Division of Control of Tropical Diseases
Approximately 300 million people worldwide are affected by malaria and between 1 and 1.5 million people die from it every year. Previously extremely widespread, the malaria is now mainly confined to Africa, Asia and Latin America. The problems of controlling malaria in these countries are aggravated by inadequate health structures and poor socioeconomic conditions. The situation has become even more complex over the last few years with the increase in resistance to the drugs normally used to combat the parasite that causes the disease. Malaria is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium Four species of Plasmodium can produce the disease in its various forms:
  • Plasmodium falciparum
  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Plasmodium malaria
P. falciparum is the most widespread and dangerous of the four: untreated it can lead to fatal cerebral malaria. Malaria parasites are transmitted from one person to another by the female anopheline mosquito. The males do not transmit the disease as they feed only on plant juices. There are about 380 species of anopheline mosquito, but only 60 or so are able to transmit the parasite.

Malaria, beetles, worms it's another Cahill vacation

    PASS THE BUTTERWORMS
    Tim Cahill
    (Villard)
I think the malaria would have put me over the edge. Or perhaps I would have cracked after chowing down on fried beetle larvae (crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside) in the remote Indonesian jungle. And don't forget the close call with that apartment-sized slab of ice at Glacier Bay. Crazy stuff. But Tim Cahill survives, thrives and carries on travelling, that is.
Cahill, who makes his home in Montana, has been writing travelogues for the last 20 years. The adventures of this self-described "poor man's Jacques Cousteau" appear in publications such as Rolling Stone and a sister magazine he co-created, Outside.
His sixth book, Pass the Butterworms, is good to read and good for you. A reader might actually learn something about history, politics or ecology. There are fascinating stories such as the one about an Indonesian tribe that has a history of cannibalism and head-shrinking, and more intense ones which describe the consequences of "progress" in that same region ("The homogenization of humanity seems to be the direction of history") or the brutal, unsolved murder of two young Americans in Peru by members of an isolated tribe.

    AFRICA MALARIA DAY 2002
MOBILIZING COMMUNITIES TO ROLL BACK MALARIA
Africa celebrated Africa Malaria Day on April 25th. This year the focus was on the Community - particularly on community members such as health workers, mothers, shopkeepers, birth attendants and others who often provide the first point of contact for sick people living in remote, under-served areas. Africa Malaria Day 2002, which marked the second anniversary of the Abuja Declaration, highlighted and celebrated the work done by these individuals, whose efforts often go unrewarded and unrecognised. Countries across Africa organised large scale activities supported by a huge range of partners - WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, UNDP, multi/bi-lateral agencies, international, national and local NGOs, and the private sector, while other partners used the day to organise their own activities. Many thanks to everyone who used this opportunity to join forces and get behind Roll Back Malaria's efforts to halve the burden of malaria by 2010. Any reports or pictures from Africa Malaria Day that you would like to share can be emailed to us at InfoRBM@who.int

    A Review Article

The development of resistance to familiar anti-malarials has created confusion both for Doctors and travellers as to what is the best and most effective anti-malarial to take and which areas of the World require special precautions. Further difficulties are created by the serious side-effects encountered on using the newer drugs. This review will endeavour to elucidate current areas of resistance and recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment. Great stress is given to the warning that no prophylaxis is foolproof and failures arise most commonly from not taking the drugs as prescribed. In particular they must be started 1 week before departure and continued for 4-6 weeks after leaving the malaria area. Any fever up to 12-18months after leaving a malaria area should arouse suspicion of malaria and be investigated accordingly. Appropriate advice must be sought prior to departure from a reputable travel advice centre. Antimalarial drugs

Malaria outbreak in south Philippines kills 31
February 25, 1998 Web posted at: 6:17 a.m. EST (1117 GMT) ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (CNN) An outbreak of malaria has killed 31 people in the southern Philippines and officials on Wednesday blamed bandits for frightening off health teams sent to kill mosquitoes in remote villages. The Department of Health has sent medical teams to Siasi Island, 120 km (75 miles) southwest of Zamboanga, to contain the outbreak, which started in January, regional health director Lourdes Labiano said. Twenty-four villagers on the small island died last month and another seven on Sunday. Another 200 have the disease, she said. Health officials said malaria was endemic in several southern islands because they were heavily forested. But health teams assigned to spray houses with insecticide could not penetrate some villages because of rebels and bandits roaming the area, they said.
    Malaria called a growing threat
Malaria, a disease caused by parasites, causes or contributes to 3 million deaths and 500 million acute illnesses a year, according to the Malaria Foundation. Nearly eradicated in 37 coutries 30 years ago, it has since begun to return, as drug-resistant strains have developed.
