The first number in this case, 140 is systolic blood pressure, the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart contracts; the second number in this case, 90 is the pressure between contractions. In most healthy people, blood pressure remains above 90/60 (or, 90 over 60). However, blood pressure varies from person to person; what is considered borderline low for one person may be normal for another. Chronic low blood pressure is almost never serious.
