publications Estimated Annual Costs of Campylobacter-Associated Guillain-Barre Syndrome Jean C. Buzby, Tanya Roberts, and Ban Mishu Allos
Agricultural Economics Report No. (AER756) 40 pp, July 1997 Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune reaction that can cause acute neuro-muscular paralysis. Of an estimated 2,628 to 9,575 new U.S. cases with GBS annually, 526 to 3,830 are triggered by infection with Campylobacter, the most frequently isolated cause of foodborne diarrhea. Estimated total annual costs of Campylobacter-associated GBS of $0.2 to $1.8 billion plus previously estimated costs of campylobacteriosis ($1.3 to $6.2 billion) add to total annual costs from Campylobacter of $1.5 to $8.0 billion (1995 dollars). Assuming 55-70 percent of costs are attributable to foodborne sources, costs of campylobacteriosis from food sources ($0.7 to $4.3 billion) and costs of associated GBS ($0.1 to $1.3 billion) combined equal total annual costs of $0.8 to $5.6 billion from foodborne Campylobacter. Reducing Campylobacter in food could prevent up to $5.6 billion in costs annually. Keywords: Campylobacter, cost-of-illness, foodborne pathogens, Guillain-Barré syndrome, lost productivity, medical costs

This 'thing' They Call the Guillain-Barre Syndrome Dedicated in loving memory of... Sherrie Denise Baker Mitchell
Always Under the Doctor's Care
Denise was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was only 17 months old. This disease caused many complications for her all of her life. But the one we never knew about was the one that took her life when she was only 37 years old.
We never knew about Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
Why I feel I need to tell you about this disease now when it is too late for Denise...
Denise always wanted to understand everything about her health conditions. Complications from diabetes had caused her to have severe heart problems and she was a candidate for a heart transplant before she died. She had an excellent understanding of diabetes and heart disease. But Guillain-Barre Syndrome was something she was not familiar with.
It hurts me to know she died with something we knew so little about. There needs to be more information about this awful disease that can paralyze or kill in a matter of days. It needs to be understood that it can happen to anyone, at any age, without warning.
Also, I have been given referrals to excellent services for those who have lost a loved one. Those links are listed on these pages for anyone who might need them. It is my hope that this page will make you more knowledgeable about GBS.

    University of Iowa
    Guillain-barre Syndrome
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a temporary inflammation of the nerves and spinal cord. It causes weakness and paralysis in the extremities that can progress to the chest and face. The syndrome typically occurs after recovery from a viral infection or, in rare cases, following an immunization. It can occur at any age, but is most common between 30 and 50. It goes away completely in more than 9 out of 10 cases. Some people may have mild long-term loss of reflexes in the feet and legs. The outlook is best if symptoms clear within 15 to 20 days of onset. The causes are not well understood. It may be due to the body's immune system attacking the nerves. The outlying nerves become inflamed and begin to lose their outer layers. About 80 percent of the people who get it have a history of a recent minor illness with fever. This could be a cold, flu, or sometimes a stomach flu. Guillain-Barre syndrome has also occurred after surgery or receiving a rabies or swine flu vaccine, and with certain cancers and lupus. Muscle weakness usually appears in the legs first. It can extend to the arms and face in 1 to 3 days. There is often loss of the sense of touch at the same time. There may also be numbness or tingling. Stiffness and cramping pain, like a "charley horse," often occur. Deep, aching muscle pain is also common.

Intravenous Immunoglobulin is Preferred Therapy for Guillain-Barre Syndrome
    Question
    • An 8-year old girl presents with one week of progressive ascending motor weakness, subsequently diagnosed as Guillain-Barre syndrome. Consideration is given to therapy with plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulin.
    Clinical Bottom Lines
  • Intravenous immunoglobulin (0.4 g/kg daily for 5 days) is equivalent to plasma exchange (five 50 ml/kg exchanges over 8-13 days) for treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults. Therapy with both plasma exchange and immunoglobulin conferred no additional benefit. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy is less expensive and is easier to administer.
  • Summary of Key Evidence
  • 379 adults were randomized to receive either plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulin, or both. Inclusion criteria were severe disease (aid needed for walking), age over 16 years, and onset of disease within the past 14 days. Patients were followed up for 48 weeks.
