Welcome
Welcome to the only Association in the world devoted to all forms of Hypoparathyroidism, a rare medical disorder. We have almost 700 members located in 33 countries as of April 2002. We are only available in English at this time, but hope to have the ability to translate all the information on this Web Site into one of several languages in the near future.
Our Mission
“The Hypoparathyroidism Association, Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with all forms of Hypoparathyroidism, a rare medical disorder, by maintaining a worldwide network of family support, and promoting public, as well as professional, awareness of this disorder through a quarterly newsletter and our Web Site. “The Hypoparathyroidism Association is set up to bring patients diagnosed with Hypoparathyroidism, their families, professional care givers, and other interested parties together for the purposes of 1) sharing common experiences; 2) offering support and comfort; 3) educating others about the disorder and how it affects lives; 4) serving as a support group, both formal and informal; and 5) putting people in touch with people for the foregoing purposes.”

HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
Too little parathyroid hormone production
Hypoparathyroidism is the combination of symptoms due to inadequate parathyroid hormone production. This is a VERY rare condition, and most commonly occurs because of damage or removal of parathyroid glands at the time of parathyroid or thyroid surgery. If this is the first parathyroid page you have read from our site, we strongly recommend that you read our introduction to the parathyroid gland first! Remember, hyperparathyroidism is much more common than hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is the state of decreased secretion or activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia) and increased levels of blood phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia). Symptoms can range from quite mild (tingling in the hands, fingers, and around the mouth) to more severe forms of muscle cramps leading all the way to tetany (severe muscle cramping of the entire body), and convulsions (this is very rare!). Parathyroid gland insufficiency is quite rare, but it can occur in several well defined ways. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is the loss of active parathyroid tissue following thyroid or parathyroid surgery. More rare is a defect present at birth (congenital) where a person is born without parathyroid glands. Occasionally, the specific cause of hypoparathyroidism cannot be determined.

Hypoparathyroidism What is hypoparathyroidism?
Hypoparathyroidism is caused by underactive parathyroid glands. Underactive parathyroid glands produce too little parathyroid hormones, which in turn causes low levels of calcium in the blood stream. The low levels of calcium lead to tetany, an increased excitability of the nerves. Causes of parathyroidism include accidental removal of a parathyroid gland when the thyroid is removed, or when part of the parathyroid tissue is removed. Other causes include absent parathyroid glands from birth or the sudden stop of functioning due to unknown reasons. What are symptoms of hypoparathyroidism? The following are the most common symptoms of hypoparathyroidism. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • uncontrollable, painful spasms of the face, hands, arms, and feet

Endocrine glands Definition Return to top a deficiency of parathyroid hormone that causes abnormal metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Calcium and phosphorus are important body minerals. They form the mineral component of bones, and they exist as charged particles called ions in the blood and inside cells. A hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus in bone and blood. Four small glands called parathyroid glands make PTH. The parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid gland in the neck.
Hypoparathyroidism is the clinical condition caused by a lack of parathyroid hormone. Calcium levels in the blood fall, and phosphorus levels rise. Low blood calcium levels may cause symptoms such as tingling of the lips, fingers and toes, and muscle cramps, or spasms. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is injury to the parathyroid glands during head and neck surgery.

Hypoparathyroidism:
- See: Action of Parathyroid Hormone - Discussion: pseudohypoparathyroidism is another cause of this disorder; - end organ unresponsiveness to parathyroid hormone; - patients tend to be short and may have short metacarpals (index, ring, little); - Laboratory Findings: - decreased plasma calcium; (see hypo Ca ) - in the disorder of pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, all of the clinical features of pseudoparathyroidism are present, but the serum calcium is normal; - increase in plasma phosphate; (see hyperphosphatemia ) - increase in renal tubualar reabsorption of phosphate - decrease in the number of bone remodeling centers; - Radiographs: - eventhough in hypoparathyroidism there are fewer "bites" taken out of bone by the remodeling centers, this causes very few abnormalities in bones in adults; - majority of these patients are treated w/ relatively high doses of Vit D to maintain their plasma Ca levels, which can, in itself, stimulate the bone remodely system; - subcutaneous calcifications may be present in pseudohypoparathyroidism , where as basal ganglia calcifications are seen in idiopathic hypoparathyroidism;

THYROID DISORDERS The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that lies over the trachea (windpipe) just below the larynx (see figure 21.17 ). The thyroid differs from other endocrine glands in that it requires an outside substance, iodine, to produce its hormone, thyroxine. Thyrotropin, a pituitary hormone, stimulates the thyroid to secrete thyroxine. A well-functioning thyroid requires a properly functioning pituitary, a small but steady supply of iodine, and, of course, normal pathways of hormone synthesis. Thyroid hormone affects virtually all metabolic processes; too much thyroid hormone speeds up metabolism while too little slows it down. In either instance, the disorder may be caused by an enlargement of the thyroid gland itself, known as goiter. In the past, iodine deficiency was the most common cause of thyroid disease, but today iodine is readily available, either from foods or in supplements added to salt in areas where foods are deficient in this mineral. OVERACTIVE THYROID (HYPERTHYROIDISM, GRAVES' DISEASE)
