Hypochondria
Author/s: Typically, hypochondriacs not only falsely believe that they have a serious disease (often, but not exclusively, of the heart or another internal organ), they persist in this belief even after being assured that they do not have the disease by a physician (or, usually, by many physicians). Hypochondriacs seem to have an increased sensitivity to internal sensations. It is also thought that serious childhood illness or experience with disease in a family member or friend may be associated with hypochondria, and that psychological stress in early adulthood related to disease or death may precipitate or worsen this condition.

Steve's Bio Ko Samui, Thailand By Steve Bond "It's my bladder," said the old man next to me, "it hurts when I pee." Why do pensioners feel the need to discuss their medical problems with complete strangers? Is it an attribute of old age that arrives with the pension? This man was a total stranger, yet there we were, sitting in a doctor's waiting room discussing the delicate nature of his plumbing. "What you here for?" He eventually asked. "Rabies," I answered. I couldn't blame him for looking surprised. The trouble began two weeks earlier. My girlfriend, Caroline, and I had just arrived in Ko Samui, a small tourist island in the Gulf of Thailand. The journey had been 14 hours of back breaking tedium and we arrived tired and hungry, prompting us to take the first hotel offered by a gang of persistent touts. The room was clean, the bed was large and the shower was a hosepipe. What more could you ask for? After a quick wash and a change of clothes we wandered over to the resort's beachside restaurant. Candles flickered, cicadas sung and waves broke - it was perfect. A smiling waitress shuttled back and forth with an endless supply of noodles and beer, while a shaggy beach dog sat at our feet begging for scraps.

Steve's Hypochondria Page
Here is a comprehensive list of recent complaints that effected me and my Honda, as well as a number that that effected my friends. July 3 Bad suburn on the left side of my back, from cycling north on the Pacific Coast Highway during the middle of the day. July 9 Montezouma's Revenge. I thought I had avoided eating anything that had been contaminated on my driving trip through northern Baja California with my buddy Zack "Iron Stomach" Orend, but apparently I was wrong. July 13 Big gouge on the back of my left thigh, when I fell into the bush next to the rock-climbing wall at LaJolla Shores. July 17 A strange rattling emminating from the bottom of my car. It seems to go away after it gets warmed up. I suspect it's a loose heat shield. July 23 Montezouma's Revenge II: Terror in Steve's Intestines. This I got by eating those tasty little tacos you get in Tijuana when I went with my buddy Zack. July 26 Strained Ligaments. I actually went to the doctor for this one. Because my bike was poorly conditioned, my chain slipped on a steep hill and I twisted my wrist on my handlebar. Aug. 10 My contacts hurt! I must have dried out my eyes on the plane to visit my parents on vacation in Canada. As of this writing at the end of September, my eyes still smart a little bit.

Have you ever had a headache that you swore occurred because you were getting sick? How about flu-like symptoms, until your doctor tells you that you have no bugs? What about cramps in your stomach, back pain and nausea, for no apparent reason, but you're sure that you've fallen ill? Well, psychiatrists are looking very closely at many case studies and have concluded that, most of the time, it's all in your head. The facts are that only 16% of patients that see their General Practitioners for common ailments actually have physiological causes for their sicknesses. The other 84% have no identifiable source for the ailment, and are usually told to take Tylenol or Aspirin. Doctors are also getting annoyed. Imagine when 84% of your daily patients turn out to be nothing more than

Health Correspondent - Every 2nd Saturday AskMen.com Specials Pages: Today's Articles < Previous Page break the vicious cycle That's exactly what it is; a vicious cycle. It starts with daily stresses in one's life. The stress alters a person's mood and attitude towards life in general. This change in mental perception causes ailments in the body related to the initial stress. These ailments can range anywhere from chronic rashes on the skin to migraines. The person starts to believe he is infected with some kind of bug, or even worse, has developed cancer or another life-threatening disease. This causes even more stress. The patient finally goes to see a doctor and is disappointed to hear that nothing is wrong with him (wouldn't you be happy?). He concludes that all doctors are wrong and that he's 100% certain that he is dying. More stress. More illness. So how can a person start to break free from this downward spiral into a living hell?

Available Now Description About the Author
"Susan Baur's book is a mixture of medical history, popular science and intelligent general reflection. Ms. Baur traces her story to antiquity, to Hippocrates and Galen, and brings it up to date with the findings of recent research; she moves easily between contemporary case histories and some of the great hypochondriacs of the past."John Gross, New York Times "An enjoyable, literate examination of how hypochondriacs come to be, how they maintain their condition, and how they have been viewed over the ages. Baur has examined the recent literature and has a good grasp of the historical underpinnings; she weaves this together into a tale that is far more entertaining than the standard popular medical primer." Kirkus Reviews "[Baur] draws on the experiences of a vast army of hypochondriacs past and present, known and unknown, to identify the condition and the consequences for the relationships the sufferer has with his or her surroundings. An excellent study for those on each side of the situation." Institute of Health Education "The best adjectives describing this work would be 'clear' and 'thorough'. . . . Anecdotes about the lives of Tolstoy, Darwin, and Boswell are fascinating and . . . illustrative of the roles of relationships and blame in hypochondriacs."T.L. Brink

What is Hypochondria?
Hypochondria is a condition where the person is so overly obsessed with their health that they begin to believe that they are sick with a serious ailment even after having a medical evaluation that proves otherwise. A person with this condition is typically called a hypochondriac. It's a very real condition that effects all genders and age groups equally. Diagnosis typically takes 6 months to determine and is usually made after the person has been checked completely and given a clean bill of health repeatedly, but yet continues to fear that they are sick. Symptoms of hypochondria are constant anxiety over minor aches and pains that are considered to be normal. The anxiety is over the person thinking the minor aches and pains are a serious life threatening illness even though there is nothing physically wrong with them. bodyOffer(23122) An example: A person with reoccurring headaches will think that the headache is being caused by a brain tumor. The doctors will do scans and tests but the person will still believe there is something wrong. They will either insist that the scans missed something, or that their headaches are caused by some other life threatening condition like a stroke. The person will then go through more tests and may even change doctors to have themselves reexamined because they are convinced that the headaches they are having are caused by something that is going to harm them. Treatment for hypochondria is a slow process that takes time. There are medications to help with the anxiety. Some people have lessened anxiety after finding out they aren't as sick as they thought and that they are just hypochondriacs. To some the news of finding their mystery illness as being an illness in itself to be somewhat of a relief yet not be cured. They will still need to go through therapy to overcome the anxiety disorder completely.
