Oral Cancer
Each year, more than 30,000 new cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx are diagnosed and over 8,000 deaths due to oral cancer occur. The 5-year survival rate for these cancers is only about 50 percent. Mortality from oral cancer is nearly twice as high in some minorities (especially black males) as it is in whites. Methods used to treat oral cancers (surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy) are disfiguring and costly. Preventing high risk behaviors, that include cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking, use of smokeless tobacco, and excessive use of alcohol are critical in preventing oral cancers. Early detection is key to increasing the survival rate for these cancers.

World Wide 2,70,000 people die every year from oral , pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer.
According to WHO, more than 4,13,000 cancers of the mouth and pharynx were occuring per annum in 1998. Among oral cancer patients alone, only 53 percent of those will be diagnosed this year are expected to survive for 5 years.
3000-4000 registered full blown oral cancer cases are reported daily. These statistics make oral cancer one of the deadliest diseases , yet it can be 90 percent curable when detected early. The single most important factor in saving these lives is early detection.
Figures in Pakistan are more alarming because of poor oral hygiene, un education, poverty, lack of professional facilities and public un-awareness.
In Pakistan, younger generation is more at risk because of massive usage of smoking, pan, gutka and supari. Oral cancer lesions have been detected as early as 25 years of age.

About Treatment Options for Cancers of the Oral Cavity and Oropharynx
Facts about Oral Cancers A Review by Dr. Gregg Bobier This article is offered as a public service by Cancer News on the Net This article is provided for information purposes only. It is not intended to be used for medical advice. Please read this Oral cancer represents approximately 3% of all cancers. This, however, translates to 30,000 new cases every year in the United States. The single greatest risk factor is tobacco. While cases of oral cancers are seen in patients who do not use tobacco, these constitute a very small percentage of all oral cancers. All forms of tobacco have been implicated as causative agents including cigarette, cigar, and pipe tobacco as well as chewing tobacco. In India and Sri Lanka, where chewing tobacco is used with betel nuts and reverse smoking (placing the lit end in the mouth) is practiced, there is a striking incidence of oral cancer- these cases account for as many as 50% of all cancers! Heavy alcohol usage is an additional causative factor. Lip cancer, while included in statistics for oral cancer, is more similar to skin cancers. Sun exposure is the primary cause of these, while pipe smoking is also a factor. Cancers of the mouth present in various forms. Any persistent white patch must be regarded as being suspicious. Additionally, velvety red patches- particularly those with white speckles- should be areas of concern. Finally, any non-healing ulcer (erosion) merits evaluation. More often than not, these areas are painless.
