Full size image available below Narcolepsy The incurable sleep disorder, narcolepsy, has long mystified scientists. But recently, several discoveries culled from animal research indicate that molecular brain malfunctions may participate in the development of the ailment. The new insights are focusing the search for targeted human treatments for narcolepsy as well as other types of sleeping problems. Dramatically drowsy during calculus class? Maybe it's the monotone teacher, an overdose of David Letterman or, perhaps, narcolepsy. This brain disorder, which afflicts an estimated 200,000 Americans, is marked by an uncontrollable, overwhelming desire to sleep during the day. The attacks can occur at any time, even in the middle of a conversation about yesterday's homework.
Narcoleptics also may experience vivid, scary dreams and a temporary inability to move before nodding off or awakening. Bouts of sudden muscle weakness, termed cataplexy, also may erupt. A laughing fit or other experience tied to a strong emotion will set off the weakening, causing problems ranging from a slackened jaw to a complete body collapse where a narcoleptic appears knocked out.

Imagine listening to a funny joke, then in the middle of laughing, your legs suddenly buckle and you are unable to move for the next several minutes. Maybe you are in class, but you are incredibly drowsy and finally just can't stay awake even though you had plenty of sleep the night before. These are examples of what people with narcolepsy experience. People with narcolepsy have trouble staying awake. Narcoleptic often feel drowsy and fall asleep, even in the middle of the day, sometime in the middle of activities that produce strong emotions. It is thought that narcolepsy occurs when rapid eye movement (REM) sleep occurs while people are awake. Although the cause of narcolepsy is unknown, it does occasionally run in families. If one person in a family has the disorder, another relative may be susceptible to developing it if certain environmental triggers occur.
Symptoms
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness: people may fall asleep when they are doing a boring task or when they are working alone. These sleep attacks may become more frequent and occur at inappropriate and dangerous times such as when they are driving a car.
  • Cataplexy: sudden loss of muscle tone. Loss of muscle tone in the legs may cause a person to fall down. In people with normal sleep/wake functioning, loss of muscle tone is associated exclusively with REM sleep.

Narcolepsy affects an estimated 25 in every 100,000 people in the United States. This sleep disorder is primarily characterized by intermittent, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. Three additional symptoms are typically associated with narcolepsy: cataplexy (short-lived intermittent muscle weakness), hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations (hallucinations while falling asleep or waking), and sleep paralysis (paralysis while falling asleep or waking). Narcolepsy usually begins when a person is in their teens or early twenties. Stimulants and antidepressants are used to treat narcolepsy and subsequent cataplexy. Although it has been linked with blood pressure management and depression, the genesis of narcolepsy is unknown. However, recent advances in narcolepsy study suggest the possibility of a cure. Incidence Narcolepsy usually begins in the teens or early twenties (10 to 20 years old), but this varies; both young children and the elderly experience sleep attacks as well. Approximately 125,000 people in the United States alone suffer from this disorder, with an equal incidence among both women and men. Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep onset are the hallmarks of narcolepsy. Whether narcolepsy is a life-long disorder or not is controversial. Some evidence suggests that it is, while other studies have shown that symptoms fade in older age.

Narcolepsy is a serious medical disorder and a key to understanding other sleep disorders Narcolepsy is a disabling illness affecting more than 1 in 2,000 Americans. Most individuals with the disorder are not diagnosed and are thus not treated. The disease is principally characterized by a permanent and overwhelming feeling of sleepiness and fatigue. Other symptoms involve abnormalities of dreaming sleep, such as dream-like hallucinations and finding oneself physically weak or paralyzed for a few seconds (see Symptoms). The Stanford University Sleep Clinic was the first medical clinic ever established to specialize in sleep disorders. It was founded in the early 1970s by Dr. William Dement to diagnose and treat narcoleptic patients. The Stanford Center for Narcolepsy was established in the 1980s and is now directed by Drs. Emmanuel Mignot and Seiji Nishino. The Center for Narcolepsy is part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and has published more than 100 articles on narcolepsy. It is the world leader in narcolepsy research. Several hundred patients with the disorder are currently treated at the Center or participate in various research protocols. Other research protocols are conducted in animals models of narcolespy. The Stanford Center for narcolepsy was the first to report that narcolepsy-cataplexy is caused by hypocretin (orexin) abnormalities in both animal models and humans (see Research). We are always looking for volunteers in our narcolepsy research studies.

BRINGING SECRETS OF THE NIGHT TO THE LIGHT OF DAY... Understanding the symptoms of sleep disorders. NARCOLEPSY What is narcolepsy? -One of the commoner causes of severe excessive sleepiness. -There are three basic reasons that a person could be too sleepy: INADEQUATE OR POOR QUALITY SLEEP Best example: patients with sleep apnea . Their alertness will be restored once their sleep-related breathing problems are controlled. IMPAIRED BRAIN MECHANISMS THAT NORMALLY SHOULD KEEP ONE AWAKE In such cases, even if sleep were perfect, the individual would still be too sleepy . Best example: narcolepsy. A COMBINATION OF BOTH OF THE ABOVE For example, some people develop narcolepsy in late childhood or their teen yearsand then, with increased age and weight, also develop sleep apnea: making an already bad situation worse. CRUCIAL POINT ! If a patient with both sleep apnea and narcolepsy is treated at a facility that focusses only on sleep apnea and if the diagnosis of narcolepsy is missed, the results can be disastrous. Treatment of sleep apnea in individuals with both problems will make them "better but not better enough The fact that management of sleep apnea will protect them against cardiac complications and stroke will be small consolation should they subsequently fall asleep at the wheel anyway, from their still untreated narcolepsy, with serious injury or death of self or others.

The main reasons I've been gone so long from this post is that #1 I used to have a financial supporter which inspired me to work harder, I lost that support early this year to no fault of the backer or this website but from a thing I'm seeing more and more of, PWN becoming poisoned by their own meds, almost allergic in a way the doctors call it a Toxic Reaction. What basically happens is that the meds you've been taking for years suddenly make you terribly ill, the only choice you have is to stop taking them.

76. Center For Narcolepsy - Symptoms And Diagnosis
Epidemiology, socioeconomical impact, symptoms and diagnosison narcolepsy, Stanford Center for narcolepsy.
http://www.med.stanford.edu/school/Psychiatry/narcolepsy/symptoms.html

Epidemiology
Socio-Economic Impact Symptoms Diagnosis EPIDEMIOLOGY Narcolepsy is a frequent disorder: it is the second leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness diagnosed by sleep centers after obstructive sleep apnea. Studies on the epidemiology of narcolepsy show an incidence of 0.2 to 1.6 per thousand in European countries, Japan and the United States, a frequency at least as large as that of Multiple Sclerosis. In many cases, however, diagnosis is not made until many years after the onset of symptoms. This is often due to the fact that patients consult a physician after many years of excessive sleepiness, assuming that sleepiness is not indicative of a disease. SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT Narcolepsy is a very disabling and underdiagnosed illness: the effect of narcolepsy on its victims is devastating. Studies have shown that even treated narcoleptic patients are often markedly psychosocially impaired in the area of work, leisure, interpersonal relations, and are more prone to accidents. These effects are even more severe than the well-documented deleterious effects of epilepsy when similar criteria are used for comparison. The large majority of narcoleptic patients in this country are still undiagnosed, and narcoleptic subjects are most often diagnosed only after many years of struggle. In one recent study, the mean number of years between the onset of symptoms and correct diagnosis was 14 years. Since the symptoms of narcolepsy usually appear during adolescence, this means that most narcoleptic patients are diagnosed too late to prevent the dramatic impact of the disease on their personal and professional development.

    Living Nightmare - programme summary
Sleeping is an essential part of everyone's life yet it remains little understood is barely understood. You might think it's a relaxing recharge but in fact your brain is working harder at times overnight than when you're conscious in the day.
"Certain times during sleep, the brain is more active than during wakefulness"
Dr Thomas Kilduff, Stanford Research Institute International Fresh insight into why and how we sleep has come from studying people with sleep disorders, especially sufferers of narcolepsy. The condition means that people fall asleep many times a day, completely out of the blue. A less known symptom is paralysing attacks, that can cause narcoleptics to fall to the ground - unable to move - several times a day. If a way can be found to ease their symptoms, it could open the way to helping any of us to control our sleep patterns and perhaps even to go without rest while staying alert. Gaynor Carr has been nodding off routinely since the age of seven. Her narcolepsy has made holding down a job impossible and made her question the idea of ever having children. Gary Beattie used to work in construction, until he fell asleep 7m up a ladder. He not only loses consciousness, his body becomes paralysed in a so-called cataleptic attack. Both of them say that showing emotion sparks the paralysing attacks and that has forced them to avoid laughing and crying. Bill Baird worked in finance but describes his stockbroking days as a race. The emotion of closing a deal would bring on a fit; he had constantly to hope he could get a client's signature before his almost inevitable collapse. His sleep is restless, with vivid nightmares when he is able to hear his surroundings while seeing terrifying hallucinations.
