This animal exhibits microphthalmia and agenesis of the upper lid margin. The eyelid malformation is congenital and usually occurs bilaterally. This eye is also microphthalmic and has persistent pupillary membranes which span from the iris to an anterior capsular cataract. Evaluation of the posterior segment is these cases often reveals retinal dysplasia. The effect on vision is, of course variable with the severity of the individual malformations. The eyelid agenesis results in discomfort and progressive corneal fibrosis caused by the eyelid hair contacting the cornea. In mild cases, daily application of topical lubricating ointments will maintains comfort and corneal clarity. In most cases however, surgical correction is necessary. Reconstruction of the eyelid margin usually involves a series of procedures which mobilize conjunctiva from either the lower eyelid or nictitating membrane. Back to "What is your Diagnosis"

Microphthalmia
by Race Foster, DVM and Marty Smith, DVM
The eyeball is comprised of several structures including the cornea, iris, lens, chambers and the retina. The eyeball is located within the bony socket of the head and is partially protected by the three eyelids. Microphthalmia is a condition in which the eyeball is smaller than normal. Usually the internal structures of the eyeball are abnormal as well. Microphthalmia is inherited in Australian Shepherds, Great Danes, Beagles, Collies, Borzoi, Dobermans, Sealyham Terriers, Bedlington Terriers, Portuguese Water Dogs, Shelties, Akitas, Miniature Schnauzers, Labrador Retrievers, Daschunds and Cavalier King Cocker Spaniels. Microphthalmia can also occur in newborns whose mothers received certain medications during pregancy. This is seen, for instance, in pregnant queens who were treated for ringworm with griseofulvin
What are the symptoms?
The eyeball will appear smaller than normal for the breed. Signs of visual impairment will also be noticed.
What are the risks?

From: Kappeler Andreas Hi Alex A brief search in a database revealed that Oncogene carries two mAbs against MTF, clone C5 (CatNr OP126L) and clone D5 (CatNr OP127). No experiences with the reagents in our lab, but according to Oncogene they should both work on FFPE tissue.
