Mood Disorders Program Overview Center Personnel Research Programs Center Contact Links Overview While we all experience occasional highs and lows, mood disorders, also known as affective disorders, are characterized by their extremes in both intensity and duration. Even at their most intense, however, symptoms of affective disorders are often misinterpreted as merely mood swings. Worse, affective disorders are sometimes considered personality flaws rather than real medical conditions. The truth is that mood disorders are treatable medical illnesses caused by a complex interaction of genetic, biochemical and environmental factors. An estimated 17.4 million adults in the U.S. suffer from mood disorders, or one out of every seven people. Mission The UCLA Mood Disorders Research Program pursues a dual mission: to treat individuals suffering from mood disorders and to further our understanding of such disorders through research. About Mood Disorders There are several types of mood disorders: major depression, bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression), dysthymia, and cyclothymia.

Welcome to the Online PPD Support Group
Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do, and having a mood disorder can make a hard job feel impossible. Many women experience some form of postpartum mood disorders. Having a mental illness is not a measure of your worth, social status, race or religion. Getting treatment is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and bravery. Mental health in many societies is still often surrounded by misinformation and stigma.
Just as a diabetic has a problem with how her pancreas functions, so does a person with a mental disorder have a problem with how her brain functions. Hormones, genetics and brain chemistry all play a huge role in the onset of mood disorders. Environmental factors and personal experiences also impact an individual's mental health. Some people with mental health issues are able to function by monitoring their lifestyles alone (eating healthfully, staying hydrated, getting adequate rest and exercise, etc.), while others may require medication and talk therapy in addition to some modifications in how they live. This is similar to our diabetic example above in that some diabetics can manage their illness by altering their lifestyles alone while others require insulin injections in addition to changes in their day to day lives.
If you feel that you may be suffering from a postpartum mood disorder, please contact your doctor. Many women find it frightening to seek treatment, or feel a sense of shame at needing help. Remember that the brain is an organ in the body, just like any other part of your body. Understand that there is no more shame in seeking treatment for a brain disorder than there is when seeking treatment for any other ailment.

Bipolar Disorder
and other mood disorders
BIPOLAR DISORDER, (a.k.a manic depression) is a complex and complicating mood disorder. Yet it can be very interesting, intriguing, and seductive to the person who lives with this. I know, I have bipolar disorder. I've only known for sure I was bipolar for a few years, but I've talked with many who've lived it their whole lives, people who have lost loved ones to the disease by suicide. My own immature experiences seem fragmental compared to others. Here I have decided to come open about this illness. I know there are many text book definitions, and diagnosis of bipolar disorder, but here I have tried to make it sound more personal and more understandable. This information is to inform the public, and those who think their child, parent, or loved one may have a mood disorder. Remember just because these symptoms or experiences may sound like you or someone you know that DOES NOT mean that you have a mood disorder. Seek out a professional who can diagnose you correctly. Thank you!! What is Bipolar Disorder?

-UPDATE
Please note that Mr. Arnold sent an email out about this "problem" let me clear some things up. First of all there is no "miscomunication" that he mentions. He has not paid us, he knows this, and this morning he had sent us an email threatening legal action and termination of his contract with us. Secondly he threatens to start terminating your accounts if you have not paid. HE CANNOT DO THAT. His account and his control panel access have been removed, he is unable to currently terminate any accounts. He also says that everyone is tied into a 12 month contract. This is not true, he has not provided the service as promised, and also is unable to actually take any action against you. Do not pay Mr. Arnold a dime.
End Of Update Dear Owner of this website: We sent an email saying we had unsuspended all ldhuk websites for a period of two weeks in an act of good faith that your webhost would pay his large bill. He has not. He actually contacted us and is terminating our contract and going to attempt to take legal action against us. Due to this legal action he plans to take, we do not plan to provide him with any more "good faith". We are sorry to have to take your website down again, however we have no choice.
Below is the original information about the problem:
Your account was suspended due to your webhost(ldhuk.co.uk) not paying his bills (he owes many months of overdue payments)!

The information on this site is for educational purposes only and is not intended as a subsitute for medical treatment and professional diagnosis. If you suspect your adolescent suffers from a mood disorder, it is essential that you contact a mental health professional to assess your child's needs. Is It Bipolor Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)? Sometimes a child might be diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD when in fact he or she has bipolar disorder. In both cases, the teen might be irritable, easily distracted, impulsive, and hyperactive. However, with bipolar disorder teens also often show depression, agitation, rapid mood swings, and problems with affect (doesn't seem to understand the feelings of others). Because of the similarities in these disorders, some researchers believe that as many as 16% of children with bipolar disorder may be misdiagnosed.

The mood disorders (or affective disorders) are a range of conditions that include depression, bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness) and mania. These disorders directly affect some 20% of the population and are amongst the most costly to the community. The Mood Disorders Unit (MDU) was established in 1985 at Prince Henry Hospital and moved to Prince of Wales Hospital in 1999. The aims of the MDU are first, to provide specialized clinical services; secondly, to conduct research in the field of mood disorders; and thirdly, to educate health professionals, those with a mood disorder, and the public in general, about the mood disorders. In 2001 the MDU was involved in the establishment of two bodies to help advance these aims. First, at the University of New South Wales the Mood Disorders Research Centre was set up as a collaborative venture between the Schools of Psychology and Psychiatry, focussing on research and teaching. Secondly, an independent foundation (the Black Dog Foundation ) was established to work towards increasing the support of commerce and government, and expanding the involvement of those, however affected, by one of the mood disorders. The first outcome of these efforts has been the setting up of the

Newly Published Strategic Plan for Mood Disorders Research
More than 20 million children and adults in the U.S. are affected by major depression or bipolar disorder, and depression has been shown to be a leading cause of disability worldwide. In recognition of the scope and burden of these serious medical illnesses, NIMH launched a major effort to assess our current knowledge and to plan a course of research that will move the Nation ahead in answering unsolved questions related to mood disorders. To accomplish the task of reviewing the science and recommending how to spur scientific progress, NIMH convened nine scientific workgroups in January 2001. The groups spanned the breadth of the relevant science, from genetics to clinical trials and psychosocial interventions, to research that examines the service system and obstacles to care. The workgroups were comprised of nationally recognized scientific experts, members of the National Advisory Mental Health Council, representatives of consumer and advocacy groups, and NIMH staff.
