Using a human hemangioma explant model, we show that IGF2 promotes sprouting from intact hemangioma tissue. In addition, several angiogenesis-related factors including integrins alpha v beta 3 and alpha 5 beta 1 are present in proliferating hemangiomas. During the involuting phase, an increase in several interferon-induced genes was observed. These studies provide a foundation on which to build further mechanistic investigations into angiogenesis using hemangiomas as a model. We are currently designing and will shortly implement a prospective, random clinical trial to evaluate the usefulness of systemic IGF2 as a prognostic indicator in children with hemangiomas.

Vascular Malformations and Hemangiomas What is a hemangioma?
A hemangioma is a type of birthmark. It is the most common benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the skin. Hemangiomas may be present at birth (faint red mark) or may appear in the first months after birth. A hemangioma is also known as a port wine stain, strawberry hemangioma, and salmon patch. What is a vascular malformation?
A vascular malformation is another type of birthmark, or congenital (present at birth) growth, made up of arteries, veins, capillaries, or lymphatic vessels. There are several different types of malformations and they are named according to which type of blood vessel is predominantly affected. A vascular malformation is also known as lymphangioma, arteriovenous malformations, and vascular gigantism. What is the difference between a hemangioma and a vascular malformation?
Most hemangiomas are not usually present at birth or are very faint red marks. Shortly after birth, however, they grow rapidly - often faster than the child's growth. Over time, they become smaller (involute) and lighter in color. The process of involution may take several years. Vascular malformations are present at birth and enlarge proportionately with the growth of the child. They do not involute spontaneously and may become more apparent as the child grows.

71. Large Cavernous Hemangiomas: The Need For Closer Monitoring
Clinical Article. Large Cavernous hemangiomas The Need for Closer Monitoring. Abstract. Most hemangiomas in children follow a clinically benign course.
http://www.int-pediatrics.org/newip/volumes/volume_18/18_1/case/simon.htm
International Pediatrics Volume 18, Number 1 Clinical Article Large Cavernous Hemangiomas: The Need for Closer Monitoring Neal P. Simon, MD; Michael W. Simon, MD, PhD, FAAP Address reprint requests to Neal P. Simon, MD, 699 West Drive, RR208, Indianapolis, IN 46202. Abstract Most hemangiomas in children follow a clinically benign course. However, large (cavernous) hemangiomas may be more dynamic in nature. Rapid growth of large hemangiomas may result in compression and distortion of neighboring tissues, causing threatened or actual impairment of organ function which may be life threatening. Two cases of children with large, dynamic hemangiomas are presented. These cases emphasize the need for clinicians to take a more aggressive monitoring and treatment approach to large hemangiomas in children, and to communicate potential dangers to the families. Biopsies of lesions should be considered more often to help determine a more appropriate and specific therapeutic approach. Int Pediatr. 2003;18(1):30-32. Full Article in PDF

Laser treatment with the VersaPulse Laser can significantly improveor remove these types of vascular birthmarks and hemangiomas.
http://www.drslaserctr.com/pages/laserbirthmarks.html
About Us Services Products Meet the Doctors ... Home Vascular lesions (port-wine stain, hemangioma, angioma) are made up of a network of blood vessels. These vessels are close to the skin surface, causing the skin to be colored pink, red, or purple. Laser treatment with the VersaPulse Laser can significantly improve or remove these types of vascular birthmarks and hemangiomas. Laser surgery has also been shown to improve keloid scars by reducing their redness and thickness.
Patient Assessment
  • Hemangiomas, port-wine stains, venous malformations and lymphangiomas are generally present from infancy. These lesions are classified as congenital (from birth) and frequently appear on or around the head and neck.
  • Cherry angiomas, pyogenic granulomas, and venous lakes may be a result of trauma, hormones, photo (sun)damage or may be simply present as a spontaneous disorder. These lesions are classified as acquired (can occur anytime) and appear anywhere on the body.
  • Keloid scars are raised, firm nodules that grow beyond the site of an injury or trauma to the skin. Any part of the body can form a keloid, but the most connon areas are the earlobes, shoulders, chest, upper back, and back ot the neck. Generally these scars are more frequently seen in patients with darker skin tones, but anyone can develop keloid scarring.
A patient may present for treatment with the smallest hemangioma, to the largest port-wine stain. Each patient will be evaluated by a physician to determine suitability for laser treatment. A medical history, as well as details of any past treatment for these types of lesions is necessary prior to treatment with the laser.

SUMMARY Purpose/Methods: We present three men aged 20, 47 and 51 years old affected with a circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) who have been treated with episcleral brachytherapy 125I.
