Determinants of disability in patients with chronic renal failure
One in a series of evidence reports and technology assessments on significant clinical topics, developed by the Evidence-based Practice Program of the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This review addresses the issue of determinants of disability in individuals with chronic renal failure (CRF). Kidney failure happens when your kidneys lose their ability to function. If your kidneys fail, you face an immediate life-threatening condition. The kidneys are not able to release enough hormones that maintain blood pressure, the production of red blood cells and Vitamin D. The following may occur:
  • Your blood pressure rises. This may lead to further complications like stroke, heart disease or even death. Your body fails to produce enough red blood cells, which can cause anaemia. Your bones may become weak due to loss of calcium
In addition, your body retains fluid and waste and toxins build up. When toxic wastes build up in the blood, they may cause permanent and irreversible damage to body cells. In order to survive, kidney function needs to be replaced either through dialysis or transplantation.

For people who develop kidney disease, but still retain some function in their kidneys, here are some useful information which may help you make choices for the future. What can I do to retard kidney disease progression? If you are at high risk , heed the precautions advised for your condition. For instance, if you have hypertension, control your blood pressure by eating right, among other things. Visiting your doctor regularly will help your doctor determine whether you are showing signs of kidney disease. If signs are present and kidney disease was confirmed, steps will be made to slow down the progression of the disease. Tips to slow down kidney disease progression: 1. Follow the advice of your doctor.
2. Stay positive.

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Unlike acute renal failure with its sudden reversible failure of kidney function, chronic renal failure is slowly progressive. It most often results from any disease that causes gradual loss of kidney function. It can range from mild dysfunction to severe kidney failure . Progression may continue to end-stage renal disease . Chronic renal failure usually occurs over a number of years as the internal structures of the kidney are slowly damaged. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. In fact, progression may be so gradual that symptoms do not occur until kidney function is less than one-tenth of normal.
Chronic renal failure and end stage renal disease (ESRD) affect more than 2 out of 1000 people in the United States. Diabetes and hypertension are the two commonest causes and account for approximately two thirds of the cases of chronic renal failure and ESRD. Other major causes include

Ask an Attorney The human body contains two kidneys, each of which process waste before it is sent to the bladder as urine. When a kidney "fails" it becomes unable to properly process this waste. Kidney failure is also referred to as "renal failure." Depending on the severity of the failure, a patient may have to undergo dialysis , a procedure that takes the blood out of the body and sends it into a dialysis machine. The machine, in lieu of the kidney, filters the waste products from the blood. Severe cases of renal failure may require a kidney transplant. The popular cholesterol lowering drug Baycol has been linked to rhabdomyolysis , a potentially fatal condition which causes muscle pain and kidney failure in severe cases. Baycol was removed from the market on August 8, 2001.

    Kidney Failure
If you, or someone you know, was diagnosed with kidney failure and was taking Baycol® , please contact us after you read this informational summary. Baycol® was a “statin” believed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels by blocking a certain liver enzyme. Unlike most other statins which are organically produced from fungus, Baycol® was synthetically derived, metabolized differently from, and was more potent than, other statins. It was approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 1997 for 0.3mg a day.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced in the liver which plays a role in maintaining cell membranes and building certain hormones. LDL is the “bad cholesterol” because it travels through the body and leaves deposits in the vascular system. HDL is the “good cholesterol” as it is believed to be able to collect the deposits left by the LDL and return them to the liver.
If you or someone you know has experienced any of these symptoms, please contact us now!

Unfortunately for patients, Baycol® was not effective at the approved dose. Even though by January 2000, Bayer had knowledge of rhabdomyolysis causing death and kidney failure from Baycol® , it nevertheless sought approval of yet a higher dosage of the drug. All this time, the dangerous side effects were being reported to Bayer. Rhabdomyolysis is a muscle breakdown disorder. The muscle components are released into the blood circulation and detectable as an elevated CK level, usually five times higher than normal. Symptoms can include fatigue, fever, nausea and vomiting, muscle pain weakness and tenderness so severe they prevent individuals from walking or functioning as before. The muscle pains are most often in the lower back and calves.

    Baycol and Kidney Failure
Studies have found a link between use of Baycol and kidney failure sometimes requiring dialysis or even causing death. Baycol has been linked to over 480 cases of rhabdomyolysis, a condition that causes muscle-cell breakdown (atrophy). Symptoms of rhabdo include muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, malaise, fever, dark urine, nausea, and vomiting. In addition to kidney failure, rhabdo may be linked to heart conditions, including cardiac arrest. The dangerous side effects of Baycol were even higher when it was taken in conjunction with Lopid (Gemfibrozil). In fact, over 84 deaths have been linked to Baycol.
After these tragic injuries were widely reported, Bayer, the manufacturer of Baycol (Lipobay) withdrew the drug from the market. Now, Bayer has begun to settle some cases involving serious injuries.

Kidney failure is a serious disease which can have a major impact on life, and can ultimately be fatal. However, it can be successfully treated. What do the kidneys do? In order for blood to perform its essential functions of bringing nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body, and carrying waste materials away from those cells, the chemical composition of the blood must be carefully controlled. The kidneys play a crucial role in this process by filtering the blood under high pressure and removing potential toxins, which are excreted from the body in the urine. Every day the kidneys filter the body's entire blood volume seven or eight times. What is kidney failure? When the kidneys start to fail, toxins are not filtered out of the blood, and start accumulate in the tissues. This can lead to a range of problems. Build up of two waste products, urea and creatinine, can lead to tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite and vomiting.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The kidneys filter wastes and excrete fluid when the pressure of blood in the bloodstream forces blood through the internal structures of the kidney. Because of its function as a filter, there are numerous potential causes of damage to this organ.
Decreased blood flow is one cause of kidney damage. This may occur when there is extremely low blood pressure from trauma, complicated surgery, septic shock , hemorrhage, burns and associated dehydration , or other severe or complicated illnesses.

Over-exposure to metals, solvents, radiographic contrast materials, certain antibiotics and other medications or substances can also cause acute kidney failure.
