Hypothyroid conditions affect millions of Americans. In fact, experts such as Dr. Chester Ridgway, the University of Colorado's chief endocrinologist, have stated that 70% of Americans are now hypothyroid. Hypothyroid conditions affect far more women than men Why, then, it is so difficult for the hypothyroid patient to obtain help? Most doctors rely solely upon the TSH test for diagnosing hypothyroid conditions. Yet, experience has shown that the TSH test is often inaccurate , even when the patient shows a complete range of hypothyroid symptoms.

“It Makes Sense…” I have managed to get into the Doctor's Manual, and I find the whole concept to be really a wonderful piece of work. It has actually served to clarify some of the deep mystery and dissatisfaction I have always felt about the thyroid system. Dr. Wilson's discovery of this syndrome will answer a lot of questions for a lot of physicians, I am sure.
Dr. Steven Ayre, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Chicago Medical School
Burr Ridge, IL
I have found that there are patients with Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome everywhere. I have found them in my own family practice that I was not previously aware of. I have known for many years that there was a patient with all the symptoms of hypothyroidism with normal lab tests. I could never explain it until Dr. Wilson's wonderful discovery. It now makes so much sense to me.

Saturated fat interferes with thyroid function
Saturated fat intake interferes with thyroid secretion, the transport of thyroid hormone in the blood, and the response of the tissue thyroid receptors. The more saturated the fat, the greater the effect.
Hypothyroidism keeps muscles tight
"An old and useful test of thyroid function uses the Achilles tendon reflex to observe the relaxation speed of the calf muscle. In hypothyroid states, the muscle is slow to relax, because the cells are slow to replace the energy used by the contraction-twitch. Because of the slow energy production, the muscles tend to fatigue easily, and to swell and feel sore with moderate exercise. In children, painful, swollen and tense muscles sometimes make it hard to go to sleep after an active day."

The author, DR. and Medical Ethicist, M. Sara Rosenthal, has done a superb job of researching and compiling accurate data for all thyroid patients, whatever the diagnosis. She has authored several books regarding medical matters and is a thyroid patient herself. She has dedicated many hours to all thyroid patients. We suggest you add these books to your library, read them, consult them and share their wisdom with fellow thyroid patients. The Hypothyroid Sourcebook is available through the Foundation. Hypothyroid
Hypothyroid is one of the most overlooked and under diagnosed conditions in modern medicine. If you have been diagnosed as hypothyroidism you know the problem all too well. The nagging fatigue and other vague symptoms that are too often overlooked or disregarded by your physician. If you think you might be hypothyroid and cannot get a proper diagnosis, here is some information that can help overcome the 'flaw in the diagnosis'. Your lab results may not indicate hypothyroid in themselves (specifically if your doctor only does TSH), and have to be taken as one part of the diagnosis. The other parts of the diagnosis are the basal temperature and the physical symptoms you have. Below are a list of symptoms and signs of hypothyroid function, and below that is a simple home test that can determine if you are hypo.
  • Fatigue Weakness Dry skin Slow speech Edema (swelling) Decreased sweating Cold shin Sensation of being cold Course dry hair Impaired memory Constipation Unexplained weight gain Loss of hair Labored breathing Hoarseness of voice Constipation Depression Elevated cholesterol Loss of libido (sex drive)
The above list is not all inclusive, just a sampling of the many symptoms that accompany low thyroid function.

Diary of a Hypothyroid 'Hound
by jody frederick n December 30, 1994, I adopted my very first dog, a 4 year-old retired racing lounge-hound (oops, I mean, GREYHOUND) named Duffy. To my very inexperienced eye, his physical condition and outward appearance when we picked him up was what I would describe as "poor." Duffy needed to gain only 5 pounds (but he looked emaciated to this greyhound neophyte), he had a bleeding tail-tip injury, and worst of all (again, to my untrained eye) was his massive hair loss. Both of Duffy's thighs were completely bald nearly to the knee-cap, his entire throat was bald, and his entire belly was also completely bald. I felt I had done my homework on retired track greyhoundsI read Cynthia Branigan's book, "Adopting the Racing Greyhound" from cover-to-cover, had exchanged many e-mail messages with other satisfied owners of ex-racers, and had met two ex-racers in real life. I understood that it was not uncommon for some baldness to be present in ex-track dogs. This is what Branigan described as "crate rub" and the hair loss is the result of the living conditions of the racing greyhound. I had assurances from several sources that, with time (as well as a soft bed), hair loss from crate rub slowly grows back once the greyhound is living in uncrated conditions. On April 15, at 4 o'clock in the morning, another seizure occurred. A crashing sound woke us up and we watched as Duffy's legs turned to rubber as he panted wildly. This one was much shorter, although the pattern was nearly identical to the first one. We began to keep a diary of all the things that had happened in the 24 hours prior to the seizure. We noted that we had cleaned Duffy's ears, brushed his teeth, given him a new chew-bone, had company over, and he had been de-wormed with Strongid T just one week before. We decided to wait it and watch very closely.

Background: Deficiency of thyroid hormone leads to a state called hypothyroidism. Common causes of hypothyroidism include the following:
  • Treatment with radioactive iodine 131 for Graves disease
  • Hashimoto disease - An autoimmune process in which lymphocytic infiltration and fibrous tissue accumulation cause replacement of normal thyroid tissue
  • Drug-induced hypothyroidism - Known to occur with amiodarone and iodine (ie, Wolff-Chaikoff effect)
  • Hereditary disorders of the iodothyronine synthesis pathway (T4 and T3)
  • Pituitary tumors and related surgical resections
Hypothyroidism can cause several symptoms, ranging from mild (eg, fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, mental slowing, muscle cramping) to severe (eg, heart enlargement, myxedema coma [rare]). Without regard to the cause of hypothyroidism, neuromuscular manifestations can be observed in many patients with hypothyroidism. These manifestations include peripheral nerve involvement and metabolic myopathy. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy, reported in 15-30% of all patients with hypothyroidism. CTS related to hypothyroidism usually occurs bilaterally. Sensory axonal polyneuropathy is reported in 19% of cases. Cranial nerve involvement with deafness and a hoarse voice due to vocal cord lesions also has been reported. Pathophysiology: Hypothyroidism causes a constellation of changes in the body. The lack of thyroid hormone results in slowed or reduced metabolic function, such as decreased protein turnover and impaired carbohydrate metabolism. These metabolic changes occur in many organ systems, including muscle. Pain with muscle exertion is characteristic of defective carbohydrate metabolism.

Question Posted By: Vicki on Thursday, July 22, 1999
Posted by Vicki on July 22, 1999 at 00:13:21 Lately I've felt like a hypocontriac, but am now wondering if the problem is hypothyroidism. My new Dr. said the TSH count in my file from my previous Dr. shows 5.23 with 5.5 being high enough to require medication. He feels the 5.23 may be high enough. He's delaying a T4 test (what is that anyway?) because I have a lump in my breast that's being dealth with. I'm almost embarrassed to tell him all these things that feel like they're wrong lately. Could all of this be sypmtoms of a hypothyroid condition: worsening vision (fairly dramatically)
weight gain
swelling hands and ankles
puffy face
listless
weakness difficulty putting sentences together at times mood swings shakiness headaches lasting all day I almost hope that is the problem, it sounds like it can be treated relatively easy! I'm not sick very often and rarely go to the Dr., so I'm really uncomfortable with all of this happening to me at once. They say life begins at 40, mine seems to be falling apart at 42!
