The girl, whose family has asked to remain anonymous, is in good health after the January 30 procedure at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. She celebrated her 11th birthday three days after the six-hour operation. She currently is on a waiting list for a heart transplant. Known as the DeBakey VAD, after the famed Texas heart transplant surgeon Michael DeBakey, the unit is currently undergoing clinical studies. It is made by MicroMed Technology, a Houston company. (For details, see www.micromedtech.com). Heart pumps, also known as ventricular assist devices (VAD), are among the advances in medicine giving greater hope to people needing heart transplants. Someday, improvements in the device may help patients avoid transplants completely, doctors say. Eighteen months ago, a similar procedure was performed on a 10-year-old child at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, using a partially-implantable pump. She lived with the device for 53 days before getting a heart transplant. She's now back in school, playing soccer, hockey and basketball, according to Dr. Robert Ross, a Children's Hospital pediatric cardiologist and the girl's doctor.The DeBakey device is implanted completely in the chest and attached to the heart, to help pump blood. It is a tiny 1-by-3 inch device that weighs 4 ounces. It's 1/10 of the size of adult devices, making it a good device for pediatric patients, U-M surgeons said. The UM team was led by Dr. Eric Devaney, pediatric cardiac surgeon.

The operation marked the first heart transplant to be done in UCTMC since the official opening on February 15, 2002. Loganathan Roy Naidu from Port Elizabeth was very ill when he was brought to Cape Town two months ago to await a donor heart.
