Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) What is polycystic kidney disease (PKD)?
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys. PKD cysts can slowly replace much of the mass of the kidneys, reducing kidney function and leading to kidney failure. PKD can also cause cysts in the liver and problems in other organs, such as the heart and blood vessels in the brain. PKD is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), about one-half of people with autosomal dominant PKD progress to kidney failure, or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). What are some of the types of PKD?

PKD cysts can slowly replace much of the mass of the kidneys, reducing kidney function and leading to kidney failure. PKD can also cause cysts in the liver and problems in other organs, such as the heart and blood vessels in the brain. The cysts may also cause pain or may get infected. There are two types of PKD ( autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive Types? Autosomal dominant PKD is inherited. This kind of PKD accounts for about 90 percent of all PKD cases. The term "Autosomal dominant" means that if one parent has the disease, there is a 50 percent chance that the disease will pass to a child. Autosomal recessive PKD is also inherited. This type of PKD is rare. Parents that do not have the disease can have a child with the disease. How can this happen? Ib both parents carry the recessive gene and pass the recessive gene to their child, the child will have two recessive genes and develop the disease.(inherited).

Kidney Cancer Treatment and Research
at the National Cancer Institute
Carcinoma of the kidney affects some 27,000 individuals in the United States each year. Until recently relatively little attention was paid to the genetics and histology of renal carcinomas. In the past 10 years major advances have been made in the understanding of the genetic basis of human kidney cancer. The National Cancer Institute has become a leading center for research on the genetic basis of kidney cancer. We created this Web page to detail the research (with the very latest described in the "What's New" page), as well as the members of the multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists at the National Cancer Institute who study and treat patients with kidney cancer. We wish to inform the public of the Familial Kidney Tumor Program based at the National Cancer Institute in the hopes of encouraging persons having more than one family member afflicted with kidney cancer to register their families.

69. Erectile Dysfunction
Fact sheet including illustrated information on the physiology of erection, causes of impotence, diagnosis, treatment and anticipated future treatment developments.
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/urolog/pubs/impotnce/impotnce.htm

Erectile dysfunction, sometimes called "impotence," is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. The word "impotence" may also be used to describe other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse and reproduction, such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation or orgasm. Using the term erectile dysfunction makes it clear that those other problems are not involved. In older men, ED usually has a physical cause, such as disease, injury, or side effects of drugs. Any disorder that causes injury to the nerves or impairs blood flow in the penis has the potential to cause ED. Incidence increases with age: About 5 percent of 40-year-old men and between 15 and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience ED. But it is not an inevitable part of aging. ED is treatable at any age, and awareness of this fact has been growing. More men have been seeking help and returning to normal sexual activity because of improved, successful treatments for ED. Urologists, who specialize in problems of the urinary tract, have traditionally treated ED; however, urologists accounted for only 25 percent of Viagra mentions in 1999.

70. Celiac Disease
Facts, provided by the NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and kidney Disorders).
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/digest/pubs/celiac/index.htm

What Is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. Specifically, tiny fingerlike protrusions, called villi, on the lining of the small intestine are lost. Nutrients from food are absorbed into the bloodstream through these villi. Without villi, a person becomes malnourishedregardless of the quantity of food eaten. Because the body's own immune system causes the damage, celiac disease is considered an autoimmune disorder. However, it is also classified as a disease of malabsorption because nutrients are not absorbed. Celiac disease is also known as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy. Celiac disease is a genetic disease, meaning that it runs in families. Sometimes the disease is triggeredor becomes active for the first timeafter surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection, or severe emotional stress.

Anatomy
Nephron Formation of Urine Urination ... Thirst
The kidneys are very important organs within the human body. They guard blood volume, filter the blood and form urine, regulate water, electrolyte and acid base balance, produce some small hormones and participate in the metabolism of others. At rest, an estimated 20% of cardiac output (~1000ml/minute) flows through the kidneys where it is filtered and reconditioned.
The kidneys have a major role in maintaining an internal environment that is compatible with life. These small organs must keep fluids, minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), and electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) in balance while excreting waste products in the urine. One of the main tasks is to keep an appropriate amount of water in the body. Approximately 50-70% of body weight is attributed to water. The water is distributed between two compartments, that which is inside the cells (~2/3rds) and that which is outside the cells (~1/3rd). The water outside of the cells is further divided between the blood and tissues . Tissue fluid and blood plasma contain about the same electrolyte composition but plasma contains a large amount of protein. All of these compartments are in balance with each other, so that changes in one eventually causes changes in the others. Abnormalities in fluid distribution (such as edema) are associated with some common

73. Kidney Directions: About End Stage Renal Disease
Site sponsored by Baxter Healthcare discusses end stage renal disease, acute kidney failure, and chronic kidney failure.
http://www.kidneydirections.com/us/patients/basics/kidneys/ext-end-stage-renal-d
When someone has end stage renal disease, the kidneys are damaged.
The kidneys no longer work well enough to remove wastes and excess fluids from the body. Complete kidney failure occurs when less than 10% of your kidneys are working. Toxins , waste products from foods and body cells, plus extra fluids build up in the blood. If the excess wastes and fluids are not removed, the whole body is affected. You will become ill from the build up of waste products and fluid. When the kidneys cannot work normally any longer, this is called kidney failure. When kidney failure progresses to the point where the kidneys do not function well enough to keep a person healthy, he or she will need treatment. A process called "dialysis" is used to replace some of the functions (waste and fluid removal) of the kidneys. Or, a patient may be a candidate for a kidney transplant, which is when a new kidney from a living or deceased donor replaces the patient's nonfunctioning kidney (patients usually receive dialysis while they are waiting for a donor kidney). Not all people with kidney failure are candidates for a transplant. Kidney failure can happen suddenly or slowly.

76. ESRD Treatment Choices
A discussion about hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation in the treatment of endstage renal disease.
http://cnpd.com/choices.htm
Today, there are new and better treatments for ESRD that replace the work of healthy kidneys. By learning about your treatment choices, you can work with your doctor to pick the one that's best for you and with the help of your health care team, family, and friends, you may be able to lead a full, active life. The following describes the choices for treatment: Dialysis
There are two forms of dialysis. They are Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.
Hemodialysis is a procedure that cleans and filters your blood. It rids your body of harmful wastes and extra salt and fluids. It also controls blood pressure and helps your body keep the proper balance of chemicals such as p otassium, sodium, and chloride.
Hemodialysis Dialysis
Hemodialysis uses a dialyzer, or special filter, to clean your blood. The dialyzer connects to a machine. During treatment, your blood travels through tubes into the dialyzer. The dialyzer filters out wastes and extra fluids. Then the newly cleaned blood flows through another set of tubes and back into your body.
Before your first treatment, an access to your bloodstream must be made. The access provides a way for blood to be carried from your body to the dialysis machine and then back into your body. The access can be internal (inside the body usually under your skin) or external (outside the body).
