An allergy is an overaggressive immune response triggered by ingesting certain foods, touching certain substances, or inhaling an irritant such as pollen or animal dander. Allergies to pollen, spores, mold, and dust (also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis) affect the respiratory system and are usually the most difficult to control. Symptoms of hay fever are sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes and nose, and headache. Hay fever is often seasonal (when pollen is in the air), but if constantly exposed to an offending substance (e.g., pet dander), symptoms can last year-round. From a naturopathic viewpoint, allergies are often associated with weak adrenal, immune, and digestive functions. Natural treatments are used to support and improve those functions and to alleviate hay fever symptoms. For seasonal allergies, beginning natural treatments (e.g., Stinging nettles ) 1 –2 months before the season starts can help reduce the severity of symptoms. Good health can help ease allergy symptoms, and good health starts with nutrition. People sensitive to airborne allergens may also be sensitive to certain foods. Identifying and removing those foods from the diet can greatly improve health and reduce allergy symptoms. This is best accomplished by the

Paul Brown, environment correspondent Tuesday February 4, 2003 The Guardian
Spring this year will be heralded by the sound of sneezing, coughing and nose blowing as the nation's 12 million hay fever sufferers make an early start to the season. Climate change means that the trees and grasses most associated with hay fever are flowering early.

(Allergic Rhinitis)
DESCRIPTION
An allergic response to airborne allergens that affects the eyes, nose, sinuses, throat, and bronchial tubes in the lungs. The name is confusing since hay does not cause an allergic reaction and there is no fever.
Attacks flare up in pollen season and disappear when it is over.
FREQUENT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Itching, watery eyes.
Frequent sneezing; stuffy nose with a clear discharge.
Itching in the roof of the mouth. Wheezing (sometimes).
Burning in the throat.
CAUSES The body’s immune system produces allergic antibodies which release a chemical called histamine, which in turn produces swelling and irritation in sensitive areas (nose, sinuses, eyes). Airborne allergens causing an allergic sensitivity include: Pollen from weeds. flowers, grasses and trees. Mold. Dust Mites. Tobacco smoke and other air pollutants. RISK INCREASES WITH Medical history of allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma. Smoking. Spring and autumn. Most plants produce pollen during these seasons. Family history of allergies.

Hay Fever
Do you suffer from a runny or stuffy nose a lot of the time? In the U.S., about 40 million people do. This problem is called rhinitis . If you sneeze and have a runny or stuffy nose during the spring, summer or fall allergy seasons, this is called seasonal allergic rhinitis or "hay fever". Hay fever is the most common type of allergy problem. It mainly affects the eyes and nose. Hay fever symptoms include sneezing, itching, runny or stuffy nose and red, watery eyes. Rhinitis can be a problem all year or only some of the year. It can be a problem when inside or when outside. Allergy symptoms are caused when someone has a problem when around a certain substance. These substances are called allergens. They can be inside, such as cats or dust . They can be outside such as tree and grass pollen in the spring and weed pollen and molds in the summer and fall. Hay fever is mainly an allergy caused by outdoor allergens.
How Can You Manage Symptoms?
The best way to prevent hay fever is to avoid the things to which you are allergic. Because hay fever is caused by outdoor allergies, this can be hard to do. There are some things you can do to help:
  • Keep your doors and windows shut during pollen season.

WHILE MOST people know that spring and fall are prime time for allergies, few realize that hay fever makes conditions ripe for sinusitis, the fancy term for swelling of the hollow cavities within the fine bones around the eyes and behind the nose.
The result for some 37 million Americans: coughing, sneezing and congestion coupled with headache, fatigue, muscle pain and a feeling that your head is so full it is going to burst. Some suffer acute disease, which can be thought of as a sinus attack lasting a few days to weeks, while others develop chronic sinusitis, which persists for months or years.
THE ALLERGIC CONNECTION
The common cold is the most common cause of acute sinusitis, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. But hay fever is at the root of many sinus attacks, experts say.
As various plants, weeds and trees bloom in the spring and fall, they release tiny particles known as pollen into the air that can set off allergies. And allergies, in turn, can trigger swelling of the sinuses and nasal mucous linings, Borish explains.

What is hay fever ?
Hay fever is the commonest form of allergy in the UK
Hay fever is the commonest form of allergy in the UK affecting up to 20% of the population of the UK, which would be up to 10 million sufferers. It is an allergy to pollen. Hay is produced from grass, and grass pollen is the most common culprit for producing hay fever symptoms, but tree pollen, flower pollen, and fungal spores (the fungus equivalent of pollen) also produce the same symptoms in sensitive people. Allergic rhinitis is the medical word for hay fever Hay fever is also called a 'summer cold' - but it is an allergy, while a cold is caused by a virus. The symptoms can be the same though, with sneezing and a runny nose, but hay fever will not cause a fever, despite its name. The timing of the symptoms is the best guide to decide which is which. Colds only last a week or two, and are usually in the winter, while hay fever causes symptoms which can last longer, and can come and go, depending on the pollen levels each day, and are normally at the same time each year, in the spring and summer. The nose is the main target for hay fever

An allergy is the body's hypersensitivity to substances in the environment. Allergic reactions range from mild itching, sneezing or eczema (inflamed, itchy skin), to severe hives, hay fever, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

The most common symptom of seasonal allergies is allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis closely mimic those of the common cold.

Once the causes and severity of the patient's allergies are determined, the doctor can prescribe a treatment plan. The most common treatment plans include avoiding the allergen and allergy medications including antihistamines and nasal sprays.

Allergy shots, also known as immunotherapy, can offer long-lasting relief for many people. The allergy patient receives a small injection of the offending allergens usually twice a week at first, then less often with larger doses as time goes by. These small doses desensitize the body's immune system to each allergen.

The Allergy Guide - Allergic Conditions
Summer Hay fever What are the causes? What are the symptoms? What is the treatment? First Aid ... Oral Allergy Syndrome Summer Hay fever is also called seasonal allergic rhinitis because it only occurs during the spring and summer pollen season. This condition is similar to allergic rhinitis although they both have slightly different types of symptoms and occur when an allergen causes inflammation and irritation of the delicate linings of the nose and eyes. 16% of the population suffer with Allergic Rhinitis, of these, 8% have perennial symptoms, 6% perennial and seasonal symptoms and 2% have seasonal symptoms alone*. As with asthma and eczema , the incidence of allergic rhinitis is increasing and it runs in families. *Stats from ABC of Allergies, Edited by S Durham et al., British Medical Journal, 1998. What are the causes? Hay fever is caused by breathing in pollen and by pollen getting in the eyes. You can get hay fever at any time from early spring to late summer, depending on what pollen or pollens you are allergic to. The pollens most likely to cause early spring problems are those from trees such as the Silver Birch, Ash, Oak and London Plane.
