CSF is continuously absorbed into the blood stream and the amount of pressure is kept within a narrow range. If the flow of fluid is obstructed at any point, it accumulates in the ventricles causing them to enlarge and compress surrounding brain tissue. In babies - but not in older children or adults - the head will enlarge. Treatment may be by insertion of a 'shunt' to redirect the excess CSF or, in some cases, by a third ventriculostomy. This will entail a hole being bored in the floor of the 3rd ventricle to aid the impaired CSF flow. Symptoms caused by raised pressure usually improve, but other signs of brain damage may remain. These can include subtle learning difficulties. Shunts can become blocked leading to headache, nausea, photophobia, inertia and irritability. Chronic infection may cause gradual deterioration in overall performance. Medical advice should be sought if a shunt blockage is suspected.

    Kori 1997
I wanted to create a place for loved ones to come and learn a little more about hydrocephalus. My oldest daughter, Kori, has hydrocephalus. She is now 5 years old. She was diagnosed when I took her in for her 2-month well baby check-up. She was shunted the following morning at The Children's Hospital, in Denver, Colorado. When she was an infant, I would have given anything to know what to expect from her as she grew up. Nobody told us that she may be developmentally delayed or that she would be at risk for learning disabilities. I have learned so much in the past few years, that I would hope that I could help somebody else. Above all, I just want everybody to know that Hydrocephalus is not a death sentence. Children are amazingly resilient, and with a lot of love, patience, and hard work, children with hydrocephalus can grow to achieve great things! So, sit back, check out my links to other hydrocephalus sites, read Kori's story, but most of all check out the links to the personal web pages. Upon them you will meet some amazing children! Don't forget to sign my guest book! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
These were both taken when she was 2 mos old. This is how she looked 5 days before she had her

Melissa's Journey
A Story of Hope and Courage.
This page is to introduce you to my daughter Melissa,
she is 18 years old and a junior at our local High School.
She likes music, videos and she loves little children
especially babies. She dreams of the day she will become
a mother. This all sounds pretty normal I guess but
the part of her life that we want people to know about and
possibly help with is she has also had 40 shunt revisions
for a condition she has called hydrocephalus
She also has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder,
and is developmentally delayed. Melissa has not been one of the lucky ones that normal medical treatment works for, no one understands exactly why (and we have been to many doctors, some of the best in the east). Melissa's joumey started at birth when she was born 8 weeks too soon, she developed spinal meningitis at birth and because of the meningitis and respiratory distress she was suffering she developed seizures at 3 days old. Her first 6 weeks of life were spend in the neonatal intensive care unit as we all waited and prayed she would continue to survive another day. In those first weeks we had no idea what we were up against and all we wanted was to be able to have our beautiful daughter live. We would deal with whatever else we had to as time went on. She was able to leave the hospital when she was six weeks old but we only had her home for three days before we found out she would be going back four days later to have a shunt placed to treat the hydrocephalus that had began before she was even discarded from the hospital.

Wade’s Center for Hydrocephalus A potentially life-threatening condition, hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. More than 500 babies are born annually in the United States with hydrocephalus. Although the condition can be treated by the surgical insertion of a shunt, which drains the CSF into the abdomen, a cure and/or a way to prevent hydrocephalus has proven elusive. Wade Phillips was one of those babies born with hydrocephalus, also known as "water on the brain." When Wade was born in 1997, he underwent surgery to insert a shunt and spent five weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Wade’s grandfather Larry Phillips decided that the best way to help his grandson would be to help find a cure for hydrocephalus. As a result, Wade’s Center for Hydrocephalus was created through a large donation from the Phillips family. Located in the Health Research Institute at Orlando Regional Healthcare, Wade’s Center for Hydrocephalus is one of only five centers in the world dedicated to finding a cure for hydrocephalus. The goals of Wade’s Center are to: find improved treatment methods, increase prevention and intervention, better understand potential causes and mechanisms of injury and cure hydrocephalus. Research at Wade’s Center has led to a revolutionary new shunt procedure developed by Dr. Jogi Pattisapu, pediatric neurosurgeon and Wade’s Center medical director. Known as Percutaneous Endoscopic Recanalization Catheter (PERC), this less invasive procedure allows doctors to unclog a shunt without patients undergoing an open surgical procedure. By inserting a tiny wire with a microscopic camera in the shunt, doctors can locate and remove the blockage and make sure the shunt is working properly.

DEDICATION
I dedicate my website to Doctor John Parker Mickle, Adjunct Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Research Faculty, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, and my daughter, Gina Marie. The following "categories" of information was provided to me in 1978. It was the only information I had available to read while I waited through the initial shunt surgery of my two-week old daughter. I have referenced that information throughout this website and add links to information and resources I find. It is hoped that the more information I can provide, will give insight to VP Shunt recipients and their families. GET INFORMED!

NEUROMEDICINE
Hydrocephalus
The normal brain has four pockets, called ventricles, which are filled with fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (or CSF). The CSF is constantly being produced and is responsible for nourishing the brain and spinal cord. The CSF flows through a pathway from the brain, down through the spinal canal and is eventually reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Hydrocephalus is a condition that occurs when either too much CSF is produced, the CSF is not reabsorbed into the bloodstream or the normal flow pathway is blocked.
Types of hydrocephalus
Obstructive hydrocephalus
There is an obstruction in the flow of CSF within the normal pathway.
Communicating hydrocephalus
There is no block in the flow of CSF, but the CSF is not absorbed properly back into the bloodstream
Normal pressure hydrocephalus
Usually occurs in older age groups and is due to a lack of properly functioning brain structures.
Secondary hydrocephalus
Usually results from an infection (such as meningitis) or a severe head injury.
Hydrocephalus is a condition some infants are born with or may acquire later in life. It is important to determine the cause of hydrocephalus, as the treatment often depends on the cause.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS PROGRAM
ADULT HYDROCEPHALUS DIAGNOSES INDEX What is normal pressure hydrocephalus? NPH is a disorder usually involving the elderly that presents primarily with difficulty in walking. The difficulty has been described as a "magnetic gait," one in which the patient feels that his or her feet are stuck to the floor as if there were magnets on the soles of their shoes. A person with NPH usually has problems initiating their gait - typically having to take many tiny steps in order to get going and/or if trying to stop. If severe, the patient may be completely unable to walk and be confined to a wheelchair. The second common feature of NPH is impaired bladder control. Early on, the most common complaint is urgency - having to rush to the bathroom as soon as the urge is felt. Later in the disease, urinary incontinence may develop. Declining short -term memory is the third feature of NPH. The degree of forgetfulness is above that normally attributed to aging. If advanced, the patient can become quite demented which may make the diagnosis difficult to distinguish from Alzheimer's Disease. The above three findings are commonly referred to as the "clinical triad" of NPH: 1) Gait disorder, 2) urinary incontinence, and 3) dementia. In some cases, patients with NPH can present with signs and symptoms mimicking Parkinson's disease. It should be noted that NPH is in many ways very different from hydrocephalus that begins in childhood. The symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options are different for children, and therefore caution should be taken when reading about hydrocephalus in general at other sites.

Mediante ultrasonido, Approximately 50 to 60 percent of these fetuses have an associated CNS abnormality, with myelomeningocele composing 30 percent of this group. Sonographically, the hydrocephalus may be obscured on the side of the head closest to the ultrasound transducer and more obvious in the hemisphere distant from the transducer. This is known as an artifact. The prognosis of a fetus with hydrocephaly depends primarily on the presence and severity of associated abnormalities. Morbidity increases with the presence of abnormalities outside the CNS, and neurological prognosis depends on the presence of associated CNS abnormalities. Extensive counseling and amniocentesis are recommended in all cases of fetal hydrocephaly.

Diving With Hydrocephalus and Shunt Diving with hydrocephalus can be accomplished if several aspects of the problem are taken into account: 1. The extent of neurological disability; how much numbness of your extremities and whether or not there is any "autonomic" instability. This means things like postural hypotension, blood pressure changes and ability to react to cold water immersion. 2. All of the neurological deficits should be carefully documented so that a diving physician will have this information available in case of an accident. 3. If there is good circulation, a shunt should not be a problem since there is no air involved and there should be no pressure differentials from the changes in pressures of diving. 4. If there is an open wound you must be aware of the increased risk of infection from pathogens in the seawater. Dr. Nick McIver advises:
"There are two main shunt types and the risks when diving do differ. UKSDMC advise that the shunt should be fully functional There should have been no evidence of recent infection, and no detectable neurological deficit on examination. Ventriculo-peritoneal (V-P) shunts are considered less likely to cause problem when diving.

99. Hydrocephalus - Introduction To Hydrocephalus Presented By Insitute For Neurolog
Endoscopic and nonendoscopic techniques can be applied to this brain disorder.
http://nyneurosurgery.org/hydrointro.htm
Prior to the advent of computerized axial tomography (CAT scans), the prognosis for children with hydrocephalus was generally poor. It was believed that an abbreviated life span would be plagued by numerous shunt revisions and associated complications. There was little optimism concerning physical and intellectual well-being over the course of a lifetime; patients, families and physicians were exasperated by the many problems associated with the equipment available to manage the condition.
The CAT scan has changed this situation enormously. Most patients and families can now look forward to the likelihood of normal longevity with little or no intellectual or physical impairment. To assure this, however, the neurosurgeon must be highly experienced in treating hydrocephalus and must keep continually informed of advances in the understanding the condition and its treatment.
The following discussion will center on innovations in the treatment of hydrocephalus, and the problems that must be considered by the treating physicians, families, and the community.
