COMMON SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV)
(sigh-tow-MEG-a-low-VI-rus)
Common symptoms:
There are usually no symptoms with the first infection. But reinfection with CMV, or infection with other sexually transmitted organisms such as HIV and hepatitis B, may reactivate the virus and cause illness. Symptoms include:
  • irritations of the digestive tract, nausea, diarrhea
  • loss of vision.
How CMV is spread:
In saliva, semen, blood, cervical and vaginal secretions, urine, and breast milk by:
  • close personal contact
  • vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse
  • blood transfusion and sharing IV drug equipment
  • pregnancy, childbirth, and breast feeding.
Between 40 and 80 percent of Americans get CMV through contact with other children's saliva by the time they reach puberty. Adults, however, usually become reinfected through sexual activity. Women who want to become pregnant and who may have the virus should consider testing for CMV. Diagnosis: Blood test.

    Symptoms
In females, gonorrhea is often asymptomatic. When there are symptoms, they include frequent and painful urination, vaginal discharge, abnormal menstrual bleeding, acute inflammation in the pelvic area, and rectal itching. Untreated, may cause infection of the fallopian tubes (Salpingitis) which may result in sterility. Males usually do experience symptoms of gonorrhea. These include a yellow discharge of pus and mucus from the penis and slow, difficult, and painful urination. Untreated, may cause strictures of the urethra and prostatitis. The symptoms usually appear

GONORRHEA TEST KITS RECALLED BY ABBOTT LABORATORIES
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that Abbott Laboratories, Inc., has initiated a worldwide recall of 32 lots of laboratory kits used to diagnose gonorrhea. The kits have been shown to be unreliable because they may give false negative results. These test kits were distributed to hospitals and laboratories from Jan. 11 to June 24 2002. Gonorrhea is a serious, highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that affects both men and women. Women primarily suffer severe consequences from infection that is not detected and treated. Untreated gonorrhea in women can cause pelvic inflammatory disease that can lead to sterility. In pregnant women, infection can potentially cause abortion, premature delivery, or infection in the baby. If undetected and untreated in men, it can cause an infection of the urethra that makes urination painful and difficult. In both sexes, infection can spread through the bloodstream and infect the joints, skin, bones, tendons and other parts of the body. "FDA is alerting the public to this recall to help protect the public health," said FDA Deputy Commissioner Lester M. Crawford. "We want to make sure laboratories that have purchased these test kits, physicians who have ordered these tests, and people tested for gonorrhea since January receive this information so they can act upon it."

(CLAP, DRIP) WHAT IS GONORRHEA?
Gonorrhea is an infection that is spread through sexual contact with another person. The gonorrhea germs are found in the mucous areas of the body (the vagina, penis, throat and rectum). WHO GETS GONORRHEA? Any sexually active person can be infected with gonorrhea. Most often, gonorrhea is found in younger people (ages 15-30) who have multiple sex partners. Gonorrhea is reported more frequently from urban areas than from rural areas. HOW IS GONORRHEA SPREAD? Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact. This includes penis to vagina, penis to mouth, penis to rectum and mouth to vagina contact. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GONORRHEA? Men infected with gonorrhea will have burning while urinating and a yellowish white discharge from the penis. Those few women with symptoms will have a discharge from the vagina and possibly some burning while urinating. Infections in the throat and rectum cause few symptoms. HOW SOON DO SYMPTOMS APPEAR?

What is gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). What causes gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucous membranes of the body. Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. The bacteria can also grow in the mouth, throat, and anus. How do people get gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal). This includes penis-to- vagina, penis-to-mouth, penis-to-anus, mouth-to-vagina, and mouth-to-anus contact. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. Gonorrhea infection can spread to other unlikely parts of the body. For example, a person can get an eye infection after touching infected genitals and then the eyes. Individuals who have had gonorrhea and received treatment may get infected again if they have sexual contact with persons infected with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea
In 1995, 392,848 cases of gonorrhea in the United States were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Institute of Medicine, however, estimates that 800,000 cases of gonorrhea occur annually in the United States. The annual cost of gonorrhea and its complications is estimated at close to $1.1 billion. Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae , that grows and multiplies quickly in moist, warm areas of the body including the reproductive tract, the oral cavity, and the rectum. Although in women the cervix usually is the initial site of infection, the disease can spread to and infect the uterus (womb) and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This can cause infertility and ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. The disease is most commonly spread during sexual intercourse vaginal, oral, and anal. Gonorrhea of the rectum can occur in people who practice anal intercourse and also may occur in women due to spread of the infection from the vaginal area. Gonorrhea can be passed from an infected woman to her newborn infant during delivery, causing eye infections in the baby. When the infection occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.

Definition
Gonorrhea is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The mucous membranes of the genital region may become inflamed without the development of any other symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are different in men and women. In men, gonorrhea usually begins as an infection of the vessel that carries urine and sperm (urethra). In women, it will most likely infect the narrow part of the uterus (cervix). If untreated, gonorrhea can result in serious medical complications. Description
Gonorrhea is commonly referred to as "the clap." The incidence of gonorrhea has steadily declined since the 1980s, largely due to increased public awareness campaigns and the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases , such as AIDS . Still, current estimates range from 400,000 to as many as one million projected cases of gonorrhea in the United States each year. These estimates vary due to the private nature of the disease and the consequent underreporting that occurs. The majority of reported cases of gonorrhea come from public health clinics. contraception , such as condoms , are most at-risk. Reported rates vary among racial and ethnic groups.

Gonorrhea What you need to know:
Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that affects about 650,000 people in the United States each year. Gonorrhea infection often does not cause symptoms, although some women have pain when they urinate, increased vaginal discharge or abdominal pain.
Pregnant women with untreated gonorrhea are at risk for miscarriage, preterm delivery and premature rupture of the membranes. Babies who become infected during delivery can develop serious eye infections, joint infections and, sometimes, life-threatening blood infections.
What you can do:
If you are pregnant, you will probably be screened for gonorrhea during an early prenatal visit. If you are infected, you will be given an antibiotic that should cure you. Both you and your partner should be treated at the same time. You can protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections by following these guidelines:
  • Have sex with only one partner who does not have sex with anyone else and who does not use drugs.

Hassle Free Clinic Home Gonorrhea What is it? Gonorrhea is caused by a bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhea , which invades the body's mucus membranes causing inflammation and pus. Any close sexual contact, oral, vaginal or rectal, can transmit gonorrhea. Away from the warmth and moisture of the body, the bacteria quickly die. A woman's risk of infection during sexual intercourse with an infected man is about 60 - 90%. A man's risk of infection during sexual intercourse with an infected woman is 40 - 50%. In women, infection of the rectum occurs not only during anal sex, but also when infected vaginal secretions are carried toward the anus. It is possible to infect other areas of your own body, ie. touching vaginal discharge and then wiping your eye. What are the symptoms? The incubation period for gonorrhea is short (2 - 10 days). Symptoms may include the following: Vaginal/Cervical infection:
  • Increased vaginal discharge. Vaginal irritation. Burning on urination.
Oral infection:
  • Often no symptoms - a sore throat is possible.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Gonorrhea (GON-o-REE-uh) is an infection that affects the sex organs and sometimes the throat and rectum. It is most common among adults of either sex who are between 15 and 29 years old. If not treated, gonorrhea can spread throughout the body and can cause sterility.
Causes
The disease is caused by a bacteria. You catch the disease by having sex with an infected partner. The throat or rectum can become infected from having oral or anal sex.
Signs/Symptoms
Typical symptoms include a discharge of thick yellow-green fluid from the penis or vagina; fever, pain or burning when urinating; and the need to urinate frequently. The sex organs may become red, swollen, and itchy. Some women who have gonorrhea may show no signs; others may develop a smelly vaginal discharge or have pain during intercourse.
Care
The doctor will prescribe antibiotics to cure the infection. Be sure to take them exactly as prescribed. Even if you think you are well, use the entire prescription. If you stop taking the antibiotics too soon, some bacteria may remain to re-infect you.

Coming to Terms with a Sexually Transmitted Disease Diseases that Cause Vaginal Discharge: Gonorrhea Advertising Until 1991, gonorrhea was the most commonly reported STD in the United States, even though rates have been steadily decreasing since the mid 1970s. The number of cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1992 was 433,949; by the end of November 1993, the number of cases was 336,169. Some experts believe many cases go unreported, and they estimate the actual number to be about two million a year. Risk factors: You are more likely to get gonorrhea if you or your partner have casual sexual contacts with others and if you are under the age of 20. From 1981 to 1991, adolescents were the only group of Americans showing an increase in the number of cases; people aged 15 to 19 have twice the number of infections as those aged 20 to 24. People living in the South Atlantic region of the U.S. (from Delaware down the eastern seaboard) may be at higher risk because this region has the highest number of reported cases. People with limited access to health care also seem to have a higher risk for getting gonorrhea. Other groups at high risk of this or any other STD include people living in large cities, singles, those who have had past gonorrhea infections, drug users, and prostitutes.

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Gonorrhea is one of the most common infectious bacterial diseases and is most frequently transmitted during sexual activity, including vaginal intercourse and both oral and anal sex. Gonorrhea is a reportable disease and all state governments require that cases of diagnosed gonorrhea be reported to the health authorities (State Board of Health). This allows for adequate follow-up and testing of sexual contacts.
There are almost 400,000 cases of gonorrhea reported to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) each year in the United States. There are probably many cases that are treated but not reported. The total number of cases is thought to approach 1,000,000; if unreported cases are included, some estimates reach 2,000,000. A rate of 400,000 cases per year means that 1 out of every 687 Americans has gonorrhea. A rate of 2 million means that 1 in every 130 Americans are infected.
Gonorrhea is more common in large metropolitan areas, inner-city areas, populations with lower overall levels of education and people with lower socioeconomic status. Gonorrhea is most prevalent in people 15 to 29 years old. Risk factors include having multiple sexual partners, having a partner with a past history of any STD, and having unprotected sex (sex without the use of a condom).

hi alice, how long of a time frame could you have gonorrhea and not know it? The doctors say you can't track how long you have had it so how do we know? I feel my last partner gave it to me and that was nine months ago. is that possible? Thanks. I can't get much information in regards to this subject so I have no idea. And it can't be received from sitting on a toilet or anything of that sort, correct? Dear Reader, Although you are more likely to have symptoms when infected with the sexually transmitted disease (STD) gonorrhea than with other STDs, such as chlamydia, the time frame could be indefinite since one of the most common symptoms of infection with gonorrhea (and other STDs) is NO symptom . As a result, if you're asymptomatic, there's no way of knowing how long you've had gonorrhea unless you are certain that your last partner from nine months ago was infected with it. Regardless of how it was transmitted, it's important to get tested, examined, and treated, since gonorrhea is best treated early to prevent complications. See a provider as soon as possible if you haven't already. If left untreated, gonorrhea may cause pelvic inflammatory disease (read Chlamydia?
