of those with PID, 20% will become infertile; 18% will experience debilitating, chronic pelvic pain; and 9% will have a life-threatening tubal pregnancy. Tubal pregnancy is the leading cause of first-trimester, pregnancy-related deaths in American women.
