The functional organization of skeletal muscle. All skeletal muscle fibers possess a neuromuscular junction by which excitatory signals are transmitted from the nervous system via neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. The binding of acetylcholine to nicotinic receptors on the post-synaptic membrane of the muscle causes a local change in the voltage of the muscle membrane (sarcolemma). The voltage change affects the neighboring channels, allowing Na to enter and eventually K to flow out: this ion movement produces the action potential which propagates along the sarcolemma and inward via the invaginations of the transverse tubule system. This rapid voltage change next initiates the gating of Ca channels (i.e., dihydropyridine receptors) located within the transverse tubule which in turn, by some yet to be determined mechanism, cause the release of Ca from the sarcoplasmic reticulum via a set a channels known as the ryanodine receptors. This released Ca binds to troponin, the calcium binding protein that is part of the contractile apparatus. The binding of Ca

    Disorders of the Musculoskeletal System
MUSCLE DISORDERS AND SPORTS INJURIES Over 600 muscles drape the human skeleton and give the body its characteristic form. They enable us to walk down the street, throw a ball, and stand up straight. The muscles we are most aware of are called skeletal or striated muscles. Skeletal muscles are most obvious to us visually (they are the muscles that lie just beneath the skin's surface) and they are also the only muscles that we can consciously flex and relax (voluntary muscles). There are three types of muscles:
Striated Muscles. Capable of voluntary movement and connected to the bones by tough tissue called tendons. When you consciously move a part of your body, you use striated muscles. Smooth Muscles. Associated with many of the internal organs such as the stomach, intestines, uterus, and blood vessels. These muscles move food through the intestines, cause the uterus to contract during labor, and allow the body's vessels to dilate and contract. Cardiac Muscle.

DISORDERS OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEMENTIA
    DEFINITION

Dementia describes a progressive and sometimes irreversible loss of intellectual function that eventually impairs an individual's ability to work and socialize (this condition was previously called senility). Functions typically impaired in dementia include memory, learning ability, judgment, rational thought, personality, and capacity for abstract thought. The impairment may be mild at first, with problems in remembering appointments or misplacing objects. Over time, dementia may become so severe that the person is totally dependent upon others for normal activities of daily living (i.e., dressing, personal hygiene). One million Americans over the age of 65 have dementia that is severe enough to require daily help and supervision to protect them from injury. About 2 million others have mild dementia and are able to care for themselves. Forty percent of people in nursing homes suffer from dementia, although it is not considered a normal part of the aging process. Alzheimer's Disease.

The musculoskeletal system is comprised of bones muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other components of joints . The hard outer part of the bone is made up of proteins and a substance called hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite stores most of the body's calcium and is primarily responsible for the strength of bones. Marrow is located in the center of each bone. Blood cells are manufactured within the marrow. Bones come together to form joints. Joints are responsible for the degree and direction of motion. Muscles are comprised of bundles of fibers and are responsible for posture and movement. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and are arranged in opposing groups surrounding the joints. Tendons and ligaments are two types of tissue. Both of these tissues strengthen and support joints, facilitating movement.

Bones come together forming joints. Joints make possible the degree and direction of motion. Joints also provide stability and help to prevent damage to bones from constant use. Muscles are comprised of bundles of fibers and assist with posture and movement. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and are arranged in opposing groups surrounding the joints. Several disorders are associated with joints and muscles. Some of these disorders include, but are not limited to, myositis rhabdomyolysis arthritis hip degeneration , and fibromyalgia Recently, the Bayer Pharmaceutical company removed its popular cholesterol lowering drug Baycol from the market after reports that at least 40 people have died after developing myositis and rhabdomyolysis caused by the drug. If no, go down to symptom B). B). Muscle mounts contain cysts with worms and larvae Yes The fish is the intermediate host for these worms Yes Fish captured in the wild are often infected with these. If larvae appear in offspring bred in the aquarium, they they were brought in with their intermediate hosts. Do not feed these fish any live foods. Try treating with De-Los -or- Paracide-X. If no, go down to symptom C). C). The musculature is soft and white in places, and contains cysts which release may spores when pressed in a squash mount Yes Sporozoan Cysts of the genus Pleistophora are involved Yes Treatment may be attempted with Furazolidone Powder , but is rarely sucessful.

    Mission Statement
    • Background
Investigators of muscle function and muscle disorders are working in many different departments of several schools at the University of Minnesota. There are loose affiliations of some of these investigators (e.g. the Malignant Hyperthermia Journal Club), but most faculty are working within their own departments without much awareness or interaction with other muscle investigators. Despite this lack of cooperation, the depth of interest and expertise in muscle disorders is great. Researchers in the Medical School (Departments of Physiology , Biochemistry, Neurology, Anesthesiology , Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Opthalmology), Veterinary School (Departments of Pathobiology, Clinical and Population Sciences) and the Institute of Technology Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering ) have all expressed a strong interest in establishing a center to facilitate communication and collaboration. Individual participants have expertise in muscle anatomy, electrophysiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and development. Numerous faculty members have clinical expertise in either human or veterinary muscle diseases. Currently funded research projects include studies of normal muscle function, naturally occurring disorders of muscle, chemically-altered muscle function and transgenically-developed model systems of muscle disease. Despite this breadth of expertise and research, to date there has been no forum for communication, inadequate awareness of the expertise on campus, and lack of support for collaboration.
