After that time the medical establishment discontinued its common use. We are now beginning to understand the impact HCL can have on a person's health. Numerous studies have shown that HCL secretion declines with advancing age Once the stomach senses food, it secretes the hormone gastrin into the blood. Gastrin affects digestion in two ways:
  • It stimulates the secretion of HCL It causes contraction of the muscles responsible for stomach motility
The gastric secretions in the stomach consist of protective mucus, pepsinogen, and HCl

Indigestion
(1st, 2nd, 3rd trimesters)
Indigestion is commonly called "heartburn." However, the condition has nothing have to do with the heart. Indigestion is a burning feeling that starts in the stomach and seems to rise into the throat. It occurs when digested food from your stomach, which contains acid, is pushed up toward your esophagus. Changes in your hormone levels during pregnancy slow digestion and relax the muscle that normally prevents the digested food and acid in your stomach from entering your esophagus. Also, your enlarged uterus is pressing on your stomach and this contributes to the symptoms. Tips to prevent or relieve indigestion:
  • eat 5 or 6 small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 large ones a glass of fluid may be equal in volume to a small meal, so avoid drinking large amounts of fluids with your meals avoid foods that cause gas, such as spicy or greasy foods avoid smoking, caffeine, chocolate, and alcohol do not eat or drink several hours before exercising antacids may be helpful ask your health care provider for a suggestion

What is Indigestion?
Indigestion, also known as upset stomach or dyspepsia, is discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen, often accompanied by nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting. Indigestion might be caused by a disease in the digestive tract, but for many people, it results from eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, using medications that irritate the stomach lining, being tired, and having ongoing stress can also cause indigestion or make it worse. Some people have persistent indigestion that is not related to any of these factors. This type of indigestioncalled functional or nonulcer dyspepsiamay be caused by a problem in the muscular squeezing action of the stomach (motility).

Take the "Burn" Out

Take the "Burn" out of Heartburn You're sleeping peacefully after a meal and suddenly it starts-the burning sensation in your chest and throat. Sometimes your symptoms include regurgitation and a sour taste, too. What's going on? You may be suffering from heartburn due to acid reflux. Here's what happens: As long as stomach acid stays in your stomach, it does no harm. But when the acid travels back up and comes into contact with the tender lining of your esophagus, it can create the burning sensation that is heartburn, or acid reflux. Try these tips to help keep stomach acid where it belongs Eat light. Overeating is a leading cause of heartburn, experts say. Large meals cause your stomach to secrete more acid, and all that acid can lead to heartburn. So eat less, and eat more slowly Stay slim. Some studies have shown that excess weight can cause the esophageal sphincter to work less effectively and at the same time increase the upward pressure of stomach acids. Watch out for problem foods.

Indigestion
Definition
Indigestion, which is sometimes called dyspepsia , is a general term covering a group of nonspecific symptoms in the digestive tract. It is often described as a feeling of fullness, bloating, nausea, heartburn , or gassy discomfort in the chest or abdomen. The symptoms develop during meals or shortly afterward. In most cases, indigestion is a minor problem that often clears up without professional treatment. Description
Indigestion or dyspepsia is a widespread condition, estimated to occur in 25% of the adult population of the United States. Most people with indigestion do not feel sick enough to see a doctor; nonetheless, it is a common reason for office visits. About 3% of visits to primary care doctors are for indigestion.
Physical causes
The symptoms associated with indigestion have a variety of possible physical causes, ranging from commonplace food items to serious systemic disorders:
  • Diet. Milk, milk products, alcoholic beverages, tea, and coffee cause indigestion in some people because they stimulate the stomach's production of acid. Medications. Certain prescription drugs as well as over-the- counter medications can irritate the stomach lining. These medications include

by Louise Davies Indigestion is a feeling of discomfort or pain within the lower chest or abdomen caused by gastric acid irritation within the upper part of the gut namely the oesophagus, stomach or duodenum. For other causes of abdominal pain see - "indigestion" . but the usual types of indigestion are:- Heart burn . A burning feeling in the center of the chest, sometimes combined with an acid taste in the back of the mouth. Usually made worse by eating a large meal, straining or leaning forward. This is caused by acid from the stomach refluxing back into the gullet. Classic indigestion comes on shortly after food and is a described as an intermittent burning discomfort in the top of the abdomen. Often helped temporarily by antacid medication (white medicine). Caused by irritation of the stomach wall (gastritis or an ulcer). If discomfort starts on an empty stomach (or starts in the middle of the night) it is more likely because of an ulcer or irritation of the section of gut which immediately follows the stomach called the duodenum. General points to remember:
  • Avoid tight fitting clothing (especially underwear, skirts or trousers)

In some cases, such as lactose intolerance , symptoms of indigestion are due to a specific cause that requires specific treatment. Sometimes symptoms associated with indigestion are caused by diseases unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract. For example, ovarian cancer may cause a sensation of bloating. Anyone with symptoms of indigestion should be properly diagnosed by a healthcare professional before assuming that the information below is applicable to their situation. The most common cause of heartburn is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), in which the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach is not functioning properly. Another, related cause of heartburn is hiatal hernia, in which a small portion of the stomach protrudes through the aforementioned sphincter.

http://www.aaessentials.com/advice/indigestion.html
Indigestion Indigestion (dyspepsia) is not a disease or a specific condition. It is a symptom of disorder of the upper part of the digestive system. The term is also used for any symptoms that are attributed, not necessarily correctly, to digestive upset. The term usually refers to discomfort in the upper abdomen, heartburn, a tendency to belching, nausea or a sense of bloated fullness (flatulence). A feature of indigestion is air swallowing (aerophagy). This is common in people with dyspepsia whose efforts to bring up wind often result in the swallowing of sufficient air to produce an eventual and satisfactory belch. Most cases of indigestion are caused by eating too rapidly, inadequate chewing (mastication), or fatty diets. Indigestion may be symptomatic of several diseases. These include: Inflammation of the gullet (oesophagitis).
