The Spinal Cord The Brain Stem And Cerebellum The Diencephalon The Basal Ganglia ... The Cerebral Cortex Neurological problems frequently result from lesions that spare the central nervous system, but involve nerve roots, plexuses, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction or muscle. We cannot hope to review the anatomy of all the nerves and muscles in the body, but we will summarize the deficits resulting from pathology in various peripheral sites, and will list a few nerves that you should be familiar with.
Roots, plexuses and nerves:
Motor deficits
These are the features of lower motor neuron dysfunction, and include weakness, atrophy, and, at times, fasciculations (spontaneous firing of one nerve fiber, resulting in contraction of the muscles fibers that it innervates). The distribution depends upon the nerve(s) affected.
Sensory deficits
These may reflect damage to large sensory fibers (loss of vibration and position) or to small fibers (loss of pain and temperature) or both.
Autonomic deficits
Changes in skin temperature and sweating often accompany peripheral nerve lesions, but are difficult to assess reliably.

Laryngeal Muscle Tension Disorders: Voice Manifestations
"Laryngeal muscle tension disorder" is the general term given to describe a variety of conditions that can cause both voice and breathing problems. When the voice is primarily affected, these disorders are also called muscle tension dysphonia. This page provides more information on how laryngeal muscle tension dysphonia can affect the voice. Laryngeal muscle tension disorders can also produce severe airway obstruction, and a separate page describes this condition.
Voice Disorders and Laryngeal Muscle Tension Dysphonia:
When the disorder primarily affects the voice, the condition is called a muscle tension dysphonia . ("Dysphonia" is the term used to describe an abnormal sounding voice). Speaking and singing requires extremely high coordination of many muscles, and under some circumstances these muscles may lose some of this coordination or they may contract inappropriately. This can produce a hoarse voice, neck pain, neck fatigue, and even complete loss of the voice. In most cases the problem in muscle tension dysphonia (MTD for short) can be said to exist at the level of the neck or the larynx. It differs from a different disorder called

Reviews
‘Hands down, this book is the best current publication in its category. The seventh edition is well timed to capture the massive increase of information since the previous edition of 1994.’ Doody’s Review Service ‘… content and writing are excellent and the book is a pleasure to interrogate. It remains an essential library item.’ C. M. Wiles, Brain ‘For busy clinicians, the beautifully illustrated and clearly written figures in this edition make it easy to fully comprehend … The book maintains a state-of-the-art ability to diagnose and treat diseases of skeletal muscle with a sufficient understanding of their scientific basis. This edition is truly a concise, but comprehensive text for scientists as well as clinicians.’ Masfumi Matsuo, Pediatrics International ‘Combining essential new knowledge with the fundamentals of history taking and clinical examination, and extensively illustrated, this book will continue to be the mainstay for practicing physicians and biomedical scientists concerned with muscle disease.’ New Medical World Weekly

Baycol Frequently Asked Questions How is Rhabdomyolysis detected? Rhabdomyolysis is indicated by the following symptoms:
  • abnormal urine color - usually dark red or brownish;
  • muscle pain, weakness and/or tenderness;
  • fever;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • general malaise.
In addition to these symptoms, rhabdomyolysis may be indicated if a urinalysis (test of the urine) and blood analysis reveal increased levels of myoglobin in the system. There are other components of urinalysis and blood testing that indicate rhabdomyolysis. These indicators can be explained by your doctor. What are some of the Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis? The most common symptom of rhabdomyolysis is muscle ache and/or tenderness - often experienced in the muscles of the back, legs and arms. Additional symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting and a general feeling of weakness. Darkened urine is perhaps the most telltale symptom of rhabdomyolysis. This is caused by the release of muscle contents into the bloodstream. What should I do if I have experienced the Symptoms while taking Baycol®/Lipobay®?

Questions and Answers Does It Run in the Family? MDA's Search for a Treatment or Cure ... MDA is Here to Help You INTRODUCTION
Dear Friends: If you've just learned that you or a loved one has a metabolic muscle disorder, you're probably both relieved and concerned. That's how I felt when I learned at age 27 that I had muscle phosphorylase deficiency, or McArdle's disease.
Keith Stout It was a great relief to have a name and an explanation for a problem I'd had since early childhood. Knowing that my disease is rare and hard to diagnose helped me understand why I'd spent so many years believing I needed to "try harder" but only feeling weaker when I did. It was a relief to know that I wasn't "lazy" and wasn't the only one with this problem. But getting a diagnosis also raised some questions. What treatment was there? Would my symptoms get worse? Did the disease affect more than my voluntary muscles? How could I avoid episodes of weakness? Would my children have the same disease? All those questions are addressed in this brochure from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. MDA offers information and support that will help you move from self-doubt to self-management of your metabolic disorder.

There now are several different pathological entities. These are: tendinitis, paratendinitis, tendinosis, partial and complete rupture. Tendinitis is a catch term for inflammation of the tendon itself from a knee injury, and can often co-exist with paratendinitis causing all the symptoms of knee pain, cramps, spasm and aches. The cause of tendinitis usually results from microscopic tears within the tendon and triggering an inflammatory response within the tendon. Common areas susceptible to tendinitis are; achilles, patella, adductor longus, supraspinatus, biceps, tibialis posterior and flexor hallucis longus tendons.
