Roger Easterbrooks Living Well with Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome
Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), is present in ten per cent of the population. It is said to be the most common cardiac variation and women have it more than men. Of that 10%, one quarter have mild to severe symptoms. The mitral valve and the autonomic nervous system are formed simultaneously in the unborn infant. When there is a slight variation in this heart valve, it can be reflected as a slight variation in the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Usually the syndrome is activated after one or more major crises take place; that is how mine was uncovered. Most often there is no logical connection between the crisis and activation of the symptoms. Although the MVP and heart look as if they should get the primary attention, it is actually the autonomic nervous system that needs to be the focus of any healing work. The basis for the physical description of the MVP and the list of symptoms comes from the work of Lyn Frederickson M.S.N., author of "Confronting Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome," published in 1988. It is a combination of her medical description and my eight year exploration with this syndrome that are the basis for this article. The mitral valve is located between the left ventricle and left atrium in the heart. When the lower part of the heart contracts, the mitral valve (without a prolapse) remains firm and prevents blood from leaking back into the upper chambers. When the valve is prolapsed, there is slight variation in the shape of the valve that allows one part of the valve to billow back into the upper chamber during contraction of the left ventricle. This protrusion can often be heard through a stethoscope, and the sound is known as a "click." There may also be a slight, leak of the valve during the contraction of the ventricle, which may also be heard as a soft murmur. The variation in the shape of the valve is a condition that is hereditary and may appear in various members of a family. It can feel life threatening but it isn't. It can be life-style threatening. Here is a list of some of the common symptoms of this syndrome:

4. What Is Mitral Valve Prolapse
The book, entitled, "The mitral valve prolapse syndrome/Dysautonomia Survival Guide" is now available.
http://www.mvprolapse.com/what.htm
What is Mitral Valve Prolapse? When a person's mitral valve is somewhat looser than normal, it may allow one of the portions of the valve to "billow" backward slightly into the upper chamber during the heart's contraction (fig. B). This is called prolapse. This "billowing" usually creates a clicking sound that can be heard with a stethoscope. Occasionally, there may be a small leak of blood backwards into the upper chamber of the heart. This can be heard as a heart murmur; however, the heart function is entirely normal. The heart still pumps and receives an adequate blood supply. Prolapsing mitral valves do not tend to degenerate over time. Mitral valve prolapse is the most common cardiac problem and is thought to affect anywhere from five to twenty percent of the general population. Although males are affected, females predominate. With MVP, symptoms do not begin before the early teenage years (approximately age 14 in girls and in 15 in boys); however, people of any age may be affected. MVP has a strong hereditary tendency and is thought to be inherited as a dominant gene. The mitral valve prolapse syndrome is sometimes called

Mitral Valve Prolapse WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE? The mitral valve is one of the four valves of the heart. It is located in the left side of the heart, and it separates the left atrium (or upper chamber) from the left ventricle (or lower pumping chamber). Because the mitral valve lies between the left atrium and left ventricle, it is also known as the left atrioventricular valve. Valves open and close, like doors. The closure of the valves in the heart is what produces the characteristic "lub-dub" heart sounds. They help direct the flow of blood through the heart, normally allowing flow in one direction. The mitral valve leaflets open equally when blood is flowing from the left atrium and filling the left ventricle. The mitral valve leaflets then close, with both leaflets firm and shut, when the left ventricle contracts and pumps the blood out to the body. WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE? Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a condition in which there is a slight variation in shape or structure of the mitral valve, causing one or both of the mitral valve leaflets to "billow" or "bulge" backward into the upper left atrium during the contraction of the lower left ventricle. Remember, when the left ventricle contracts and ejects blood into the aorta and to the body, the mitral valve leaflets should remain firm and shut. Instead, the mitral valve leaflets(s) billow backward causing prolapse Sometimes when the mitral valve leaflet prolapses, it may produce a "click". As mentioned earlier, valves help direct the flow of blood in one direction through the heart. Often, when the mitral valve leaflet billows, or prolapses, it allows for a small backward leak of blood. This may produce a soft murmur. The "click-murmur", if present, can sometimes be heard with a stethoscope. Over the years, MVP has also been called the Click-Murmur Syndrome, the Floppy-Valve Syndrome, and Barlow's Syndrome, after the name of its discoverer.

After several visits with a physician and multiple tests, you're finally given a reason for the symptoms, and then tolddon't worry. Now the questions begin. "What do I have? Mitral valve what? What does that mean? Will it get worse? Does my valve have to be replaced? Am I having a heart attack because I have chest pain? Will this affect my pregnancy? Is this common? How can I feel better?" More than likely, you had similar thoughts and questions when you were first diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. Perhaps you still have a number of questions. Let me begin by telling you, you are not alone. You are among millions of people with MVP or MVPers.

The picture above shows the valves of a normal heart. In the "systole" picture in the upper right corner notice how the ends of the valve meet perfectly to close off the flow of blood. Then, in the picture below, notice how in Mitral Valve Prolapse, the ends of the valve do not quite come together, allowing a leakage of blood back into the chamber of the heart. DEFINITION OF MVP:
A fairly common and often benign disorder in which a slight deformity of the mitral valve (situated in the left side of the heart) can produce a degree of leakage (mitral insufficiency). Mitral valve prolapse causes a characteristic heart murmur that may be heard through a stethoscope.
Often no symptoms are present and the condition may be discovered on a routine examination.
On the other hand, there are many who experience the following symptoms :
Chest pain (sharp, dull or pressing).
Fatigue, shortness of breath.
Dizziness.
Anxiety.
Lightheadedness when getting up from a chair or bed.
Palpitations.

Overview
Mitral valve prolapse is a common condition occurring in approximately 4 - 18% of the population. It is defined as an abnormality of the mitral valves of the heart in which one or both mitral valve flaps close incompletely, often producing either a click or murmur. Conditions linked to MVP include magnesium deficiencies, increased catecholamine productions, anxiety attacks, depression, migraines, allergies and asthma. Interesting facts about the disorder include: Some people, women especially, have what is known as

MVP - How the Symptoms May Interrelate
The chart below illustrates my view of how bacteria and nutritional deficiencies may both be factors that influence the course of mitral valve prolapse syndrome. I believe that if we consider the possibility that nutritional deficiencies, in some cases with an inherited component, are factors in MVP, then we can create a highly logical model of what may likely cause the condition. The chart below provides an example of how MVP and its corresponding symptoms can be linked to nutrition. It provides a logical reason of why MVP often, but not always runs in families, is linked to bacterial

By Richard P. Abben, M.D.

Cardiovascular Institute of the South
Take two commonly occurring medical conditions, put them together and what do you have? In the case of mitral valve prolapse syndrome, you may have a nonexistent disorder that causes a lot of people a good deal of very real discomfort. Mitral valve syndrome links a common and generally benign heart valve malfunction and an equally prevalent neurological stress response to explain a pattern of symptoms that may owe their existence largely, if not exclusively, to our harried lifestyle. Whatever its explanation, mitral valve prolapse syndrome is rarely dangerous, and the measures required to control it are fairly simple though not 100 percent effective. Mitral valve prolapse is a condition in which the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart closes imperfectly. The definition of MVP has been made more specific in recent years, so only about one person in ten currently meets the criteria. Previously it was as high as one in three. Common as it is, a majority of those who have the condition aren't even aware of it. Of the 40 percent who do have symptoms, fatigue, heart palpitations, headache, chest pain and anxiety and panic attacks are the usual complaints, with intermittent bouts of extreme fatigue being by far the most common. In a very small percentage of cases, the mitral valve functions so poorly that it can cause potentially dangerous arrhythmias and other problems which will necessitate surgical repair or even valve replacement.
