The main symptom is a hoarse voice. Symptoms range from mild to complete loss of voice. There may also be some pain in speaking or swallowing. The causes include infection, overuse of the voice, inhaling smoke or fumes, or a tumor in the throat. A common cold or flu can sometimes spread to the vocal cords. Other infections include tuberculosis, bronchitis, or sinusitis. Viruses that tend to cause croup in children may cause laryngitis in adults. Excessive use of the voice is common in certain jobs, such as teaching or public speaking. It can also result from cheering at sports events, singing, or shouting. The first indication that you have laryngitis is that you lose your voice. Causes Anything that makes your vocal cords swell can result in laryngitis. Viruses and bacteria are frequently responsible. Allergies and exposure to certain harsh chemicals or toxins can also cause the vocal cords to swell. As well as overuse. Tumours or growths can also cause this, however it is only in rare case. Traditional Treatment Viral laryngitis usually goes away by itself in a few days without any treatment except rest for the voice. However, if your physician diagnoses a bacterial infection has set in, you'll most likely be given antibiotics. Be sure to complete the entire course. For most allergies, doctors usually prescribe antihistamines, which reduce swelling and inflammation.

Description Laryngitis is an infection or irritation of the larynx (voice box). Most often, laryngitis happens when a virus infects the area around the vocal cords. In most adults and older children, the result is just a hoarse voice and a sore throat. In infants and younger children, however, laryngitis sometimes further narrows an already small airway and leads to breathing problems. In babies, croup can also occur, most likely when a virus that causes laryngitis spreads to the trachea (windpipe) and larger breathing passages.
Most cases are caused by parainfluenza viruses types 1 and 2, and influenza A viruses are responsible for 75% of cases. Epiglottitis is a severe case of supraglottic laryngitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Type B.
In very rare cases, laryngitis is caused by

    Lost your voice?
    Let's Explore Laryngitis
Illnesses and diseases are often (and perhaps always) physical manifestations of disturbances in our emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies. When there is an imbalance in our being and we do nothing to bring ourselves back in balance.....we get physically sick. "being" meaning the whole of our being....not just our physical shell I telephoned a friend of mine a few days ago and when she picked up the phone on her end I could barely distinguish her raspy whispers. The doctor diagnosed her as having a sinus infection and immediately prescribed her some antibiotics. Although the antibiotics will likely address her physical ailment to bring about a healing, it will only be a partial healing if she isn't willing to get in touch with the underlying issues effecting her whole self. This friend has been dealing with a lot of anger in her life recently. She has been having difficulty "voicing" her needs and desires in her personal relationships. It is no wonder that she literally lost her voice when in reality she already had lost her voice in stating her truth. Basically she is just plain mad right now. She realizes she is full of pent-up anger.....and she simmering hot......

laryngitis By Adam Brochert, MD Images (click to view larger image) Laryngitis is a general term for inflammation of the voice box, or larynx. It can be caused by many different conditions. The larynx is a tube-like structure that connects the back of the throat to the windpipes. It contains the vocal cords, which help us to talk. What is going on in the body? The larynx and vocal cords become inflamed, reducing their ability to function, limiting the ability to talk, and possibly causing pain. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? Symptoms of laryngitis are: hoarseness or loss of the voice sore throat slight fever sensation of a lump in the throat persistent dry cough What are the causes and risks of the condition? The many causes of laryngitis include: infection overuse of the voice, such as doing a lot of yelling and screaming inhalation of smoke or fumes excess alcohol consumption damage to the nerves that supply the vocal cords, known as laryngeal nerve damage cancer trauma or injury to the neck or vocal cords, including from smoking severe gastroesophageal reflux or GERD What can be done to prevent the condition?

Causes Yelling, singing or speaking for a long time, or a cold are some of the causes of hoarseness and laryngitis. The end result is an inflammation of the larynx or the muscles in or around it, which interferes with proper functioning of the vocal cords. Yelling or speaking may cause a spasm of one of the vocal cords which will cause the voice to become deep and raspy. Hoarseness is the next step in the progression. Treating the parathyroid glands and any phosphorus/calcium imbalance will often correct this problem. The parathyroid glands produce a hormone that helps regulate the calcium levels in your blood. Without going into too much detail here, if there is too much phosphorus in your body, the parathyroid hormone causes a release of calcium from your bones in an attempt to balance the two minerals. Smoking is a major cause of hoarseness. Smoke irritates the mucous membranes and vocal cords. Dust and strong vapors are additional possibilities. A cold may give you laryngitis, which sometimes prevents you from speaking at all. Avoid raising your voice to be heard, for instance to overcome outside noise, traffic, kids yelling, etc., as your voice isn't accustomed to it.

    Definition
Laryngitis is caused by inflammation of the larynx, resulting in hoarseness of the voice. Description When air is breathed in (inspired), it passes through the nose and the nasopharynx or through the mouth and the oropharynx. These are both connected to the larynx, a tube made of cartilage. The vocal cords, responsible for setting up the vibrations necessary for speech, are located within the larynx. The air continues down the larynx to the trachea. The trachea then splits into two branches, the left and right bronchi (bronchial tubes). These bronchi branch into smaller air tubes which run within the lungs, leading to the small air sacs of the lungs (alveoli). Either food, liquid, or air may be taken in through the mouth. While air goes into the larynx and the respiratory system, food and liquid are directed into the tube leading to the stomach, the esophagus. Because food or liquid in the bronchial tubes or lungs could cause a blockage or lead to an infection, the airway must be protected. The epiglottis is a leaf-like piece of cartilage extending upwards from the larynx. The epiglottis can close down over the larynx when someone is eating or drinking, preventing these substances from entering the airway. In laryngitis, the tissues below the level of the epiglottis are swollen and inflamed. This causes swelling around the area of the vocal cords, so that they cannot vibrate normally. A hoarse sound to the voice is very characteristic of laryngitis. Laryngitis is a very common problem, and often occurs during the course of an upper respiratory tract infection (cold).
