THE GOOD DRUG GUIDE
...modafinil ('Provigil') is a memory-improving and mood-brightening psychostimulant. It enhances wakefulness and vigilance, but its pharmacological profile is notably different from the amphetamines methylphenidate Ritalin ) or cocaine . Modafinil is less likely to cause jitteriness, anxiety, or excess locomotor activity - or lead to a hypersomnolent 'rebound effect' - than traditional stimulants . Subjectively, it feels smoother and cleaner than the amphetamines too. Current research suggests modafinil, like its older and better-tested analogue adrafinil , is a safe, effective and well-tolerated agent. It is long-acting and doesn't tend to cause peripheral sympathetic stimulation. Yet its CNS action isn't fully understood. Modafinil induces wakefulness in part by its action in the anterior hypothalamus . Its dopamine -releasing action in the nucleus accumbens is weak and dose-dependent; the likelihood of dose-escalation and tolerance is apparently small. Modafinil has central alpha 1 adrenergic agonist effects i.e. it directly stimulates the receptors. More significant, perhaps, is its ability to increase excitatory

Narcolepsy affects an estimated 25 in every 100,000 people in the United States. This sleep disorder is primarily characterized by intermittent, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. Three additional symptoms are typically associated with narcolepsy: cataplexy (short-lived intermittent muscle weakness), hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations (hallucinations while falling asleep or waking), and sleep paralysis (paralysis while falling asleep or waking). Narcolepsy usually begins when a person is in their teens or early twenties. Stimulants and antidepressants are used to treat narcolepsy and subsequent cataplexy. Although it has been linked with blood pressure management and depression, the genesis of narcolepsy is unknown. However, recent advances in narcolepsy study suggest the possibility of a cure. Incidence Narcolepsy usually begins in the teens or early twenties (10 to 20 years old), but this varies; both young children and the elderly experience sleep attacks as well. Approximately 125,000 people in the United States alone suffer from this disorder, with an equal incidence among both women and men. Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep onset are the hallmarks of narcolepsy. Whether narcolepsy is a life-long disorder or not is controversial. Some evidence suggests that it is, while other studies have shown that symptoms fade in older age.

Facts About Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder with no known cause. The main characteristic of narcolepsy is excessive and overwhelming daytime sleepiness, even after adequate nighttime sleep. A person with narcolepsy is likely to become drowsy or to fall asleep, often at inappropriate times and places. Daytime sleep attacks may occur with or without warning and may be irresistible. These attacks can occur repeatedly in a single day. Drowsiness may persist for prolonged periods of time. In addition, nighttime sleep may be fragmented with frequent wakenings. 4 pages. The neurological disorder is characterized by excessive sleepiness that is typically associated with cataplexy (a sudden loss of muscle tone and paralysis of voluntary muscles that is associated with a strong emotion) and other REM sleep abnormalities such as sleep paralysis, (Imobility of the body that occurs in the transition from sleep to wakefulness.) and hypnagogic hallucinations ( pre-sleep dreams). Stanford Researchers Nab Narcolepsy Gene For Sleep Disorders
August 5, 1999 STANFORD - After a decade-long search, a Stanford-led team has identified a gene that causes the sleep disorder narcolepsy - a breakthrough that brings a cure for this disabling condition within reach, the scientists say. The researchers, led by Emmanuel Mignot, MD, PhD , associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, used a technique called positional cloning to pinpoint the gene in dogs, one of the few species besides humans known to develop narcolepsy. Mignot predicts the finding will not only help the roughly 135,000 Americans who suffer from narcolepsy, but in time it will shed light on two of the biggest mysteries in sleep research: how and why we sleep. "This discovery is the exciting culmination of 36 years of research on narcolepsy at Stanford," said William Dement, MD, PhD , director of the Sleep Disorders Research Center at Stanford. "Narcolepsy is the only known neurological disorder that affects the brain and sleep in such a dramatic way," said Mignot, who is director of Stanford's Center for Narcolepsy.

Well as you the website users demand it, I'm going back to work on the site, I've got a massive increase in requests to post Doctors and Connections, not mentioning (but I just did, see how that slips in) all those that have been sent over the past + - year.
The main reasons I've been gone so long from this post is that #1 I used to have a financial supporter which inspired me to work harder, I lost that support early this year to no fault of the backer or this website but from a thing I'm seeing more and more of, PWN becoming poisoned by their own meds, almost allergic in a way the doctors call it a Toxic Reaction. What basically happens is that the meds you've been taking for years suddenly make you terribly ill, the only choice you have is to stop taking them.
If you're looking for the previous posts that were here, including the requests for help and editors, etc. they're down at the bottom of the page before the counter.

Do you have a sleep disorder? You may be surprised at the answer. Answer the questions to the right and see for yourself. Sleep Disorder Symptoms If you or someone you know has any of the signs or symptoms to the right, obstructive sleep apnea may be the cause. If you check yes to one or more, see your Primary Care Physician and get a referral to the ENMSDC. See below for a description of the most common sleep disorders. yes no Excessive daytime sleepiness Kicking legs Recurrent waking from sleep Unrefreshing sleep Daytime fatigue Trouble concentrating Morning headaches Snoring, choking, gasping or pauses of breathing during sleep Insomnia At Least 15% of the population suffers from insomnia - difficulty falling or staying asleep - every year. 57. Texas Sleep Disorders Center - John D. Seifert M.D.
Treatment of snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, night terrors, sleep walking, bed wetting and narcolepsy.
http://Texassleepdisorders.com
At Texas Regional Sleep Disorder Center, our approach to snoring and sleep apnea is comprehensive. Snoring is caused by an obstruction of air while one Is sleeping as it passes through the nose and to the back of the throat, or pharynx. Many times the snoring is not serious enough to cause any physical illness. Other times the snoring is a symptom of a very severe obstruction of breathing and the body has to work to breath to maintain normal bodily functions. If one has sleep apnea, breathing can stop for up to five minutes and during this time, when the breathing has stopped, the pulse increases and the blood pressure increases so as to give emergency needs of oxygen to the body. If this process Is allowed to progress then the individual having this is more prone to permanent high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, leading to stroke and sudden death. Sleep apnea can affect people of all ages. Children get sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils and adenoids. This can happen in a newborn. This is usually manifested in children by fatigue, irritability, and of course, the audible snoring and breathing sensations. Breathing obstruction can be either in the nose or in the oral pharynx. In the nose, it is caused by cartilaginous or bony obstruction of the nasal septum which divides the nose into right and left compartments. It also can be caused by chronic sinusitis when one assumes the recumbent position, the infectious material rolls out of the paranasal sinuses and stops us the nose making one breathe through their mouth. After a period of time, this gasping for air through the mouth causes elongation of the soft palate and uvula, and later the tongue will press against the soft palate and uvula which has been elongated by this sleep apnea process, and breathing will stop.
