Two days ago I was told by my doctor that I have oligohyramnios. He doesn't know the caused neither do I. However, recently my 4yrs old son had an unidentified viral infections. I had been nursing him and waking up at odd hours to take his temperature, thus I didn't get much sleep. I am well with no history of high blood pressure. my ARI is a below 1.5cm. I am very worried about the whole thing. I am drinking more water than usual in hope that it will help my conditions. If my conditions get better will I have a healthy baby, physically and mentally? I am about 22weeks. I read somewhere that even if my baby is born there'll be phsical defects as there wasn't enough water. Please tell me what is going to happen to my baby? Can he be safe? I had done my amnio test and every seemed to be okay. Thank you. Regards; Rita

water immersion and oligohydramnios
From: Amy anonymous@obgyn.net

I was an OB/GYN resident and am now working in the pharmaceutical industry. I am also pregnant and have been following some discussions on a particular web site. One woman, who is about 22 weeks pregnant, stated that she was diagnosed with oligohydramnios by ultrasound and was told by her midwife to spend thiry minutes a day immersed in a pool. This, she was told by her midwife, would increase her fluid level. I have never heard of this. Can this be true? It seems to me like this is like floating a water balloon in a pool and expecting it to blow up more. Can anyone tell me if this pool immersion is now standard of care Thanks.

Alternative Names oligohydramnios. Information The diabetes. An abnormallysmall amount of amniotic fluid is known as oligohydramnios.

Disease Injury Nutrition Poison ... Overview
Amniotic fluid
Definition: This fluid is a clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds the unborn baby (fetus) during pregnancy it is contained in the amniotic sac.
Alternative Names: Oligohydramnios
Information: The fetus floats in the amniotic fluid. During pregnancy the amniotic fluid increases in volume as the fetus grows. Amniotic fluid volume is greatest at approximately 34 weeks of gestation, when it averages 800 ml. Approximately 600 ml of amniotic fluid surrounds the baby at full term (40 weeks gestation ). This fluid is constantly circulated by the baby swallowing and "inhaling" existing fluid and replacing it through "exhalation" and urination. Amniotic fluid accomplishes numerous functions for the fetus, including:
  • Protects from outside injury by cushioning sudden blows or movements Allows for freedom of fetal movement and permits symmetrical musculoskeletal development Maintains a relatively constant temperature for the environment surrounding the fetus, thus protecting the fetus from heat loss Permits proper lung development
An excessive amount of amniotic fluid is called polyhydramnios . This condition may accompany multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets), congenital anomalies, or gestational diabetes.

Oligohidramnios anteparto ligado a morbilidad y mortalidad perinatal

They note that the amniotic fluid index measurement is not precise, and that individual physicians have their own thresholds for interventions.

This baby demonstrates the typical "Potter's facies" with prominent infraorbital folds resulting from oligohydramnios in utero. This is an example of a deformation sequence in which an anomaly (here the lack of normal kidneys) leads to lack of fetal urine output with resultant oligohydramnios that causes deformation through constraint.

Prophylactic versus therapeutic amnioinfusion for oligohydramnios in labour (Cochrane Review)
Hofmeyr GJ ABSTRACT A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 04 December 1995. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Amnioinfusion aims to relieve umbilical cord compression during labour by infusing a liquid into the uterine cavity. Objectives: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of prophylactic amnioinfusion for oligohydramnios compared with therapeutic amnioinfusion only if fetal heart rate decelerations or thick meconium-staining of the liquor occur. Search strategy: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register were searched. Date of last search: October 1997. Selection criteria: Randomised trials comparing prophylactic with therapeutic amnioinfusion in women with oligohydramnios but not fetal heart rate deceleration in labour. Data collection and analysis: The reviewer assessed trial quality and extracted data.

Maternal hydration for increasing amniotic fluid volume in oligohydramnios and normal amniotic fluid volume (Cochrane Review)
Hofmeyr GJ, Gülmezoglu AM ABSTRACT A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 02 February 1999. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Oligohydramnios (reduced amniotic fluid) may be responsible for malpresentation problems, umbilical cord compression, concentration of meconium in the liquor, and difficult or failed external cephalic version. Simple maternal hydration has been suggested as a way of increasing amniotic fluid volume in order to reduce some of these problems. Objectives: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of maternal hydration on amniotic fluid volume and measures of pregnancy outcome. Search strategy: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register were searched. Date of last search: 1 February 1999. Selection criteria: Randomised trials comparing maternal hydration with no hydration in pregnant women with reduced or normal amniotic fluid volume.

    What is hydramnios?
Hydramnios is a condition in which there is too much amniotic fluid around the fetus. It occurs in about 3 to 4 percent of all pregnancies. It is also called polyhydramnios. What causes hydramnios?
There are several causes of hydramnios. Generally, either too much fluid is being produced or there is a problem with the fluid being taken up, or both. Factors that are associated with hydramnios include the following:
    • Maternal factors: diabetes Fetal factors: gastrointestinal abnormalities that block the passage of fluid
abnormal swallowing due to problems with the central nervous system or chromosomal abnormalities
