Men's Health -
Halitosis by Dr Rob Hicks What is it? What happens? Why does it happen? ... Treatments What is it? Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. It's very common and affects most people from time to time. Social anxiety, embarrassment, and isolation are its main effect on someone once they realise their breath smells. The effects range from simply not getting a snog to (in rare cases) suicide What happens? Friends and colleagues usually notice the malodour before the individual does. The majority of sufferers are oblivious to the fact that they have bad breath until a good friend points it out to them. Once aware that they have bad breath they'll often obsessively check their breath (remember the time when Mr Bean was waiting to meet royalty at a film premiere?) going to extremes to ensure that their breath doesn't smell, even after they've solved the problem. Why does it happen?

This vexing problem can be broken down into three main sources, the determination of which is needed in order to resolve.....external, intraoral, and extraoral. External Causes - This is the most widespread cause of transient bad breath. Many foods and drinks can cause mild to severe halitosis (garlic, onions, cheeses, alcohol, etc,). Most people are aware of these culprits and they cause little chronic problem. Smoking is a real breath killer, which can only be controlled by quitting. Intraoral Causes- The mouth itself is by far the most common source of halitosis. The culprits here are bacteria producing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These bacteria are found throughout the mouth but are most common on the surface of the tongue and in the tissue pocket below the gum line adjacent to each tooth. These bacteria thrive with poor oral hygiene and gum disease states (

Garlic, cigarettes, and other culprits I've been reading about "halitosis clinics." How would doctors there analyze my breath? What's the link between gum disease and bad breath? ... When should I see my dentist about bad breath? Do you fear your breath is strong enough to scare small children? You might be mistaken. People are notoriously inept at assessing the odor of their own exhalations. A breath-mint addict who constantly worries about his breath may never have had a problem. At the same time, a person with truly noxious breath may be baffled when friends start offering mints or backing away during a conversation. If you're worried about your breath, get a second opinion: Ask a close friend or loved one if your breath is up to par, and urge them to be honest. If the news isn't good, don't panic. Bad breath doesn't have to be permanent. By taking a few simple steps, you can freshen your breath and win back your confidence. Chief cause of bad breath: Bacteria Bad breath, also known as halitosis, may go far beyond a tinge of garlic or onions. Like other types of body odor (the aroma of sweaty feet, for instance), many forms of halitosis are the handiwork of bacteria. When the germs that live in the mouth break down food particles and other debris, they often foul the air with highly pungent chemicals.

Halitosis - the Problem
Of all of the non-fatal maladies that afflict the human body, fear of bad breath may be one of the most common and embarrassing. Bad breath is democratic, affecting male and female, the rich and poor, the young and old of all races. It is demoralizing, for it can strike at anytime without warning; early in the day with morning mouth, at noon after a power lunch, during a stressful business presentation, or in the evening to cloud the emergence of social possibilities. It is so traumatic that many people hesitate to mention it to their physicians and dentists. Fear of bad breath fuels the 1 billion a year mouthwash industry! This Internet report for my patients and friends includes the latest research on bad breath and gives some simple remedies for minimizing and dealing with the problem. DIVERSE BACTERIAL POPULATIONS MAY CAUSE HALITOSIS
Individuals suffering from halitosis (chronic bad breath) may harbor different bacterial populations on the tongue than healthy individuals according to researchers from the University of Michigan and Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Their findings appear in the February 2003 issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology In the study, scrapings from the tongue dorsa of subjects with and without halitosis were collected and analyzed. Results show that the predominant microbial presence of those subjects with halitosis varied from the healthy subjects. Specifically, the bacterium Streptococcus salivarious was found in both subjects but at much greater levels in healthy patients. “The tongue dorsum harbors a highly diverse, yet characteristic, bacterial population. In healthy subjects, S. salivarius was by far the predominant species. In contrast

Resources About Cosmetic Dentistry: Halitosis - Bad Breath
Halitosis - Bad Breath
Just about everyone has bad breath (Halitosis) at some time, with approximately twenty five percent of people having bad breath on a regular basis.
While about ten percent of chronic cases of halitosis are due to the metabolism of certain types of medications, medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, or liver disease, the other ninety percent of people with bad breath can blame the degradation of naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria thrive in dark, oxygen-poor environments like your gums and the back of your tongue. Typically fifty percent of the bacteria are in the back of your mouth under taste buds. Your taste buds have a mushroom shape which provides the bacteria with the shady environment in which to thrive.
For chronic bad breath, the problem may be easily resolved by using good oral hygiene. If this does not resolve the problem, consult your dentist immediately.
You can keep your mouth smelling fresh by proper brushing, flossing, keeping your mouth moist and chewing sugarless gum. A tongue scraper used on a regular basis will also reduce bacteria at the back of your mouth. Avoiding foods containing sulfur (onions, garlic, and cabbage) will also help as these foods produce sulfurous gases as you digest them.

What does the term halitosis mean?
Just in case you are wondering, halitosis is the medical word for bad breath. Halitosis is derived from the Latin word "halitus", which means breath, and the Greek suffix "osis", which means condition.
How do you test for halitosis?
Researchers have for many years tried to develop scientific ways to quantify different degrees of halitosis. It's easy to understand how the appraisal of halitosis by smelling might vary from one individual tester to another, but researches have also had to cope with the fact that any one tester's evaluation of a person's halitosis will deviate too. This variance depends on factors such as hunger, menstrual cycle, head positioning, and the number of consecutive times the tester has been exposed to an odor.

What causes bad breath?
Most people suffer from bad breath occasionally. However, if it becomes permanent you should consult your dentist. Most adults suffer from bad breath occasionally, although it may affect up to a quarter of adults on a regular basis. Bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. However, there are several other possible causes that affect the airways, oesphagus and stomach that can also lead to bad breath.

Bad breath
, as they say, is better than no breath at all. And as George Orwell said in 'The Road to Wigan Pier', 'You can have affection for a murderer, but you cannot have an affection for a man whose breath stinks.' Nor a woman either, I hasten to add, in these sexually egalitarian times. Yet halitosis is a common and universal problem that can lead to a significant amount of social disharmony and embarrassment.
Factfile
Morning breath
Occasional bad breath
The commonest causes of occasional halitosis include smoking cigarettes or cigars, drinking alcohol or eating certain foods. Culprits that are often blamed include onions, garlic, curries, cured foods like salamis and cooked foods such as kippers. In addition to making the breath smell 'like an ashtray', smoking also reduces the flow of saliva in its own right and therefore further exacerbates the problem.
