Social Hygiene Handbook - 2nd Edition LEPROSY (HANSEN'S DISEASE) CHAPTER 17 Hansen's disease is an ancient stigmatizing disease of mainly the skin, peripheral nerves, eyes and nose. It is a notorious cause of blindness, nasal, hand and feet deformities with neurotrophic ulceration and neurotrophic ankle and feet joint changes. It is widespread in the world especially in Tropical Africa, South and Central America, India and other parts of Asia. In recent years it has declined worldwide with introduction of multiple drug chemotherapy, intensified treatment and improved living conditions. In 1986, 5.4 million patients were registered worldwide and this fell to 2.4 million by 1994. The leprosy burden drops by 68% in the global prevalence since 1985. Leprosy elimination in the Western Pacific region is feasible with following statistics in 1994: 39,911 registered cases, with a prevalence rate of 0.25/10,000, down from a prevalence rate of 1.7/10,000 in 1985 12,694 new cases with a detection rate of 0.08/10,000 over 95% Multi-drug therapy (MDT) coverage in 1994 (8.8% in 1986)

VISAS Evangemed Ministries Evangemed Home Our ministries: We are interacting with individuals and churches to bring the love and message of Christ to hurting people. We are working to raise resources for the development of churches, schools, feeding centers, orphanages, clinics and hospitals in Brazil. Our domestic ministry focuses on advancing God's Kingdom through a lay health movement that promotes health, reconciliation, and the gospel of Jesus Christ in poor and underserved communities.We identify and form partnerships with leaders called to God to serve the health needs of the poor in their communities. We assist those leaders in implementing Christian lay health care programs that promote both physical and spiritual well-being. Evangemed has entered into a strategic partnership with many organizations, to enlarge the vision and work at various levels. We are trusting the Lord to provide us with more recruits for this important work. EvangeMed: Embracing our Evolution We began our ministry with only one medical trailer in Rio de Janeiro. Our outreach programs have since expanded to other regions. As a result, our vision and activities have evolved.
