Recently some landlords have been prevented from doing this by court-order (in the United States, where chemical sensitivity is an officially-recognized disability [5]) but the person with multiple chemical sensitivity is unlikely to have enough money to go to court.

Chapter Eleven: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Does PB Lead to MCS?
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a putative condition without a widely accepted clinical case definition, in which persons report new subjective sensitivity to low-level exposures to multiple chemicals and foods, typically following a (self-reported) environmental exposure to pesticides, organic solvents, or building remodeling. The condition has also recently been termed "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance" (TILT) (Miller, 1997; Miller, Ashford, et al., 1997). Symptoms referable to multiple organ systems are reported by subjects with MCS; these include ear-nose-and-throat, CNS, GI, genitourinary, skin, and musculoskeletal symptoms, among others (Davidoff and Keyl, 1996; Miller and Mitzel, 1995). Many ill veterans report new intolerances to chemicals (Gordon 1997), and some studies are underway to further assess chemical sensitivity in ill PGW veterans (Fiedler, Kipen, et al., 1996). The lack of a clinical case definition for either MCS or illnesses in PGW veterans complicates examination of a connection between these two phenomena. Nonetheless, several factors are consistent with a connection between illnesses in some PGW veterans, and "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance," or MCS. Similar exposures, namely to acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting agents, characterize ill PGW veterans and many MCS patients. Some work is beginning to suggest mechanisms by which cholinergic exposures, experienced by some PGW veterans, could induce chemical sensitivity. These mechanisms include partial kindling of the limbic system and alteration of nasopharyngeal mucosal function. Studies have found that similar EEG abnormalities may characterize persons with selected AChE inhibition exposures seen during the PGW (sarin, OP pesticides) and persons with MCS, though it has not been shown that ill PGW veterans with consistent symptoms share these EEG abnormalities (neither has it been shown that they do not). Title: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Dancing Manias
Speaker: Dr. Loren Pankratz, Oregon Health Sciences University , Portland, Oregon.
Date: 7:30 pm, 29 September 1999
Location: Halpern Centre at SFU
Admission: Open to public. Free. Loren Pankratz is a well-known authority on the psychology of deception. He has written and lectured widely on hoaxes, con games, swindles, stage magic, military deception, art fakes, medical quackery, etc. His research has focused on many aspects of so-called factitious diseases (i.e., people who fake medical or psychological symptoms, sometimes unconsciously, for monetary or a variety of other reasons). Dr. Pankratz covered this field of research in his recent book, Patients Who Deceive In this lecture, Dr. Pankratz describes the long history of people who become so concerned about possible contamination through infinitesimal chemical exposures that they begin to exhibit psychosomatic symptoms that resemble toxically induced syndromes. He traces this sort of problem back to the dawn of modern chemistry when people first became aware that there were such things as chemicals to worry about. He compares ancient examples of psychosocial difficulties manifesting themselves as medical complaints to modern ones seen in certain cases of "sick building syndrome," "Gulf War syndrome," "multiple chemical sensitivity," and various other "fatigue" syndromes. Dr. Pankratz will relate the current problems surrounding questionable diagnoses of these conditions in today's society to similar problems faced by physicians and priests who tried to treat the convulsions and dancing manias that erupted periodically during the Middle Ages.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)
Pardon me, but is that your perfume I'm smelling? Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is becoming a familiar medical disorder. MCS is a strong sensitivity to any number of common chemicals and odors. Dr. Mark R. Cullen, professor of medicine and epidemiology at Yale University, gave this definition: "MCS is an acquired disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms, referable to multiple organ systems, occurring in response to demonstrable exposure to many chemically unrelated compounds at doses far below these established in the general population to cause harmful effects." A person with MCS might have a severe reaction to something as simple as another person's perfume, cologne, hand/body cream, or hair spray, or might be made quite ill by the scent of gasoline, chemical solvents, fresh paint or varnish, insect spray, automobile exhaust, or any other odors that we are exposed to daily. Once sensitized, MCS is a life-long problem. It can begin in childhood, or may not make an appearance until the person is an adult. Its onset is usually a toxic exposure to an odor or chemical and a notable reaction to it. Subsequent expose to the same chemical/odor has a cumulative effect, causing more and more distress each time. What once caused only a shortness of breath can eventually become a life-threatening bout with asthma. What started as a mild "fogginess" of the thinking process can develop into severe and debilitating migraine headaches and an inability to concentrate.

  • What is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity? Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a condition in which persons become ill following exposure to certain chemicals encountered in everyday life. Such chemicals include smoke, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, scented products, petroleum products, fumes, and paints. Persons who experience MCS have a more intense reaction to chemicals than most people, in much the same way some individuals have a far more allergic reaction to animals or pollen. How is MCS Related to Environmental Illness(EI)? MCS is acute sensitivity to chemical substances. EI includes not only this but also a broad range of conditions triggered by airborne pollution, food, naturally occurring substances such as molds and pollens, and electromagnetic fields. How Common is MCS? According to recent studies, approximately 15 percent of the population has increased sensitivity to chemicals. It is estimated that physicians have diagnosed five percent of people in the United States, or about 13 million people, as being especially vulnerable to certain common chemicals. There have been several recent studies, cited below, which support these findings. The incidence of MCS seems to be higher with women than men (as is the case with many autoimmune diseases), often appears between the ages of 30 and 50 years, and strikes without regard to race or economic background.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Few of the many doctors and individuals who make claims they suffer from or can diagnose multiple chemical sensitivity present a common definition or causality but in a nutshell the claim is that the human body becomes so overloaded by exposure to chemicals in the environment that subsequent exposure to even small amounts of chemicals can cause severe reactions. In the United States and Canada, advocacy groups are fighting hard for recognition of "multiple chemical sensitivity" ("MCS") as a specific disease. These groups and the patients they represent are demanding that insurance companies cover the cost of expensive and unproven treatment by Òclinical ecologists." They are also seeking payment through worker's compensation and Social Security Disability programs and pressing for special workplace and housing conditions. Many people who believe they have MCS suffer greatly. In extreme cases, afflicted individuals perceive almost everything around them as allergy-causing and potentially life-threatening. Many of these individuals change their lifestyle drastically and attempt to live in a pristine, controlled environment, virtual prisoners of their perceived sensitivity. Unfortunately, the "MCS" diagnosis and its associated treatments rarely lead to improved health status and may divert patients from appropriate medical treatment. Some individuals spend tens of thousands of dollars in fruitless attempts to attain relief.

The expression "multiple chemical sensitivity" ("MCS") is used to describe people with numerous troubling symptoms attributed to environmental factors. Many such people seek air cleaners to help with common indoor gases pollutants such as perfumes, plastics, home furnishings, cleaning materials, and common off-gassing of materials in the home, etc.. Unfortunately, many air cleaners on the market today believe that since they remove pollutants from the air that they are also good for MCS suffers. The problem is that many of materials used (Glues, Silicone, Bonding agents , Paints, HEPA material, etc.) to make those air cleaners also may contribute to the problem that MCS suffers have. Many MCS suffers find that they can not tolerate the off-gassing of the materials that make up the air cleaner that is suppose to help them. The following air cleaners are SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR MCS SUFFERS ! These air cleaners use NO Glues, NO Silicone, NO Caulking and NO Bonding
