In many patients, this condition eventually becomes end-stage kidney disease, requiring dialysis and/or kidney transplant. Currently, there are 350,000 Americans undergoing kidney dialysis or having kidney transplant operations. The number of new patients annually with this end-stage of kidney disease is approximately 150-200 people per million Americans. The leading causes of chronic kidney failure are diabetes mellitus, hypertension (high blood pressure), various forms of nephritis (kidney inflammation or infection) and polycystic kidney disease. Who is at risk to develop chronic kidney failure?

KIDNEY FAILURE, DIALYSIS, AND TRANSPLANTATION by Ed Bryant Photo: portrait of Ed Bryant I have a special interest in renal failure, as I have had a kidney transplant for more than 13 years, and I feel great. I know folks who've had transplants far longer than I have, and they're doing fine, too. I hope the following answers some questions. Many long-term diabetics face the prospect of kidney failure, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). For them, there are three options for treatment. In hemodialysis, the patient's circulatory system is temporarily linked with a machine that performs the blood-cleansing functions of the human kidney. In peritoneal dialysis (CAPD or CCPD) a tube is inserted into the patient's peritoneal cavity, allowing urine and unneeded fluids to periodically drain from the body. The third option is kidney transplantation, in which a donated kidney is surgically implanted into the patient's body. How is kidney failure measured? Several tests measure creatinine, a waste product from muscle mass. Although everyone produces creatinine, people whose kidneys are failing cannot properly excrete it. One test measures the amount of creatinine in the blood, and the other is "creatinine clearance," a 24-hour urine test. Normal "blood creatinine," for someone with healthy kidneys, is about 0.7 to 1.3. Government guidelines (April 1995) recommend dialysis when the blood creatinine reaches 6 or above. However, some diabetics will experience kidney failure before that point. There is much variation between individuals, and the actual range is from 3 through 8but at or above 6, Medicare will pay for dialysis.

I know folks who've had transplants far longer than I have, and they're doing fine, too. I hope the following answers some questions. Prevention Comes First "I'm sorry, but your kidneys are beginning to fail..." If you hear those words, what do you do next? Knowing that nephropathy, kidney failure, is a frequent complication of diabetes, do you sit and wait to get worse, or do you act? What can YOU do to prevent, minimize, or slow kidney failure? There are other things you can do to cut the risk. Some of them come under the heading of "healthy lifestyle." First, don't smoke. Nicotine, the narcotic active ingredient in tobacco, is a vasoconstrictor, raising blood pressure, stiffening capillaries, and making it harder for the kidneys to filter wastes. Urinary tract infections need prompt treatment, to limit the damage they can do to already strained kidneys. Tell your doctor promptly, if you think you have such an infection.

Kidney Failure - A Basic Explanation Baycol Kidney
Disease?
Kidney Failure or Renal Failure (the word "renal" simply refers to the kidneys) means the loss of function of the kidneys. There are different types of kidney failure:
  • Acute renal failure is the sudden and temporary loss of kidney function. Although acute renal failure is potentially life-threatening and may require intensive treatment, it usually reverses within a few weeks to a few months after the underlying cause has been treated. Approximately 16-33% of rhabdomyolysis patients suffer from acute renal failure, according to eMedicine.com Chronic renal failure is the gradual and progressive loss of kidney function. Renal failure - end stage (also called end-stage renal disease) occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to function at a level that is necessary for day to day life. It usually occurs as chronic renal failure progresses to the point where kidney function is less than 10% of baseline. At this point, the kidney function is so low that without dialysis or kidney transplantation, complications are multiple and severe, and death will occur from accumulation of fluids and waste products in the body.

Kidney failure simply means that your kidney have stopped functioning. When your kidney does not work, your body cannot control the amount of fluid buildup and toxins in your body. What Causes Damage To Your Kidneys ? The kidneys can be damaged in an accident (physical trauma) or by disease. The most common cases of kidney failure are from the complications of uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure. Additionally, overuse of over the counter drugs such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc) can cause kidney damage. Symptoms Of Kidney Failure The patient suffers from tiredness and fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, swelling of the legs and breathlessness. The patients' health will deteriorate tremendously resulting in difficulty for the patient to carry out his or her normal work or duties. Seeking Treatment Those who do not seek treatment can expect the worst to come. And for those who seek treatment, they will have to face hefty bills and financial difficulty as the treatment costs are expensive. Thus for those who cannot afford the treatment, their predicament is even greater. Charges for haemodialysis treatment at private set-ups range from RM140 to RM 240 per dialysis session. A patient will require 13 dialysis treatment per month and based on the above charges, will have to fork out between RM1820 to RM5460 a month. thus patients in the lower income group is not able to afford the expensive treatment.

    Kidney Failure
The kidneys are organs located on either side of the spine, just below the rib cage. The body depends on the kidneys for several life-sustaining functions: the removal of waste products, red blood cell production, regulation of blood pressure and the control of the body's chemical and fluid balance. Kidney failure is determined when the kidneys can no longer perform the necessary functions successfully. With a significant disruption in the function of the kidneys, your child may be diagnosed with acute/short term (days to several months) or chronic/long term (permanent) kidney failure.
    Cause
Kidney failure occurs as a result of several different conditions or diseases. The causes range from the followingsevere infections, burns, poisonings, allergic reaction to medicine, obstruction (such as kidney stones, tumors or cysts), high blood pressure, or other disorders such as polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephrosis, nephrosis and other kidney diseases.
    Symptoms
The symptoms of kidney failure are known as uremia. Uremia results when the kidneys are so diseased or damaged from injury that they no longer can clear waste products from the blood. The symptoms from kidney failure include the following:

    Definition

    Description
Causes and symptoms Diagnosis ... Resources Definition Acute kidney failure occurs when illness, infection, or injury damages the kidneys. Temporarily, the kidneys cannot adequately remove fluids and wastes from the body or maintain the proper level of certain kidney-regulated chemicals in the bloodstream. Description The kidneys are the body's natural filtration system. They perform the critical task of processing approximately 200 quarts of fluid in the bloodstream every 24 hours. Waste products like urea and toxins, along with excess fluids, are removed from the bloodstream in the form of urine. Kidney (or renal) failure occurs when kidney functioning becomes impaired. Fluids and toxins begin to accumulate in the bloodstream. As fluids build up in the bloodstream, the patient with acute kidney failure may become puffy and swollen (edematous) in the face, hands, and feet. Their blood pressure typically begins to rise, and they may experience fatigue and nausea. Unlike chronic kidney failure, which is long term and irreversible, acute kidney failure is a temporary condition. With proper and timely treatment, it can typically be reversed. Often there is no permanent damage to the kidneys. Acute kidney failure appears most frequently as a complication of serious illness, like heart failure, liver failure, dehydration, severe burns, and excessive bleeding (hemorrhage). It may also be caused by an obstruction to the urinary tract or as a direct result of kidney disease, injury, or an adverse reaction to a medicine.

It most often results from some disease that causes gradual destruction of the kidneys and can range from mild dysfunction to severe kidney failure . Progression may continue to end-stage renal disease. Chronic renal failure usually occurs over a number of years as the internal structures of the kidney are slowly destroyed. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. Progression may be so gradual that symptoms do not occur until kidney function is less than one-tenth of normal. Chronic renal failure occurs in approximately 2 out of every 10,000 people. Causative diseases include glomerulonephritis of any type (one of the most common causes), polycystic kidney disease, hypertension Alport syndrome reflux nephropathy , obstruction, kidney stones , infection, and analgesic toxicity.

    http://www.healthypet.com/Library/illness-14.html
    Illness and Disease:
    Kidney Failure
What is kidney failure? Kidney failure, also known as renal failure, results from the inability of the kidneys to function properly. When they are healthy, kidneys perform several functions, including removing the waste products of metabolism from your pet’s blood, regulating the volume and composition of body fluids, producing hormones that stimulate production of red blood cells, and controlling blood pressure. Once the kidneys do their job, the by-products produced as a result of the metabolic process are excreted in the form of urine. There are two kinds of kidney failure. The first is known as chronic kidney failure, which occurs when the kidneys can no longer perform the crucial functions of excreting waste products, producing hormones, and regulating the chemical composition of body fluids. In this case, kidney function decreases slowly over a long period of time, which means the physical signs may appear gradually. The second type is known as acute kidney failure. It is characterized by an abrupt decline in kidney function that leads to changes in body chemistry, including alterations in fluid and mineral balances. These changes negatively affect almost every system in the body. The physical signs are more dramatic with acute kidney failure because kidney function declines quickly.
