"Most heart murmurs are not life-threatening," said Dr. Miguel Quiñones, professor of medicine at The DeBakey Heart Center at Baylor and The Methodist Hospital in Houston. "Many people who experience heart murmurs have perfectly healthy hearts. But, in addition to a regular heartbeat, the stethoscope picks up a buzzing or swishing sound as well. A murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow and is usually linked to a heart- valve disorder. Quiñones says there are two kinds of heart murmurs: functional and pathologic. An functional murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow through a normal heart valve. A pathologic murmur is due to blood flowing through a defective valve or an abnormal opening in the heart. "More than half of all patients diagnosed with a heart murmur have the functional type that doesn't require follow-up or treatment," said Quiñones, who is also director of the echocardiography laboratory at Methodist.

Murmurs of the Heart A heart murmur is a sound produced as blood flows through the chambers and large blood vessels of the heart during the cardiac cycle of contraction and relaxation. Some murmurs are benign or harmless and are more of a finding than a condition. A benign murmur is not associated with any significant underlying abnormality of the heart or its vessels. Many young people can have benign flow murmurs and still have normal cardiac structure and function. A pathologic heart murmur is one associated with a structural or functional abnormality of the heart. Most murmurs are produced as blood flows past the cardiac valves, which separate the chambers of the heart, or through the valves that lead to the great vessels of the lungs and the systemic circulation. If the flow is excessive or turbulent, a murmur may be manifest. Blood flowing through a tight valve will produce a murmur. Blood that is leaking back across an improperly sealing valve also can cause a murmur. Occasionally, abnormal communications (holes) between chambers of the heart can result in the presence of a murmur. Diagnosing a heart murmur begins with auscultation of (listening to) the heart-usually with a stethoscope. The location, quality, pitch and variation in the sound are all important clues to whether the murmur is benign or pathologic. One of the most useful tests in evaluating a murmur is an echocardiogram. This is a sound wave test that produces a real-time image of the beating heart and is very good in assessing the status and function of the cardiac valves and chambers. Sometimes further studies, such as cardiac catheterization, will be required to further track down the specific abnormality and its significance, and to determine which cases will require treatment.

Friday we went to the Loft with Tunch and Clio, Arrina showed up as we were leaving one of the other bars near by. Saturday.... I must have slept the whole day away.... between phone calls. I was supposed to go to a party and I hope Val isn't upset that I didn't go. Today I was supposed to work out with Jaya, Clio, and Persephone..... but I was so tired and crampy. Then we were supposed to drive around A's neighborhood and stop by her house to pick up a book, but that didn't happen either. This time Eldan and I both slept the whole day away. I have to fill in for someone else tomorrow. I hope I can stay awake long enough to get the work done. For some reason I just can't stay awake. I've been having a better time keeping my CPAP on. I still take it off, but it seems like it stays on longer. I'm trying to make a concious effort to hit the "ramp up" button when I wake up rather than rip the mask off and go back to sleep. I guess I have gotten a lot of reading done this weekend. And I did the dishes... so the weekend wasn't a total bust. Sounds pretty pathetic to me.

The murmur is usually the result of an irregular flow of blood through the heart that rarely affects the overall health of the child. If your child has a heart murmur, he/she can be treated like a normal, healthy child. Unless otherwise directed by your child's doctor, make sure your child gets plenty of exercise and eats right. INNOCENT HEART MURMURS are not the result of structural abnormalities. They are often very faint and can't be heard consistently. Innocent murmurs are harmless and usually disappear by adulthood. COMMON UNDERLYING HEART DEFECTS If the cause of the murmur is from a heart defect, it's commonly either a septal or a valvular problem. Septal defects are small openings in the partition (the septum) that separates the left and right sides of the heart. These openings can allow blood to flow irregularly between the two sides. Many small septal defects will usually close on their own. Surgery may be necessary if the defects are large or infected or cause symptoms of heart failure. Valvular defects refer to abnormalities of the valves that keep blood from flowing "backward" into the heart chambers. A defective valve might allow blood to back up in the wrong direction. This interrupts the normal blood flow. Like septal defects, they can be treated. Surgery may be recommended to replace the damaged valves.

These vibrations are heard as "murmurs" when the veterinarian listens to the heart with a stethoscope. The location of the murmur can provide information about the part of the heart most likely affected. The heart murmurs are graded according to how loud they sound and if they are accompanied by a "palpable thrill." A "palpable thrill" means that the vibration is strong enough that it actually can be felt through the animal's chest wall. What causes heart murmurs? The heart murmur is caused by the abnormal or turbulent flow of blood through the heart.
