HYPOCHONDRIA By Ingvard Wilhelmsen, MD, Ph.D
What is hypochondria? A person with hypochondria is preoccupied with physical health and body. The diagnosis is used when a person during at least 6 months believes, fears or is convinced that he has a serious disease despite medical reassurance. This fear of disease or preoccupation with symptoms is unpleasant, interferes with the patient's daily life in a negative way and leads to medical examinations and/or treatment. The patient can only temporarily accept assurance that there is no physical explanation to his symptoms.
Is hypochondria a medical diagnosis? In common language hypochondriac indicates a person who «thinks he is ill» or merely «imagines that he has symptoms». However, hypochondria, or excessive health anxiety, is as serious as any other medical diagnosis. It has always been a part of the official medical diagnostic systems, and still is. Hypochondria must be "positively diagnosed", i.e. it is not enough to exclude physical disease, the exaggerated health anxiety must also be found. Hypochondria is as common in men as in women, and can be found in all age groups and social classes. What are typical symptoms in hypochondria?

Hypochondria
by Charles Wibbelsman, MD
If your teenager is complaining of colds, headaches, stomach aches and host of other complaints, do you find yourself wondering if he or she is becoming a hypochondriac? Are you jumping to rash conclusions? The fact is that the unique stresses of adolescence can indeed, make some teens appear to be hypochondriacs.
  • The physical and life changes in teenagers cause stress and heightened body awareness, so aches and pains are more likely to be noticed.
  • While a teenager is struggling for independence, there are times when he or she needs to feel taken care of again. Being sick is an OK way in a teen's mind to satisfy that craving inside for some loving care and attention.
  • Be aware of is that for teenagers, school and peers are more and more demanding. Illness can be a way for your teenager to get a "time-out" from these stresses.
  • A final avenue to explore is that changing feelings can be stressful and confusing. When they get bottled up, stress and stress-related symptoms occur. For you to effectively help in a situation such as this it is important that you see your teenager's pain as real, not imaginary, and encourage him or her to discuss the feelings behind the pain. Reassure him that his physical and emotional changes are normal. Help him to find ways to cope with tough situations at school. Most importantly, let your teen know that you are there to listen and to help.

Besides my daily symptoms I didn't know anything about Hypochondria.Until I started reading about it.For almost 2 years I was obsessing about diseases and death and didn't really know why.I thought I was "strange" or "over-sensitive" for having those weird thoughts for no good reason. But then I realized this was an actual illness and I wasn't alone.I've gathered all the information about Hypochondria I could find.Which wasn't really a lot but hopefully it can help you or someone you know recognize the problem.   This condition has several warning signs Studies show that between 6% and 10% of people visiting doctors may be suffering from hypochondria. These are the symptoms :
    • Frequent visits to the doctor.
    • Fixation on a disease that no doctor has diagnosed.
    • Rejection of a doctor's reassurance that there is nothing seriously wrong with you.
    • Continuous doctor-shopping.
    • Checking your body many times a day/week for peculiarities.
    • Preoccupation with an illness that you see on television or in the newspaper.
    • Excessive concern about fear or pain.

    Hypochondria
    Dr. Bertha L. Veronneau, D.D.,D.Sc.
Are we overly concerned for our health? To be overly concerned for the health of the physical self, and to imagine illness is considered hypochondria. There are degrees of hypochondria. The hypochondriac who has the greatest imagination, does not have the ills he/she supposes, but he/she is very ill, there may be a pressure in the cranium. The psychiatrist attempts to help you talk yourself out of it. Can the medical profession help in any way? At this writing, the tendency is to give the patient 'drugs' which suppress the feelings, but are not a cure. Most of us feel that it should not be necessary to give our bodies so much attention. For some, exercise helps. There is the body that physical exercise is not the right answer. If we develop a meditation to 'wake up' the physical body, the few moments spent each day in 'tuning up' may save you hours of discomfort. Photo courtesy: The Orchid Photo Page

Did you ever find yourself obssesing about deadly disease you might have? Check all over your body for unusual bumps, lumps, rashes and so on? Are you pre-occupied with thoughts of dying from AIDS, cancer, or a blood clot? Have these obssesive thoughts taken over your life, and sometimes make it almost impossible to function? Well, if you answer most of these question with a 'yes', you may suffer from Hypochondria. Hypochondria, also Health Anxiety is supposed to closely related to ODC, and Panic Disorder.
I have developed this disorder about 3 years ago after having a couple major Panic attacks. I found myself surfin' the web for information on Hypochondria, and realized that there wasn't a lot of info out there, so I dediced to create this site. The purpose is to show people that they're not crazy and most of all that they're not alone with this terrible disorder. Please check out the message board, share your experience and get the support you need.

I highly recommend the book 'Phantom Illness' by Carla Cantor. And for the lighter side of Hypochondria 'A Hypochondriacs Guide To Life And Death'.

Melancholy was a term that described a condition of deep sadness and lethargic behaviors leading to experiences of delusion and sometimes accompanied by a temptation to suicide (Midelfort 302). It reigned as one of the most common diseases of sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Europe and encouraged a great mass of literature that remains today a testimony to the extent of discontent in the human experience (145). Melancholy can easily be compared in contemporary terms to the mental illnesses defined as depression and manic depression and is considered by some to be a disease exclusively associated with sadness. Because of the widespread nature of the disease the term melancholy became generally applied to mental illnesses characterized by disturbances such as rage, anxiety, apathy or deep sadness (147). This led to the need for more accurate and reliable methods of diagnosis and separately defined symptoms and causes (221). The second type of melancholy, described as unnatural, was the result of a corruption from demons and spirits. The possession of an individual by such outside forces would lead to symptoms of sadness that in many cases graduated towards manic episodes and the other behaviors of rage and eventual absolute madness (154). This was considered in some instances when the patient could not be cured of the disease. In such circumstances the demonic possession was of such a nature that the spirits had taken their form in the manifestation of a disease with symptoms similar to that of melancholy. But as it was believed that the devil could create infinite disguises, it was assumed that the source of the ailments was not natural and must have come from without (386).
