Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the need for excessive amounts of sleep (hypersomnolence), (i.e., up to 20 hours a day); excessive food intake (compulsive hyperphagia); and an abnormally uninhibited sexual drive. The disorder primarily affects adolescent males. When awake, affected individuals may exhibit irritability, lack of energy (lethargy), and/or lack of emotions (apathy). They may also appear confused (disoriented) and experience hallucinations. Symptoms of Kleine-Levin Syndrome are cyclical. An affected individual may go for weeks or months without experiencing symptoms. When present, symptoms may persist for days to weeks. In most cases, the symptoms associated with Kleine-Levin Syndrome eventually disappear with advancing age. The exact cause of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is not known. However, researchers believe that in some cases, the disorder may be inherited as an autosomal dominant genetic trait. It is thought that symptoms of Kleine-Levin Syndrome may be related to malfunction of the portion of the brain that helps to regulate functions such as sleep, appetite, and body temperature (hypothalamus).
This is a general definition from the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc.(NORD).

Welcome to the Kleine-Levin Syndrome Foundation, Inc. Website
Mission Statement
The Kleine-Levin Syndrome Foundation, Inc. has been created to provide information and educational resources for those persons with Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), to provide support to the family and friends of those persons with Kleine-Levin Syndrome and to provide resources to the medical community to explore causes and cures of this syndrome.
History
The website was first developed in 1998 by Cindy and Dick Maier and their son Stephen who has KLS. It began as a way for their family to find just one other person with KLS and evolved into a support group when they discovered that there were as many as 100 other people afflicted with KLS. In 1999 they decided to incorporate as a non-profit organization designed to help others with KLS and to try to find the causes and cure for KLS.

The patient becomes progressively more drowsy and sleeps for most of the day and night, (hypersomnolence), and in some cases requires excessive food intake (compulsive hyperphagia). The disorder primarily strikes adolescents. When awake, affected individuals may exhibit irritability, lack of energy (lethargy), lack of emotions (apathy) and they

Definition of Kleine-Levin Syndrome
This edited definition of Kleine-Levin Syndrome was obtained from the Rare Disease Database of the National Organization of Rare Diseases (NORD). Be aware that not everyone fits neatly into this definition. It is just a general definition. Medication Management It is important to remember that only a handful of doctors in the world have ever seen a patient with KLS. Therefore, it is likely that your doctor is getting his information from the currently available information, which may not always be accurate. This is due to the limited number of patients studied and the limited length of these studies. KLS episodes can be separated by many months. Therefore a doctor can prescribe a medication to a patient, who then does not have an episode for a number of months. This doctor assumes that he has cured the patient and publishes a paper to that effect. Unfortunately, if the patient continues to have episodes after the paper is published, the article is still taken as fact causing more patients to be put on a drug that is ineffective. The Sleeping Princess
In the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, a princess pricks her finger with the needle of a spinning wheel and falls asleep for one hundred years. Recently, Taryn Sardis , a seventeen-year-old high school student, experienced a similar experience in 1997. She fell asleep for ten days, and it was impossible to awaken her. No spinning wheel was involved, however. The culprit, in Taryn's case, was a rare disorder called Kleine-Levin syndrome. Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder that causes excessive sleep or hypersomolance. It also causes compulsive eating, and an abnormal sex drive. It seems to be most prevalent among teenagers. However, once someone contracts the disorder, it doesn't necessarily end with the end of the teens. The malady may occur off and on throughout adult life. An article from the University of Amsterdam, in Holland, reports that two boys, just entering their teens, became victims of Kleine-Levin after an attack of a viral illness. Because the syndrome is rare, and very few cases have been studied, the cause isn't known. It has responded favorably to treatment with various amphetamines and other drugs.

Sleep and Your 4-7 Month Old

By this age, you and your baby should be well on the way toward an established sleep pattern. Most likely the pattern includes at least two naps a day and at least seven or eight hours at the longest stretch of nighttime sleep. Sleep Problems
Children often have sleep problems during the first year of life, including trouble getting to sleep, waking up in the middle of the night and having irregular sleep patterns. Why Kids Need Sleep Believe it or not, sleep is a big deal and it's important to get it even when you don't feel tired. Periodic Limb Movement in Juvenile Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia has been recently recognized in children and adolescents as juvenile fibromyalgia (JF). In adult fibromyalgia, subjective complaints of nonrestorative sleep and fatigue are supported by altered polysomnographic findings including a primary sleep disorder known as periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) in some subjects.
