This condition is called ischemic cardiac disease. Typical ischemic cardiacdiseases include myocardial infarction and angina pectoris.

The oxygen and nutrition required for human activity are conveyed by blood circulating throughout the body. After the blood receives an adequate amount of oxygen by the gas exchange process in the lungs, it is pumped throughout the body by means of regular contractions and dilations of the heart. The heart works as a pump to deliver blood to the whole body. To accomplish this vital task, the heart has thick muscle walls (cardiac muscles), which also require a supply of oxygen and nutrition from blood streaming through the arteries. The main blood vessels, or arteries, which supply blood directly to the cardiac muscles are called the coronary arteries.
What is PTCA? Currently, PTCA is a typical treatment for myocardial infarction or angina pectoris. Briefly stated, in this treatment a narrow tube with a balloon at its tip (balloon catheter) is inserted into an artery in the groin, wrist, or elbow, and the balloon then inflated at the occlusion (blockage) or stenosis site to improve blood flow in the coronary arteries.
What are the advantages of PTCA?

Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) What is a heart attack (myocardial infarction or MI)?
A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when one of more regions of the heart muscle experience a severe or prolonged decrease in oxygen supply caused by blocked blood flow to the heart muscle. The blockage is often a result of atherosclerosis a buildup of plaque, known as cholesterol, and other fatty substances. Plaque inhibits and obstructs the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, thus reducing the flow to the rest of the body. If the blood and oxygen supply is cut off severely or for a long period of time, muscle cells of the heart suffer severe and devastating damage and die. The result is damage or death to the area of the heart that became affected by reduced blood supply. What are the risk factors for heart attack?
There are two types of risk factors for heart attack, including:
Inherited (or genetic):
  • these are risk factors you are born with that cannot be changed, but can be improved with medical management and lifestyle changes

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Dual Isotope Myocardial Perfusion Imaging in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. II. Predictive Factors for Perfusion Abnormalities ABSTRACT.
We have reported that 40% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) had abnormal myocardial perfusion studies. Here we investigated risk factors for abnormal myocardial perfusion in a cohort of women with SLE without history of coronary artery disease. Consecutive women with SLE followed at a large lupus clinic underwent single photon emission computed tomography dual isotope myocardial perfusion imaging (DIMPI) following pharmacological stress using dipyridamole. At the time of study each patient had a clinical and laboratory assessment performed by a standard protocol. We compared traditional risk factors as well as disease and therapy related factors in those with and without perfusion abnormalities. Myocardial perfusion abnormalities are common in women with SLE without known coronary artery disease (CAD), suggesting a high burden of subclinical CAD. Several metabolic and therapy related factors appear to be associated with the process of atherogenesis in SLE. These results suggest that SLE should be considered a predisposing factor for atherosclerosis. (J Rheumatol 2003;30:288-91) Key Indexing Terms: LUPUS

About NHLBI
MISSION The Division of Heart and Vascular Diseases plans and directs the NHLBI's research grant, contract, and training programs in heart and vascular diseases. These programs encompass institute- and investigator-initiated basic research, targeted research, specialized centers and clinical trials. The DHVD maintains surveillance over developments in its program areas and assesses the national need for research on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The DHVD ensures that effective new techniques, treatments and strategies resulting from medical research are transferred to the community through professional, patient, and public education programs in a timely manner. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES HEART RESEARCH PROGRAM (HRP) Heart Development, Function and Failure SRG VASCULAR BIOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAM (VBRP) This Program supports research in atherosclerosis, hypertension, basic vascular biology and gene therapy for the prevention and/or treatment of vascular diseases. Other targeted areas focus on the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of excess cardiovascular disease in diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications of HIV/AIDS. Specific programs include Specialized Centers of Research focused on molecular medicine and atherosclerosis, molecular genetics of hypertension, and basic and clinical gene therapy studies. The Program comprises two Scientific Research Groups (SRG) which are described below. Atherosclerosis SRG Hypertension SRG

This guidance is produced by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). Technology appraisals produced by NICE have been developed by a team of experts aiming to produce guidance for both the NHS and patients on medicines, medical equipment and clinical procedures based on evidence of clinical and cost effectiveness. Made available in May 2000, this appraisal includes a practice guideline and a patient-oriented information leaflet. The guidance will be reviewed in the light of new evidence in April 2003.
