Scroll down for more information. It truly comforts us to be able to share our son Ryan with individuals who never met him, knowing that what they will see and read embodies much of who he was on this earth. God's grace is sufficient, and it has been evident from the very beginning of Ryan's illness through today. We intend to continue sharing Ryan's testimony for as long as possible. Our prayer is that the individuals who see, read or hear it will come to better understand and know His everlasting love for us. Ryan has touched so many lives and has the potential to touch many more through his testimony. Ryan's story is not one about loss. It is a testimony that will endure as an affirmation of faith, hope and life! God does not waste pain ... or experiences!

Leukemias
Leukemia develops when a white blood cell undergoes a transformation into a malignant cell one capable of uncontrolled growth. Leukemias are evenly split between the acute and chronic forms, but among children one form acute lymphocytic leukemia accounts for about two-thirds of cases. Acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia are the most common forms in adults.
Experts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering see about 500 new patients with leukemia each year, and receive about 20,000 inpatient and outpatient leukemia patient visits annually. Overview Leukemia is cancer that originates in the bone marrow, the soft, spongy inner portion of certain bones, and in which the malignant cells are white blood cells.

Leukemia - which literally means "white blood" in Greek - occurs when there is an excess of abnormal white blood cells in the blood. Known as leukocytes, these cells are so plentiful in some individuals that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. Under normal circumstances, the blood-forming, or hematopoietic, cells of the bone marrow make leukocytes to defend the body against infectious organisms such as viruses and bacteria. But if some leukocytes are damaged and remain in an immature form, they become poor infection fighters that multiply excessively and do not die off as they should.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a malignancy that arises in lymphocytes, white blood cells that battle infectious agents throughout the body. In this section you can find up-to-date information about this form of leukemia, and learn about Memorial Sloan-Kettering's expertise in caring for patients with this disease.
Overview
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is one of the most common forms of leukemia in adults. Risk Factors Scientists know that most leukemias are associated with specific gene mutations, but, in most cases, it is not clear what causes those mutations. Symptoms In the early stages of CLL, patients may not have any symptoms of disease; this phase may last for several years. Diagnosis Physicians perform an array of tests to help diagnose leukemia and determine its type and specific subtype.

Introduction.
Welcome and thank you for visiting my web page. My name is Michael Cook , and I am a survivor of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I was diagnosed in 1995 when I was 21 years old. I was treated at University of California San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center with chemotherapy, some surgeries, a short while on dialysis, and radiation. If you are a patient of, or know someone who is a patient of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease, or multiple myeloma, then this web site may be of some benefit to you. My intention for building this web site is to provide supplemental information by listing links to other web sites dealing with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins Disease, NHL, and a few other blood disorders and metabolism disorders. Also included are links to personal accounts from survivors, bone marrow programs, pain management, side effects, benefits and fund raisers, support groups, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, nutrition, glossaries, pharmaceuticals, and cancer treatment facilities.

If You Have Just Been Diagnosed
...
Snow in Waikiki?

A personal story...
It was around 11:00 P.M. Friday night, and we were settling into what had recently become our usual night ritual. Robert, my 5-year-old son, was sound asleep on the sofa. My wife, Joan, was sitting by his bedside reading Mark a story. And Mark, my 4-year-old, was fighting sleep in his hospital bed by challenging his mother on any word that she might skip in the storybook which he had totally memorized. Despite the fact that Mark's current medication regiment included Morphine, Codeine, Benadryl, Alcohol, and many, many more pain medications, all being administered intravenously and simultaneously, he still was in a considerable amount of pain and discomfort, yet somehow alert at the same time.
Looking at Mark's condition now and seeing how much he had deteriorated, it was hard to believe how casually my wife and I had acknowledged his need to be hospitalized just two short months prior. I remember that sunny warm Texas July Saturday well. We were planning a small dinner party with some close friends. While my wife was prepping the food, I nonchalantly mentioned that the small blister on Mark's foot was still not healing. "If anything," I said, 'it seems to be getting worse." We kind of mutually agreed that I should take him to the hospital and see if the doctors could prescribe anything. If either of us had anticipated that he was going to be hospitalized, we would have both went. We never left Mark alone in the hospital.
