The Foundation is a research, educational, referral and information center, dedicated to mood disorders such as depression, manic depression, panic and anxiety states and obsessive compulsive disorders. It is the philosophy of the Foundation that these disorders are, in most cases, biologically caused and can be, for the most part, effectively and safely treated with non-addictive, mood-stabilizing medications, and in some cases with adjunctive psychotherapy and other psychological techniques. Yet millions of Americans experience unrecognized symptoms and therefore are untreated for mood disturbances that cause enormous suffering and hardship. The Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Ronald F. Fieve, the American pioneer in the development of lithium therapy for bipolar disorder, also Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia Presyterian Medical Center, endeavors to educate and inform the public to combat these problems. This can be done through the following programs: Aimed at biochemical, behavioral, and genetic understanding of the causes of depression and anxiety disorders and developing new drug treatments to alleviate them.

Mood Disorders I. What are Mood Disorders? "But when the melancholy fit shall fall
Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud,
That fosters the droop-headed flowers all,
And hides the green hill in an April shroud;
Then glut thy sorrow on a morning rose." John Keats, Ode on Melancholy
We have all felt sad, or melancholy, from time to time. But there is a point where the ache of sadness becomes chronic and insufferable, a mountain of pain to its victim. Mood disorders, predominantly Depression and Bi-polar syndromes, are said to strike one in seven of the population. How Prevalent are Mood Disorders in Children and Adolescents? 7-14% of children will experience an episode of major depression before the age of 15. 20-30% of adult bipolar patients report having their first episode before the age of 20. Out of 100,000 adolescents, two to three thousand will have mood disorders out of which 8-10 will commit suicide.

The information on this site is for educational purposes only and is not intended as a subsitute for medical treatment and professional diagnosis. If you suspect your adolescent suffers from a mood disorder, it is essential that you contact a mental health professional to assess your child's needs. Mood disorders describe a range of behavioral issues that may occur in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. We will focus on mood disorders in teenagers, because in this unique population these behavioral problems may express themselves in ways that make diagnosis more difficult. Mood disorders affect as many as 7% of Americans in any given year. The most common types are depression or mania (or a combination, known as bipolar disorder). Major depressive disorder is the most common diagnosis, and occurs twice as often in women as in men. Mood disorders are considered one of the top ten causes of disability worldwide.

Mood Disorders
Each year, almost 44 million Americans experience a mental disorder (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002). In fact, mental illnesses are among the most common conditions affecting health today. Researchers believe most serious mental illnesses are caused by complex imbalances in the brain's chemical activity. They also believe environmental factors can play a part in triggering, or protecting against, the onset of mental illness.

Everyone, at various times in life, feels sad or blue. It's normal to feel sad on occasion. But what's the difference between "normal" feelings of sadness and the feelings caused by clinical depression?

The Center for Postpartum Health Welcomes You
Although the birth of a baby usually brings exhilaration and feelings of new beginnings, it can be a time of crisis. There is enormous change for the new mother and her family. It is not unusual for new motherhood to bring sadness, anxiety and despair during the early weeks after birth. For two out of 10 women, these feelings may develop into post-partum depression.
AT THE CENTER FOR POSTPARTUM HEALTH, we address the physical, mental, and emotional needs of pregnant and postpartum women and their families. We help facilitate the transition from pregnancy to parenthood.
ASSESSMENT and PREVENTION are key. The earlier the treatment and intervention, the less risk of onset or relapse of postnatal difficulties.
Would you know if you were suffering from postpartum depression?
1. Have you given birth within the last year?
2. Is there a history of depression in your family?
3. Are you crying throughout the day, feeling overwhelmed, anxious and unable to cope?
4. Are you unable to sleep despite extreme fatigue and/or losing weight without intentional dieting?
